The above data has been added to the website http://www.dsdata.com.au/genealogy/nepa/census1850.html Enjoy. This will probably be the last update until the site is moved. The URL will NOT be changing. Thanks Fred Myers

Hi all I appreciate the support that has been recently expressed with respect to http://www.dsdata.com.au/genealogy/nepa/ I like to think that I have offerred a resource to NEPA researchers that no other area has yet been able to provide or duplicate. It has been offerred freely and thanks is more than enough. The troubles I have been having are more technical (and political) than monetary. The move will cost me time and frustration but in the end the additional expense will be about $15-20 US a month. **************************************************************** I would much rather people be willing to share their research (while keeping their rights to it) than share their money. **************************************************************** So I apologize for the plug, but I would love to be given 1. Family lineage data for people found on the census data pages. The idea of HTML is that it allows for connectivity. My vision is to follow families through history in the lineage or through the census data records. Or both. 2. Reunion photos prior to the 1940s for NEPA families. 3. Comments and corrections on the data which is posted on the site I have just received permission to use a large amount of SWINGLE data (thanks Karen) but I will eventually need some assistance in understanding the linkages where my existing data is ... well... different. The other families in this category that come to mind are COBB and ROUGHT. Thanks for listening. Fred Myers
My Irish Catholic ancestors and families worked on the D. & H. Canal, the glass factory, mills, hotels, and the railroad. Some years ago, I wrote to St. John's Church asking for family info.and they gave my request to a parishoner who had taken on the job of doing the research in the church's records. At that time, it cost $10 for the first hour and $ 8 for every additional hour spent looking for the information I requested. There are no burial records for that time as the book disappeared. There are marriage and baptismal records though, and the earliest one she found for me was 1842. It gave the child's name, date of birth, date of baptism, parents' names including mother's maiden name, and the sponsors' names. It was worth the money, however, they wouldn't send photocopies, just a transcription. You could get a certified copy signed by the parish priest for a small fee. Hello all Thank you for your patience The census data (1850/1870/1910 for Wayne & Susquehanna Counties) and associated family lineage data is back on line http://www.dsdata.com.au/genealogy/nepa Having said that I will have to move the site some time in the next couple of weeks or drastically reduce the size. The transfer from the old host to the new host (over which I had no control) caused the size to grow from 20 mB to 76 mB. This graduated the site into a category for which the provider in Australia wants too much each month. I am negotiating movement to another Australian provider and failing that effort will probably move it to the USA Thanks again Fred Myers [email protected]
Hi - when I was growing up in Honesdale and environs, there was a Catholic School and Church almost at the end of Church St, near the old Loomis Plant and later Moore Forms. Has it and it's records disappeared? Clay Yale Nancy Lyons wrote: > > I am researching an Irish Catholic family who were in Honesdale from > about 1862 until 1878. Nancy: St. Juliana's Parish is in Rock Lake, north of Honesdale and in the middle of a large Irish Catholic population in the 1800s. It is a surprisingly old parish and I understand that St. John Neuman visited it in the mid 1800s. It has been combined with the Parish in Pleasant Mount (St. Cecilia?) which is a tad south of Rock Lake. Lee Woodmansee
I am researching an Irish Catholic family who were in Honesdale from about 1862 until 1878. They had a couple of children in New York City from about 1856 until they came to Honesdale. What was the industry in that time frame in Honesdale? They were from County Donegal in Ireland. I need to write for church records from St. John's Catholic Church, how are they to deal with? Was that the only catholic church in the area at the time? Regards, Nancy

HI list, I"m researching the Blockberger/Blochbergers in Wayne Co. Is anyone else? I came across an Ida Blockberger who married William Holgate back in 1887, no other dates were given. William is buried in Indian Orchard Cemetery, are there any records available for this cemetery? Wm.Holgate was from Damascus, is anyone researching Holgate, and ran across the Blockbergers? I"d like to know who Ida's parents were. My line is Christain Blockberger,Prussia, m.Mina Glason/Minnie Glacier, found two spellings, which is always nice, not!! Christain and Minnie are buried in St.John's Lutheran Cemetery north of Honesdale. My goal is to find out where in Prussia, or Germany they were from. Thanks for any help, wish I could be home to do more searching this summer. Too many live family members still there to let me do much work, though......:>) Take Care, Debi

Iris, To add to what Elaine says and make one tiny correction...a borough is independent of the township it may be geographically located in. For example, the Borough of Honesdale is almost completely surrounded by Texas Township, and while they may cooperate in some areas (road maintenance, etc.), each has its own governing body. In the case of the borough, there are a Mayor and a Borough Council; in the Township, it's a Board of Supervisors. There are also cities in Pennsylvania, of course, but a minimum population of 10,000 is required, and Wayne County doesn't have any qualifying areas. As Elaine points out, it is important and very helpful in doing genealogical research to know the history and geography of the area your ancestors came from. In your case, as I recall, most of your Lillies started out in Damascus Township, within which you'd find the towns (not Townships) of Damascus, Galilee, Abrahamsville, etc. To the best of my knowledge they are simply areas within the Township, governed by the Supervisors with no officials of their own. Starrucca is a borough on the border with Susquehanna County. It became a Borough when it was a thriving industrial town, but today its population has dropped to around 200. At one time, believe it or not, it was spelled "Starucca," but for many years "Starrucca" has been the preferred spelling. It's pronounced StarUCKa. If you have an idea that your ancestors lived in Scott or Preston Townships or even Susquehanna County, be sure to check the Starrucca census - and vice versa. But remember - up through the 1870 census Starrucca was called Wayne Borough. Another tip on Wayne County (and lots of other areas) research. Your ancestors could live in a different political entity in every census and never move at all. Borough, township and even county boundaries were constantly changing during the 19th century. While the 1872 Beers Atlas is an excellent tool, it predates several changes. On the 1870 census, for example, residents of Hawley are counted in Palmyra Township, since it did not become a borough until (I think) 1878. Confused? Join the club. Ann

We out west don't even use townships, and I thought boroughs were just something to divide up New York City, and I have never seen Starrucca used with any documents that I have come across in Wayne county, (limited experience noted, please) so what is it and how does it relate to my ancestors? Iris
Hi, Iris! you asked: From: [email protected] Date: Tue, 27 Jun 2000 20:59:01 EDT Excuse my ignorance... what is the borough division.... We out west don't even use townships, and I thought boroughs were just something to divide up New York City, and I have never seen Starrucca used with any documents that I >have come across in Wayne county, (limited experience noted, please) so what is it and how does it relate to my ancestors? Hi, Iris! I'm from NY, where a borough is different from a borough in PA. There are others on this list who are far more knowledgeable, and who could give a much better explanation. That being said, my understanding is that these are two different types of self government, with a borough having a strong mayor form, and a township having a board of supervisors. It appears (to me) that a borough is self contained, while a township may be composed of several parts. A borough may be a part of a township, but a township cannot be part of a borough. (Now don't all jump at me if I'm wrong -- at least I'm trying here!) Other boroughs you may be more familiar with are Honesdale, Montrose, Susquehanna, Waymart, and many others. As to how any of this relates to your ancestors, I've no idea. If one happened to have been a borough mayor, perhaps it would matter. I do not recall any Lillies on any of the lists and records on our site, but many of the surnames frequently discussed on this and other area lists do appear there. Perhaps other names in your lines may be included. The point of correct spelling, and of borough rather than township, matters most if we are all striving for accurate info as much as we all say we are. It takes the same amount of time to learn something correctly as it does to learn it wrong, so when we write things out for generations yet to come, there's no reason we can't be accurate.
