    3. I am curious as to the origin of two names that I have in my ancestry. Back in 1800 I have a first name of Abijah for a male and Scharlotte for a female. Does anyone know which nationality would have used these names and these spellings? Mickey 74bug@nauticom.net

    1. Henry Brinker/Margaret Wise
    2. S. H. Silverman
    3. Thank all of you for your prompt response to my inquirey. Yes, my ancestor, Henry Wise was married to Barbara Rohrer, daughter of Frederick Rohrer and Catherine Diemer. To my knowledge, Henry Wise and Barbara Rohrer had the following children: John H. Wise was also a Silversmith and Clockmaker in Greensburg. John H. Wise was active in the militia circles. He served in the PA legislature, resigned and then went to Brookville, Jefferson County, PA where he went in to business with one of the members of the Greensburg Jack family. They started a brick kiln and had large stands of forestry and saw mills in Jefferson County. Both Mr. Jack and John H. Wise returned to Greensburg before their deaths. I have not found any evidence of John H. Wise's having married, but he did deed a house to a Mary Wise who's ?guardian? was a Mrs. Biggert. I believe this Mary Wise then married a Mr. Hare, or possibly Mrs. Biggert married a Mr. Hare. This Mary Wise may have been the child of a Frederick Wise who died and John H. Wise may have been the guardian. I am assuming it was his relation of some sort. I have also wondered if John H. Wise was her father and the Mrs. Biggert her grandmother????? Pure speculation as a possibl! e relationship. I believe Mrs. Biggert may have married at the same time Mary Wise married. Sorry to be so sketchy, so many notes ago! Frederick A. Wise was a newspaper man in Greensburg circa 1820. He had married in Baltimore. He then migrated to Palmyra, Missouri circa 1830 where he started another newspaper that did not succeed. He then spent the remainder of his life farming in St. Louis County, Missouri. His estate demonstrated an impressive estate of classical literature. My direct ancestor, Jacob Michael Wise was an attorney in Greensburg. He then held the seat in the PA legislature that his brother, John H. Wise had vacated. Jacob Michael Wise was married to Margaret Covode Williams, the daughter of ?Elizabeth Covode? and Nathaniel/Nathan Williams. Margaret Covode's grandfather was Garret Covode, her cousin was John Covode, a member of the US House of Representatives during the Civil War. My gr-gr-grandmother was Jane Williams Wise, daughter of Jacob Wise and Margaret Williams, she married Thomas Leonard/Larned Williams, a cooper from Rhode Island. Her sister was Cecelia Wise Donohoe, wife of Thomas Donohoe and mother of Westmoreland County's first native born Catholic priest. Jane Wise Williams' brother was William Williams Wise who was also a newspaper publisher and an attorney in Brookville, Jefferson County, PA. He died of wounds sustained in a battle in the Civil War, (or as my daughter who was raised in Virginia states, "the War! of Northern Aggression.") She had a sister who was Margaret Wilson, a brother Wilson Knott Wise who was also a printer, another sister, Amelia Wise Uncapher, another brother, Elisha Robinson Wise who was also an attorney. I have been told that Mary Wise, sister of Jacob Michael Wise married a man named Saylor. I have not to date checked this. The family oral history has our Wise ancestors as having been from Virginia. Cecelia Wise Donohoe's biography in Boucher's History of Westmoreland County has her quoted as saying Henry Wise was related to the Governor Henry Alexander Wise, the governor who signed the death warrant for John Brown of Harper's Ferry fame. My oral history did not contain that element. I have been intrigued as to why Governor Henry Alexander Wise, from the Eastern Shore of Virginia attended and graduated from Washington College (now Washington & Jefferson College), in Washington, PA. I believe he graduated circa 1820. I apologize for sketchy information. I have been assembling the pieces for many years and those pieces are in spiral notebooks. If any of you have any putty to fill the chinks in this tale, I would enjoy hearing from you. Shirley

    2. It was through a DNA project that we found out: The Linhart and Lenhart surnames in 1790 in Westmoreland Co., PA, come from two different progenerators. The Linharts came over from Germany in 1749. The Lenharts came over from Germany in 1748. According to the DNA results, their is no comparison between the two surname results. Hopefully, another Linhart descendant will volunteer to have a DNA test so we can confirm the Linhart result. DNA has helped separate the two families. (I honestly thought they shared an ancestor, but not so far). Are there any Linharts on this list willing to do this? PLease contact me to get the address of the lab that did our tests. 3. I saw a National Geographic TV program last June and had my mtdna done with them. It was quite interesting and I uploaded my results to FTDNA. I have been in their data base and never had anyone match me. But I know my grandmother was East European. Since she was adopted, maybe a cousin will match someday and I can learn more. This is only female to female line back and it would be a daughter of a sister but I don't even know if she had a sister. But still a sister of her mother would do and her girl children would have the same mtdna. It is a waiting game and you have to be lucky. Since I have a rare halogroup when a match shows up then it might be a good one for me. But then had my brother take the Y-DNA Tests from FTDNA. I was able to see with my brother's results and a 4th cousin's results that they matched 37/37. We then had what could be said our family Y-DNA. A test then was made to someone who was 6 generations back to George Purtlebaugh. Our John was also 6 generations. We proved they were from the same root family. Our paper trail did not connect with our name Bartlebaugh only one mention 50 years ago-- a story that a preacher had a town named after him . They used the spelling Purtlebaugh before but then after 1800 changed the spelling to Bartlebaugh. Bartlebaugh Tennessee was named after a traveling Preacher name George Bartlebaugh who changed his name from Purtlebaugh. So we now have a hint at what maybe our 7th or 8th generation main man. We were stuck for 50 years at our 6th generation back Hopefully as the data base gets bigger, we can find more from our root family. LEARN MORE: . Did You Know? . ..."Scientists who trace modern human origins often talk about a special kind of DNA, mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). But do you know what mitochondrial DNA is? And do you know what mitochondria do? Mitochondria are tiny structures found within the cell that resemble grains of rice. They produce the energy that cells need to function, and they have their own small complement of DNA, containing just 37 genes in humans. Compare this to the human nuclear genome (the entire set of genetic instructions found within the nuclei of all the cells), which contains some 30,000 genes. But mitochondrial DNA is especially powerful for studying the ancestry of modern humans. While the nuclear genome is reshuffled with each new generation as the father's and mother's DNA recombine, mitochondrial DNA is passed directly from a mother to her children. As a result it preserves patterns of ancient markers that thelp scientists map the path modern humans have taken around the world. ..." —Alice J. 3. I'm sending this to all because it seems to be of interest. Marriage apps were not filed in Westmoreland County until into the 1880's. Before that, we use church records when available, and items in the newspapers. There are several people who have recorded marriages from newspapers. Baltzer Meyer Historical Society has several of these. See our website.
