Susan, This whole thing makes a little more sense now...at least to me! :D What I have found is an 1880 census image (16 Jun 1880 - Stanton, Westmoreland Co., PA - Roll T9_1204, Page 47.1000, Enumeration 111, Lines 11-13) listing a DERVIN F. FOX (transcribed on ancestry.com as DEWIN F. FOX), LEAH E. FOX, and MARY S. FOX. What I have found about Dervin is that there is an 1870 census image (16 JUN 1870 - Hempfield Twp., Westmoreland Co., PA - Roll M593_1465, Page 261, Lines 6-9) listing Dervin F. Fox, a father John (age 63), a mother Mary A. (age 54), and a brother John M. (age 12). I am apt to believe that that is the same Dervin F. Fox. As far as Jennie's children and husband, here is what I have: Jennie Miller married C.E. (Charles Edward) Brinker on April 26, 1906 (Westmoreland Co. marriage license 21836, dated April 26, 1906). Charles and Jennie had two daughters, as far as I can tell so far: Althea Fern Brinker, born ~1907, and Agnes G. Brinker, born ~1909. These are from census images for 1910, 1920, and 1930. Charles died on April 13, 1943. I know this because I found his draft card from World War II, with a line drawn through it and a died date recorded on it. :D Hope this helps! Richard M. Simpson, III Researching a lot of the same lines! With the addition of BALLEW, KUHNS, BAKER, BURNS, COHEN and others!
Hey Richard, Re: Leah Elizabeth Steiner I have first husband was Darwin FIX and there were 3 daughters: Mamie, Agnes and Jennie. But no dates. This was from Janet K. Warter awhile back. Then she married 2nd husband George W. Miller - and from one of your sites was listed 2 daughters Agnes Adele and Jennie. Mamie could easily be the Mary S. from the 1900 census, and since children from previous marriage were often not designated as such on census records, all 3 daughters could actually be from Leah's first marriage. And in light of the 1900 census stating Leah was the mother of 3 children, 3 living ... I haven't seen this census myself, so can you tell if the 1st husband's name better fits Dewin FOX or Darwin FIX? Also, would you let me know Jennie Miller's husband and their children's names? If someone could look up the obit for DERWIN Fox, b/ 1852/53 it may help. His parents may have been John and Mary A Fox. I think he had a brother Peter who named his son Derwin F Fox b/1871. I would also check for Darwin. Hope this helps. Anything listed in any of the cemeteies for Derwin ? Attention Jim Miller: I messed up your e-mail address, please contact me once again. Thanks, Shirley
Greetings, listers... I am working on the far end of some of my STEINER lines, when I discovered a quandary. I have a list from someone that states that Leah Elizabeth STEINER (1857 - 190?) married a George W. MILLER (1858 - ?) and had two daughters, Agnes Adele MILLER and Jennie MILLER. I found a 1900 census entry confirming this, sort of. Miller, Dr. G. W. - Head - Nov 1858 - 42 - M - 6 Miller, Leah E. - Wife - Feb 1858 - 43 - M - 6 - 3 - 3 Miller, Mary S. - Daughter - Nov 1877 - 22 - S - 0 - 0 - 0 Miller, Agnes A. - Daughter - Dec 1880 - 19 - S - 0 - 0 - 0 Miller, Jennie - Daughter - Sep 1882 - 17 - S - 0 - 0 - 0 So I found this family, which looks suspiciously like the one that I need, right? Everything matches until you get to the number of years of present marriage. In this case, it is listed as 6. But the girls are 22, 19, and 17. I looked for a 1880 census for Leah E. STEINER MILLER, but I found the following: FOX, Dewin - W - M - 27 FOX, Leah E. - W - F - 22 FOX, Mary S. - W - F - 2 My question is this. Has anyone more information about this particular FOX family? The neighbors of this FOX family are ROSENSTEEL, BAKER, STEINER, and ERRETT, all of which are related to Leah Elizabeth STEINER in some way or another. Dewin Fox is listed with a spinal disability, if that helps. The lady that I got the STEINER list from responded that the MILLERs were married not in 1894, like the census reports, but in 1881. And Leah Elizabeth STEINER died before the 1910 census was completed, because George W. MILLER was listed as a widow on that census, living with Agnes A. MILLER and her sister Jennie, along with Jennie's husband and two children. I would love to close this line definitively. Any help would be appreciated. Richard

Hi Richard, Thanks for responding. I will also keep your info and if I learn anything will let you know. You have a very interesting middle name. Is you line connected to the Civil War Union general? One of my Chaney uncles has that middle name and he was born a few years before the Civil War. Since one of James Simpson's son ahd the middle name of Clelland I thought ya'll may be connected. Hi Rick, The original land in Pennsylvania was gotten by land grants. People who wanted to settle went through a process including a survey and finally a land grant. They could then settle on a piece of property. So these are names of the first to own the land. They may or may not have actually settled in Rostraver Twp. but this gives an idea of who the first settlers probably were. The names are taken from a map of the land. For a bit more on the process see: http://www.directlinesoftware.com/landacq.htm Hope that helps. My thanks to Dawne, Shirley and Ellis for your nice emails. If any of you have ancestors in Fayette County we have a neat Yahoo list where Dawne and others help people find their ancestors daily (or so it seems). You can see the messages without joining. A little update on the Westmoreland site. We have added the list of Rostraver Grant names kindly contributed by Raymond Popp. And we have started a Photo Gallery for ancestors. If you would like to add a photo just email it to me. I only ask that they be from about WWI or earlier. Nothing quite like finding an ancestor's photo. I got a great photo of an ancestor of mine (born in 1820) through meeting someone online who had it - so you never know what might be out there. I hope we can turn up a few. Thanks again. Dawne, After all of the responses I have typed, you would think that I would have remembered to tell you this much. I have little basis in knowing that Thomas Ballew was born in Somerset County. There was one record somewhere that I saw on ancestry.com of one of his sons that asked where his father was born. That record (a scan of a written record of some sort) stated that his father was born in Somerset County, PA. Since the only census images I can find have him living in Westmoreland County, you can see the root of my confusion about it. Richard
