    1. Proposed Website
    2. Hi List, For quite a few years I have been building a database of obituaries that I have collected from several newspapers, such as the Wayne Independent and the Scranton Times.  I have been toying with the idea of setting up a webpage with an index of the names and links to the typed obituaries. I have several questions in connection with actually initiating this. 1.  Does anyone know if obituaries are covered by copyright law? 2.  Do you think such a database online would be useful? 3.  How would I get started doing this? 4.  Where would be the most useful place to locate the website? Thanks in advance for any and all input. Debbie

    3. Re: Does anyone know if obituaries are covered by copyright law? The papers are under copyright, and many see this as including the obits. To protect yourself, it may be wise to obtain permission from each paper whose obits you plan to use. Different papers have different requirements as do the web providers on whose space the obits would be posted. There is a copyright discussion list at RootsWeb which might help you sort it out.
