    3. The Ancestry.com index says "H. M. J." and I would have to agree, based on how the enumerator made those letters in other names. I'm not researching Gaylords, but I do note that Anson is not included in the list of Giles Gaylord's children in Mathews, and in fact isn't mentioned in Mathews at all. I couldn't find them in Wayne County in 1860, so widened the search and found an Amasa Gaylord in Illinois who I am convinced is the man called Anson in 1850. Comparison: 1850 1860 Anson, 55, b. CT. Amasa, 66, b. CT Mary, 50, b. MA Mary, 60, b. MA Mary M., 27, b. PA Mary M.*, 36, b. PA D. H., 12, b. PA David H., 22, b. PA H. M., 8, b. PA Henry M., 18, b. PA L. E., 4, b. PA Lucien E., 15, b. PA *In 1860, she is "Mary M. Arnold, widow and daughter." Then I went back to 1840 and found "Amasa Gaylord, Jr." in Clinton Twp., aged 40-50. Conclusion: "Anson" Gaylord is really Amasa Gaylord, who left Wayne County between 1850 and 1860. If this is common knowledge among Gaylord researchers, forgive me. Incidentally, Carol, I also found in 1840 a "Carmi" Gaylord, 70-80, living with two younger males. A grandfather?
