    2. Hi I wondering if anyone could help me. I am trying to obtain a death certificate of my GGrandmother. She died in Wayne Co. in 1904. I called the court house in Honesdale. They said I would have to call Lackawanna Co. court house in Scranton. Is this so?? Thanks !!! Rita Bloomer Marchese

    3. Totally untrue. The records were kept locally through 1905 and after that were sent to the Vital Records Office in New Castle. IF (and that's a big if) the death was recorded, you can get a copy from the microfilm reel at the Wayne County Historical Society for a modest lookup fee plus the cost of the copy, which would be $1. I believe that the courthouse has a copy, too, but current personnel don't always know where the older records are. Be forewarned, though, that these death records are not as complete as the later death certificates. Although there is a column for it, generally parents' names are omitted except in the case of a child, and even then the mother's maiden name is seldom given. It will give you the date, age, place and cause of death, duration of illness, and place of burial. It may also include place of birth, although that was often left out. You can reach Gloria McCullough, the WCHS Research Librarian at wchspa@ptd.net.
