Since there's a pause, I'd like to pass along some general info -- The GOOD A fellow researcher, Gary Minder, has created spreadsheets customized for each census year that he wishes to share with all. This was on some of the census lists, and the feedback has been very positive. Entire explanation, etc. can be found at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~minder/ ========= The BAD One of our mailboxes was graced again this morning with a "Hi Fellow Genealogist" letter, and a "not to the general public" offer of 30% off a lifetime subscription to their "award-winning service" just for helping them by answering a survey. Old hands at online genealogy will immediately see warning signs, but it is a tempting offer -- all info in one place -- and especially tempting to many newer researchers feeling overwhelmed. PLEASE READ THE TERMS OF SERVICE!! (Conveniently at the very bottom left corner of the "home" page.) They will tell you that: There are NO refunds. All (ALL) records are on EXTERNAL sites (They link to sites of people like you and me, people who offer info to you free). They do not own, nor are they responsible for inaccuracies or ramifications of, any information accessed through their site. You will have unlimited access to the site for as long as the site is up and running, and open for business. It could close tomorrow (like was already done in past). The terms of service may be changed at any time without notice. ========= and the UGLY While fuming over the above site this morning, I inadvertantly gained access to the "Members Only Area" with a silly madeup log-in. It is impossible to describe how terrible (and ugly) the site is. All of the info belongs to others, and is readily available elsewhere. The majority of the categories, hundreds and hundreds, contain no data whatsoever. And I can't believe this is legal. (Yes, I am naive.) ========= Hope the census spreadsheets are useful to those interested, and that you'll all forgive my "soapboxing" above. Several listers (from other lists) got "taken" by this offer this past summer, so I mean well.
