Ran across the following list in an old scrapbook at WCHS. Bear in mind that the D&H wasn't the only gravity railroad in the area. Hello All I have added two more townships to the 1850 census data Susquehanna - Harford Wayne - Clinton located at: http://www.dsdata.com.au/genealogy/nepa/census1850.html My apologies to a correspondent where I indicated that the data for Harford was illegible. In fact on the source I have - Clifford and Dundaff are the illegible townships. I will continue to work on the smaller townships - apologies to the lady that asked for Texas Township. It is unfortunately one of the larger ones, and when tackled will be completed in sections. There is one problem becoming apparent with the presentation of the census data. Several of the index pages are getting toooooo large. If anyone has strong feelings on what they would like to see I am beginning to consider alternatives to split the data within the overflowing letters on the indices. Thanks for your continuing interest and support. In particular to the lady that offerred the corrrect names for some illegible ones in Lenox township. I do read the email and corrections will get made - though it may take a couple of weeks to appear. Fred Myers [email protected]
Pat, Definitely interested in your Maddens in Monroe County. You can email me directly if you don't want to clog up the list. [email protected] Thanks, Kathy
Would some kind soul please tell me when the WCHS will be open next week? I plan to be in the area and would like to stop in. Janet Thomas
Does anyone know if the "Union Methodist Cemetery" is actually the "Old Union" Cemetery or the "Union" Cemetery. The latter two are both located in Manchester Township. Tom, My Spellman came from County Cork, no detail of townland or parish. Mary Spellman1830-1891 married Thomas Madden. They were married in the states in 1855. i don't even know exactly when she got here. I also have the Spellman name through another line. Cornelious Spellman's daughter, Sarah born in 1857, married Edward Tormey. It is thought that these Spellmans were related, by I don't have any proof. Kathy
Hello list, I am researching the names - MADDEN, REIDY, O'CONNOR, TORMEY, SPELLMAN, MCNAMARA, and BOLAND. All settled between Wayne and Pike counties, mostly the Ledgedale area. Is anyone else researching these families? Kathy
Hello List, With regard to the warrantee deeds of the 1800's in Wayne County: Am I correct in assuming these deeds were the first deeds issued to the first settlers who came to Wayne County? Were they of any particular size? Is there any particular history behind them? Was it a particular way in which the land was laid out? I have looked at the Green 1872 Atlas of Wayne where the names are listed. Any information would be appreciated...... Thanks, Dorothy

Jean McNamara suggests that a brief report on the June 17 Genealogy Fair in Honesdale is in order. I would say that it was most successful - especially for a first try. We're now calling it Genealogy Fair 2000, since we hope it will be repeated. One hundred three tickets were sold, and the Methodist Church Fellowship Hall was packed. Peter Osborne of the Minisink Valley Historical Society, Susan Bennett-Dyson of the Susquehanna County Historical Society and Joe Bryer, of the Genealogical Research Society of Northeastern Pennsylvania spoke in the morning, and Richard Eldred, Wayne County Historian, hosted the day's events and was the after-lunch speaker. We then split into two workshops - one for beginners led by Richard and the other for more experienced researchers led by Joe. Each of the participating groups had a table where they sold their wares and gave advice on research in their particular areas, and it appeared that sales were brisk. Each of the groups shared in the proceeds based on tickets sold, and I believe that we were all pleasantly surprised at the end of the day. The two main complaints were lack of air conditioning and a speaker system, both of which should be corrected next year. Other than that, the feedback we received has been overwhelmingly favorable. Ann
To all, Thanks for such a huge response to the cemetery index project. We have over 200 names this week. I have two or three volunteers that have offered to get info when they visit Wayne this year, in addition to my mom and sister. I appreciate any and all help. Please visit the site, cemetery lists, index, etc and let me know what you can contribute. If you are going to visit a cemetery to do a little hunting, visit the site first and run off a current list of the buried that we have, that way we will not duplicate the efforts. Dear Robert, I received this email from the list a while ago, but didn't have time to respond. I am related to the Comptons from Honesdale, and would like to know if there is a connection between the Honesdale Comptons, and the Hawley Comptons? My earliest ancestors that I have found are Dunning R. Compton, born August 12, 1818, and died October 18, 1895. He married Martha Dexter, born JAN. 17, 1822, and died Feb. 1, 1885.They had several children:C.E. Compton, born April 8, 1841; Martin Compton, May 7, 1844; Victrine Shelden Compton, May 1, 1846; Lucy born June 13, 1849; William Compton and Willis Compton, twins, born April 12, 1855, and Dunning W. Compton, born July 2, 1850. I am directly related to William Compton, he married Louisa Groner Compton. They had Leo Compton, born October 2, 1888. He was my grandfather . Do any of these sound familiar to you? Please let me know if you have any connections. I was recently trying to identify everyone in an 1860s photo album of my great great grandmother Mary Ellen Ross Hankins. Of the labeled photos - I know who everyone but one person is. The mystery photo is of a Mrs. Harry Knight. All of the other photos date from the mid-late 1860s. Everyone else is related to or descended from either John Hankins/Susan Thomas, John Ross/Love Hurd, Benjamin Tyler/Sarah Kellam or John Ross/Sarah Kellam - and all were living in Sullivan County NY or Wayne County PA. I'm assuming that Mrs. Harry Knight was somehow related to one of these families and likely lived the area. Can anyone help identify her? Thanks Patty Hankins
Subj: FW: NARA seeks comment on draft Strategic Plan Date: 6/30/00 9:50:46 PM Eastern Daylight Time From: [email protected] (Deborah Gaudier) FYI. Deborah ++++++ NARA is updating our Strategic Plan, Ready Access to Essential Evidence: The Strategic Plan of the National Archives and Records Administration, 1997-2007 in compliance with the Government Performance and Results Act. We are also updating it to assess new conditions facing NARA today and to build on what we have learned through implementing our current plan. We are asking customers and other stakeholders to assess the changed Plan so that we can be sure the final version reflects real concerns and meets real needs. The draft plan is available on our web site at http://www.nara.gov/vision/PlanUpdate.html. Please send your comments on the draft revised NARA Strategic Plan to [email protected] by July 21, 2000. We have updated our Strategic Plan to: - acknowledge new developments, such as our funding increases from the Congress and the Administration, our focus on Targeted Assistance to increase our records management help to Federal agencies, and our research success in demonstrating the feasibility of an Electronic Records Archives - acknowledge those things that now are achievements rather than objectives, such as designing re-encasements for the Charters of Freedom, getting Federal Register publications online, and launching our reimbursable records-center program - identify the current status of activities in which progress is underway, such as meeting our space needs, improving service to veterans, and creating an Internet-accessible catalog of all our holdings nationwide - remove references no longer relevant and substitute current information for dated examples, statistics, and activities, such as the (increased) volume of use of our web site offerings, and the (increased) volume and kinds of electronic records with which we must deal - remove objectives that have proven infeasible or unnecessary, such as the consolidation of our holdings in just a few facilities; and to add objectives, such as providing archival quality space for military service records that we recently determined should be kept permanently. We look forward to your comments. Lori Lisowski Director, Policy and Planning Staff NARA "What one accepts, one teaches."
