    1. Re: [PAWESTMO-L] WESTMORELAND COUNTY LAND BOOK
    2. Hi Shirley, I was wondering if you had any information on Williams? My GG Grandfather settled in Latrobe and had purchased a lot of property. He even bought the property for the Holy Family church in Latrobe. I am not sure of the date he settled, but was involved in the early formation of the town back around 1850. I have tried to go and look at some of his properties, with no success. Where would I be able to find information on his properties? I know that he owned a farm and a home that was at 345 Depot Street, Latrobe, PA. It was the family homestead according to a article that I have indicating it was built in 1875. Later the property became the Dutch Club and it was torn down in 1980. I had always wished that I had seen it because my GG Grandfather David Williams actually built this. His son, Vincent also lived here later in life with his wife. He was a reputable attorney in Latrobe and the Solicitor. I think there are other properties that he owned and I think he even owned property to the Latrobe Airport, because in the late 1960's, I remember my Mother getting an inheritance on the sale of property. Where could I find information to actually go see property that was owned by him at one time? Mary Ellen

    1. Re: WESTMORELAND COUNTY LAND SALES
    2. Hi Ellen: I didn't find anything in the deeds office showing John Cummings or a variation of his name. That doesn't mean it isn't there, just that I didn't find it. Maybe I didn't know what I was doing. Never thought about a Sheriff's sale, but don't really know why that would be. John moved his family of seven people directly from there to Indiana, arriving in the 1816/1817 time frame so I assume he must have sold it around then. With all the paperwork he went through to obtain the Patent, including paying back taxes, I can't imagine he just walked off without selling it. My only other thought is if some relative who was staying behind took over the land and sold it at a much later date. Thanks, Pat Cummins In a message dated 3/14/2006 1:52:08 PM Eastern Standard Time, ellen@b-n-s.com writes: Dear Pat, Are you saying that when you were at the courthouse deeds office that you looked up John Cumming's as a Grantor & did not find him selling the land, or his selling of any land in the county??? If that's the case, could it have been a Sheriff Sale? There really should have been something there if he sold it & it should have been found without any problem. 1. WESTMORELAND COUNTY LAND SALES
    2. Asking again for some helpful ideas on finding any record of the sale of my John Cummings's Westmoreland land about 1816. I have copies of the original Application, Warrant, Survey and Land Patent, dated 29 April 1816, granted my GGGGrandfather, John Cummings, when he formally purchased the 131 Westmoreland Co. acres the family had been living on for 20 years. Their land straddled today's South Huntingdon and East Huntingdon Twp., just north of Jacobs Creek. John then moved his small family to Franklin Co., Indiana, later that year. My assumption is he sold his land in 1816, or shortly thereafter, to finance the relocation. Hopefully, the documents for that sale might identify or provide some clues to other family members in the area. I made an attempt to go through the deed books during a visit to Greensburg. I couldn't find anything in the time available, but I did verify the current owners of the land. My interest is in finding who my John Cummings sold his land to, and I am willing to pay for a deed search if someone knows who I could contact. Would really appreciate some suggestions. 3. One would think that someone who was a Senator in the State Legislature, a Burgess of Greensburg, active in banking and industrial ventures, and lived 'till 1893 would have left behind a photo somewhere ..... To this point, I have not been able to find a pic of James Cunningham Clarke [1823- 1893] who lived at 218 S. Main St. in Greensburg. Am also looking for a pic of his father, James Clarke, Esq., active in state & local politics and died in 1867. Both of these Clarkes were instrumental in the building of the PRR through the Greensburg Area in the 1850's... , a subject that I am researching... I will paste something more below here about the Clarkes..... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I am looking for information on the Clarke family. Thus far I have found references in G.D. Albert’s ‘History of Westmoreland’ and in Boucher’s ‘Old and New Westmoreland’. I am also aware of a box of collected material [No. 5] in the Archives of the Westmoreland Co. Historical Soc. I am writing this post in the hope that some list members may have additional information on the Clarke family. In particular I am interested in James Clarke, Esq. [born 1783]. In his early years he lived at Hannastown. His father kept tavern and was a County Commissioner in the 1790’s. As James Clarke grew up, he traveled about and learned the trades of spinning wheelwright and chair maker. He practiced that trade in York Co. until he was 28 years old, when he married and moved to Laughlintown. While living at Laughlintown, James Clarke practiced his trade and at age 30 became Postmaster. He noted that it was at that time the Esq. was appended to his name. He soon after became a Justice of the Peace. Boucher’s history records that he was also involved in the iron-making business and connected with Washington Furnace near Laughlintown. Around 36 years of age he became County Commissioner as his father had been. When he was around 40 years of age, he was elected to the State Legislature. During several terms in the Legislature, he became an active promoter of the movement to build a canal system across the State. In 1824 the Governor appointed him to the newly-created Canal Commission. In that capacity he participated in surveys for canals of the PA Public Works and was involved in acquiring property rights of way. He continued his activities as a Legislator. By 1830 his involvement in canal building prompted him to move his family to Blairsville, along the canal route. There he could be in more direct contact with others responsible for directing work on the Western Division of the PA Public Works. His extensive work on the PA canal system gave him an excellent background for work on the building of the Pennsylvania Railroad in the late 1840’s and early 1850’s. The PRR offered him the position of Commissioner of Damages for the Western Division in 1847, and he accepted. In that position he was responsible for acquiring land rights for the new railroad and satisfying damage claims. He was instrumental in building the PRR from Johnstown to Pittsburgh. Despite the fact that he had no schooling past age twelve, he was an avid reader and wrote on subjects as diverse as morality and physics. A son of James Clarke, James C. Clarke [1823 – 1893] became a prominent Greensburg attorney. He too worked for the PRR as Ass’t. Commissioner of Damages, and was local counsel for the railroad. He served on the State Canal Commission and was a Senator in the PA Legislature for several terms. Later, he was in the banking business in Greensburg and served as a school director. A son of James C. Clarke, James K. Clarke, was a prominent local politician and lived in Greensburg until the day he died, on Christmas Day of 1945. Any additional sources of information on the Clarkes would be appreciated, ESPECIALLY photos. My actual focus in doing this study is the building of the PRR through the Greensburg Area. Since James Clarke, Esq. and his son, James C. Clarke were both in the employ of the PRR during its building, they are of primary interest. ********************** jim miller/621 grove st ********************** greensburg pa 15601

    3. This article was in the CENTRE DAILY TIMES (State College, PA) paper this morning: STATES STEADILY CLOSING DOWN ACCESS TO PUBLIC INFORMATION by Robert Tanner (AP) Some things your government doesn't have to tell you about: *The safety plan at your child's school, if you live in Iowa, *Medication errors at your grandparent's nursing home in North Carolina, *Disciplinary actions against Indiana state employees. States have steadily limited the public's access to government information since the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, a new Associated Press analysis of laws in all 50 states has found. Legislatures have passed more than 1,000 laws changing access to information... Federal agencies responded by shutting down Web sites, pulling telephone directories and rethinking everything from dam blueprints to historical records. In statehouse battles, the issue has pitted advocates of government openness - including journalists and civil liberties groups - against lawmakers and others who worry that public information could be misused...security concerns typically won out. States passed 616 laws that restricted access.... Just this month, Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty announced a new governmentwide effort to target identity theft, barring access to driver's licenses, phone records and Social Security numbers. No longer, the governor said, should there be a presumption that government information is public. Open government advocates disagree. The way we see it, if Pawlenty is successful, information that used to be public in Minnesota will soon be unnecessarily locked away. I can't help but wonder what 5 pounds sterling was worth. For instance, I wonder how many pounds one would have to pay for a good horse or some other object of some value that most owned in that day. Has anyone got any idea? It would be nice to know (or at least have a feel for) whether they were getting the land dirt cheap at 5 pounds for 100 acres or was 5 pounds something usually only available to the relatively well-to do person of the time? In other words.. since it wasn't actually really "free" land, could it have been considered very "cheap" land?
