Hi, Does anyone know of any historical or interesting local river boat trips in either Westmoreland or Indiana County that are similar to the Gateway Clipper in Pittsburgh? Am looking to locate a historical boat ride in either Westmoreland, Cambria or Indiana County. If you know of one or a company that has one that is cost-effective, can you please e-mail me. Just a question that may have a bearing on your inquiry... Do any of those counties you mention have a river DEEP enough for navigating pleasure/sightseeing boats? This site has a list of tombstone symbols and their meanings plus a lot of other data too. http://familyhistory101.com/encyclopedia.html Thanks Ellis for the photos of the unusual tombstone. I have never seen one like it. Dawne
The skull and crossbones were meant to symbolize "momenti mori", or "remember death". In an earlier age of our history, when life was much more precarious that it is today, one's mortality, and the need to be prepared to "meet thy maker" was often forefront on our ancestor's minds. As an example, a poem often inscribed on stones from the 19th century read: Remember man as you walk by As you are now, so once was I As I am now, so you shall be So be prepared to follow me Ellis Michaels Co-coordinator Pennsylvania USGenWeb Tombstone Project [email protected] > [Original Message] > From: <[email protected]> > To: <[email protected]> > Date: 6/10/2008 9:35:26 AM > Subject: Re: [PAWESTMO] tombstone carver James Gemmell > > > In a message dated 6/9/2008 8:27:37 P.M. Why don't you just call the courthouse for what you need? Patty Duff is terrific in the marriage dept and she surely could direct you to the dept that you need. Marriage lic and recorder of deeds are all ready on line as is civil court. They also have delayed deaths and births in Pattys dept. She is so nice and terrific at helping out. There are some estates listed also. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]]On Behalf Of Allen D. Listers, Bill Plack has brought a most unusual tombstone to my attention, and I was able to go examine it more thoroughly yesterday while visiting my father in Jeannette. The tombstone is poured concrete, and includes what appears to be a death mask taken of the deceased. The stone is in the Sacred Heart (Old) Cemetery on Ridge Road in Jeannette. Here are four views of the stone. http://www.usgwarchives.org/pa/westmoreland/tsimages/sacredheart-hempfield/jeannette/santillo-vittor-a1.jpg http://www.usgwarchives.org/pa/westmoreland/tsimages/sacredheart-hempfield/jeannette/santillo-vittor-a2.jpg http://www.usgwarchives.org/pa/westmoreland/tsimages/sacredheart-hempfield/jeannette/santillo-vittor-a3.jpg http://www.usgwarchives.org/pa/westmoreland/tsimages/sacredheart-hempfield/jeannette/santillo-vittor-a4.jpg Ellis Michaels Co-coordinator Pennsylvania USGenWeb Tombstone Project [email protected] "If you would not be forgotten, as soon as you are dead and rotten, either write things worth reading, or do things worth the writing" (Benjamin Franklin, Poor Richard's Almanac)
John, Do you happen to have any pictures of the stones? I would be interested in seeing them. Bill PLack and I did a series of Tombstone Carver Pages, that were featured in the Westmoreland County Historical Society Magazine last year. Hi Barb, Do you mean the whole list? The whole list is available at the State Archives here http://www.phmc.state.pa.us/bah/dam/rg/di/r14-25RecordMarriages/r14-25MainInterface.htm or you can look at just the Fayette ones at the Fayette Yahoo site as we transcribe them. As far as marriage applications go they are not on line. I think we all want to know. I don't even care about the title "professional". I'd be willing to pay for the information I want whether or not the researcher has a title. If you are near a Family History Center in a LDS temple, you may rent film that will give you some help. Go to the site _www.familysearch.org_ (http://www.familysearch.org) , then <library>, then <library search>, then <place>, then type in only <Westmoreland>. A menu will appear with all the Westmorelands availaable. Chose <Pennsylvania Westmoreland>. You will see a long list of records available, unfortunately many of them in book form that you can't get. But go to <probate> and select one or more of those categories. You will see the WPA compilation of court records by alphabet. Yes, in alphabetical order. I have already rented the B and the M and the S film. The B film carried over into the first of the C's and I found Eli Campbell's will information. The M film was split into 2, I believe, and I rented both. I think the S film was only one. After you get the information, you can write to the courthouse with the exact numbers you need to get a copy. I did that in the beginning of my research some 10 years ago and I made note of everything in those surnames that concerned my families for the day when I hit the lottery and could order all the legal papers. I know there are other film but I haven't found them in the LDS catalog. I saw them when I went to Harrisburg some years ago and again, copied what I could of those pre-1900 film, marriages, deaths, etc. I have some of the marriages in my earlier families from those 3 film. Great-grandpap Sholey's marriage, Uncle Coon's death from gangrene, Uncle Sam's death from old age, John Brown's estate, Uncle Bill's minor children's guardianship. You may have luck finding a professional researcher in Harrisburg who would check the film at the State Archives for a fee, but you can also do some of the research yourself at an FHC. It's a 45 minute ride to and then back from my local FHC in Hampton, VA. One trip to order, who knows how many to read.
