    1. Puckety Church Cemetery-Lower Burrell

    3. This article was on the front page of the Valley News today. http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/valleynewsdispatch/s_462054.html **They are looking for the family of Sarah Ann Kennedy, buried in 1841, in Pucketty Church Cemetery.** PennDOT may have paved part of a cemetery By Tamara Simpson VALLEY NEWS DISPATCH Saturday, July 15, 2006 PennDOT crews recently may have paved over a portion of a 165-year-old grave in a Lower Burrell cemetery. State road crews used fill to stabilize the shoulder of Puckety Church Road in June, and reportedly partially covered a grave with an asphalt base. Crews were preparing the road to be paved late this fall or early next spring, according to PennDOT officials. Dave Enick, PennDOT senior highway maintenance manager for Westmoreland County, said workers stabilized the shoulder of the road along Puckety Church Cemetery and in doing so may have covered a portion of a grave in the cemetery. "Nobody can tell us exactly where the body is," Enick said. The grave of Sarah Ann Kennedy, a 26-year-old woman buried in 1841, lies diagonal to Puckety Church Road. Nearly 100 years after she was buried there, PennDOT acquired a 16.5-foot right of way from the center of the road. Crews extended the road last month to the state's right of way limit, a line outlined by a small, white fence installed by church officials who own and maintain the cemetery. The fence crosses over Kennedy's grave. Enick said there are no historical records that determine how deep Kennedy was buried, the length of her grave, or whether the headstone was placed next to her head, directly above her chin, or above her body. As a result, he said there's no way to say how much of her grave was paved over. Last month, Puckety Church member Howard Newell said, he was visiting family members at the cemetery shortly after crews started working in the area. Although no workers were present when he was there, he noticed someone had been digging near Kennedy's grave. He called PennDOT's 1-800-FIX-ROAD number to alert crews to stop digging there. "I told them another foot-and-a-half (deeper), and they'd be digging into the casket," Newell said. "(A PennDOT official) said they would dig no deeper." But crews have already dug at least 16 inches below the surface of the cemetery on that part of the road, which makes the question of how deep Kennedy was originally buried an important one. Church officials and members don't understand how crews could have paved over part of the grave in the first place. Kennedy's 3-foot-8-inch tall headstone is only 18 inches from the road. Church officials maintain the stone stands high enough and is close enough to the road that it would be nearly impossible to work a few feet from it without noticing its presence. Matt Wehrle, chairman of upkeep for the church and cemetery, can't believe PennDOT officials did not contact the church before digging into the ground that close to a grave. "The thing I don't understand is why they wouldn't have contacted someone to say, 'We're redoing the road. We're going to be cutting to widen the road. Can you give us a drawing of where the graves are?'" Wehrle said. Enick agreed that the church should have been contacted prior to crews working that close to the grave. "In 20/20 hindsight, yes," he said. "We were focused on staying on our right of way and getting the job done." Wehrle admits the church cannot say exactly where Kennedy was buried because records in 1841 didn't include those details. Enick said PennDOT is "very sensitive" to situations like this. He said crews often work near old cemeteries, and exhuming Kennedy's grave and moving it is an option for the church officials to consider. "We would be willing to work with the parish in any way," he said. Wehrle said that church officials met with a PennDOT official on Thursday to discuss the situation. The church's priority, Wehrle said, is finding relatives of Kennedy and determining what their wishes are. "We want to ask them what they want to do," Wehrle said. So far, the church hasn't been able to locate any relatives. Wehrle said that if the family can be contacted, and they want the roadway shifted, church officials will ask PennDOT to move the road. If the family wants the casket exhumed, church officials will ask PennDOT to have the casket exhumed. According to Wehrle, PennDOT officials said that lawyers for both sides might have to get involved. A PennDOT spokesperson couldn't be reached by phone for comment late Friday to discuss the meeting. Wehrle, meantime, said that if the church can't find any of Kennedy's relatives, or if the family doesn't want anything done about the situation, church leaders might push PennDOT to do something. Wehrle didn't elaborate on what the church might ask for. "We'd pretty much like to ask PennDOT to do something about this," he said. 1. County deaths, 1854
    2. Westmoreland Co., PA deaths in 1854 "During the years 1852 to 1854, the Register of Wills for each county was required by law to keep records and indexes of births, deaths and marriages. Copies from 49 of the 64 counties existing at that time are maintained at the Archives; however, returns are not inclusive for these years. There are no returns for Blair, Clarion, Clinton, Crawford, Erie, Fayette, Forest, Fulton, Jefferson, Lebanon, Philadelphia, Pike, Potter, Sullivan, or Wyoming County." Archivist, PA State Archives. With thanks to Kathryn Doyle Piedmont, CA, who personally spoke to the archivist. Additional information from Kathryn Doyle in follow-up message. You can't copyright facts. No worries. I spoke to the archivist. The county registrar made two sets of records - one to keep, one to send to the state. Those original state returns from the 1850s are at the State archives and have been microfilmed. I don't know where the originals are from the counties. Indiana Co. has a typescript in ledger form for use at the courthouse. I haven't checked with Westmoreland Co. I need to spend more time with the catalog at familysearch.org (LDS site) to see if perhaps the microfilm of the state copy returns is available. The films that come up when you search by county for Westmoreland are transcripts. The archivist seemed to think that perhaps they are available in Salt Lake but are cataloged at the State level or under Dept. of State. A copy is in the Westmoreland Co. court house. Typed copy in 4 columns. First column is NAME. Second is (#) of something, perhaps page. Third is RESIDENCE. Fourth is PLACE OF BURIAL. It should be understood this is a transcription of a transcription of records that were extracted by county clerks and sent to the state archives and put on film. Errors may be expected, but obvious errors, such as spelling “Lutheran” as “ Lutheral” [sic], “Metting” for “Meeting” I corrected. Names and numbers are exactly as found. Akerman, Susannah (72) Mt. 1. PORTER Family (Rostraver Township; Westmoreland Co., PA)
    2. Posted by: Cathy PORTER-Maynard (In Minnesota) <>< . ____________________________________________________________ . THE BIOGRAPHICAL RECORD OF HENRY COUNTY, ILLINOIS (Illustrated) The S. J. Clarke Publishing Company. 1901. .____________________________________________________________ . . BIOGRAPHY: WILLIAM PORTER. [Page 694] . Among the honored pioneers and highly esteemed citizens of Henry county [Illinois] is numbered William Porter, who located here in the spring of 1843 and has since been prominently identified with its growth and development. He is now the owner of a fine farm of two hundred and seventy-three acres on sections 3 and 4; Cornwall township, which is under a high state of cultivation and well improved. . Mr. [William] Porter was born in South Huntington township, Westmoreland county, Pennsylvania, on the 15th of September, 1815, and is a son of Daniel and Catherine (Gaffney) Porter, the former a native of Virginia, the latter of Mt. Pleasant township, Westmoreland county, Pennsylvania. In 1834 the father [Daniel Porter] brought his family to Illinois, and after traveling all over the state took up his residence in Decatur on the 6th of October, that year. On account of the frequency of prairie fires he avoided the newer settlements. He spent the 4th of July in Danville, and remained for about four weeks in Bloomington on this trip. He bought a farm of two hundred and forty acres adjoining Decatur, which was already fenced and under cultivation. . William Porter is the fifth in order of birth in a family of eleven children, the others being John [Porter], who was drowned in the Youghiogheny River in Pennsylvania; twins, who died in infancy; Edward Porter [b. 1813, Rostraver Township, Westmoreland Co., PA], who died in Reno, [Cass County] Iowa, at the age of seventy-seven years, leaving a large family living near that place; Isaiah [Porter], who went to California in 1849, and lived on the Pacific coast until his death, which occurred at Tacoma, Washington; Harriet [Porter], who married William White and died in Stark county, Illinois; Lucinda [Porter], wife of Daniel Gingrich of the same county; Catherine, who married Samuel Airhart, and also died in Stark county. Both were graduates of Knox College, of Galesburg. Aaron [Porter], a resident of California; and Elizabeth [Porter], who died at the age of three years. . The subject of this sketch [Mr. William Porter] came with his parents to Illinois and remained on the farm near Decatur until June, 1837, when he went to Stark county. There he entered one hundred and sixty acres of unbroken land, to the improvement and cultivation of which he devoted his energies until coming to Henry county in the spring of 1843. He purchased eighty acres of land in Cornwall township, and traded his Stark county farm for a partially improved tract of two hundred acres. It is now under a high state of cultivation with good and substantial buildings, all of which have been erected by Mr. Porter. The neat and thrifty appearance of the place plainly indicates careful supervision. . In Stark county [Illinois], on the 5th of May, 1840, Mr. Porter married Miss Eleanor Hamilton, who was born on the 16th of February, 1818, in South Huntington township, Westmoreland county, Pennsylvania, and died in Cornwall township, this county, May 20, 1885. She was one of a family of six children whose parents were Alexander and Elizabeth (Steele) Hamilton. The children born to our subject and his wife were as follows: Mary Martha, now the wife of John T. Rondema, farmer of the state of Washington; Alexander Hamilton, who died in infancy; Jane Ellen, who died at the age of four years; William C., deceased, who married Amanda Turpin and followed merchandising at Hartwell, Nebraska; Charles, who died in infancy; Ella and Daniel, twins, the former of whom first married Horace G. Benedict and, second, Charles S. Terpening, a farmer and school teacher, and the latter married, Sarah Lloyd and follows farming; Epaphroditus J., who married Miss Mary Jewett Sears and is a physician at Grand Island, Nebraska, having graduated from Rush Medical College, Chicago, in 1878; Josie, wife of Allison Orville Taylor, a merchant of Minatare, Nebraska; Viola, wife of James Dysart, a stock raiser of Eagle, Nebraska, and Bowen, who married America Ernst, and died at Gold Hill, Oregon, of which place he was a physician, being a graduate of the Chicago Homeopathic Medical College; he was also a student in the Rush Medical College. . Mr. Porter has always taken an active and commendable interest in public affairs, especially educational matters, and has efficiently served as school director. Politically he is identified at present with the Peoples party, and has always been a warm supporter of the principles advocated by Abraham Lincoln, and fraternally is connected with the Grange. In religious belief, he is a Baptist, and is an earnest and consistent member of that church. Through the fifty-eight years of his residence here Mr. Porter has become widely known, and his many excellent traits of character have gained him the high regard of a host of friends. . In 1849, in company with two others from Bureau county, Illinois, our subject started for the gold fields of California, making the trip with ox teams in about four months' time. On the Little Blue River they joined a wagon train, so that when they finally crossed the great plains there were sixty-five men and one woman and baby, the wife of our subject's brother Isaiah. He remained in California two years, prospecting and mining. His trip did not prove a financial success. The return trip was made by water, via New Orleans, and the Mississippi River to Peoria, then by stage to Henry county. . In 1861 he again went to California, via New York City by boat to Aspinwall, by rail, ocean, and the Isthmus to Panama and then by boat to San Francisco. He engaged in mining in Nevada and remained four years, returning in 1865 by water to New York, thence by rail to Henry county. He crossed the isthmus over the now proposed canal route by stage and river steamers. In 1883 he went to the state of Washington, via the Northern Pacific, being a passenger on the first train to cross the mountains from St. Paul. Terpening, a farmer and school teacher, and the latter married, Sarah Lloyd and follows farming; Epaphroditus J., who married Miss Mary Jewett Sears and is a physician at Grand Island, Nebraska, having graduated from Rush Medical College, Chicago, in 1878; Josie, wife of Allison Orville Taylor, a merchant of Minatare, Nebraska; Viola, wife of James Dysart, a stock raiser of Eagle, Nebraska, and Bowen, who married America Ernst, , and died at Gold Hill, Oregon, of which place he was a physician, being a graduate of the Chicago Homeopathic Medical College; he was also a student in the Rush Medical College. . Mr. Porter has always taken an active and commendable interest in public affairs, especially educational matters, and has efficiently served as school director. Politically he is identified at present with the Peoples party, and has always been a warm supporter of the principles advocated by Abraham Linco ln, and fraternally is connected with the Grange. Paul. . . 1. county deaths, 1853
    2. Westmoreland Co., PA deaths in 1853 "During the years 1852 to 1854, the Register of Wills for each county was required by law to keep records and indexes of births, deaths and marriages. With thanks to Kathryn Doyle of Piedmont, CA, who personally spoke to the archivist. The archivist seemed to think that perhaps they are available in Salt Lake but are cataloged at the State level or under Dept. of State. Typed copy in 4 columns. First column is NAME. Second is (#) of something, perhaps page. Third is RESIDENCE. Fourth is PLACE OF BURIAL. It should be understood this is a transcription of a transcription of records that were transcribed by county clerks and sent to the state archives and are on microfilm. Errors may be expected, but obvious errors, such as spelling “Lutheran” as “Lutheral” [sic], “Metting” for “Meeting” I corrected. Names and numbers are exactly as found. 2. Russ, There was a Pleasant Valley school. It was located going East from Jeannette on Rte. 130. Go to Greengate Rd., turn left, cross over old 130, go up steep hill and it was the first house on the left. It used to be the one room school house. Don't know if this helps or not.
