Anyone with Ancestry.com membership willing to do a quick look-up for me?I'm leaving for the nearest Family History Center in an hour, but can't find one of my critical notes that I pulled from Ancestry.com last time I had membership priveleges. Smith Grubbs/Grubb was in the War of 1812, and is in the muster rolls and pension rolls for Virginia, but I can't remember the regiment that was listed. Thanks!! Is anyone researching Amasa JONES b 1782 in CT? Moved to Salem Twp sometime perhaps around 1810. Another lister and I have come up with some very puzzling and intriguing things. Apparently Amasa JONES and Betsey and John SHARP were half brothers and sister. We need to find out if Zipporah JONES SHARP moved to Wayne Co and married a WOODWARD. Does anyone else out there know? Hi List family, cousins, memb ers and tie ins--- Thanks for the heads up on this to the list--I was sent the same item, there are loads better sites out there. Southern Tier NY and NE PA book, Vol. 1 is ----- 4 weeks behind, but--not due to my houserfull of flu so much as --tons of info sent me in the past 5/ 6 weeks---my eyes are hanging by little threads and bouncing on the keys--- several cousins ocated me and are contributing really neat items--- Found an entire family of descendants--rather, they found me--- a "lost Kellam" line ouf of NE PA--- went to Greene co., PA, then Monongalia Co., WVA--landed in KY and then Perry Co., MO---wow! the photos alone are a dead give a way!! Amazing how those family resemblances show up--even the same family jokes about the ears, nose, height!!! And wehaven't been immedaite close in kin in 200 years. Strong DNA or what!!! Managed to sort out two of the Lord groups---and ditto Adams--altho, answer 2 questions---get back 4 more. anyway, that's the update from this corner of the east coast. Hope all on the list are well, not too badly weathered in, or out!!! Now you know why I'm quiet--- Sheila // Firehair "What you accept, you teach"

Christina Drake was a > daughter of Jesse Drake and Abigail Tyler (Abigail's first husband was Moses > Thomas). My information comes from Williard Tyler Brigham's The Tyler Genealogy, The Descendants of The Branford Connecticut Line of Roger Tyler. This information in the book is largely undocumented - but where I have been able to document in primary or reliable secondary sources - it has been fairly accurate. Sorry I can't be more help. Hopefully Iris will jump in soon and help us get the Lillie line straightened out. <grin> Patty > Subject: Re: [PAWAYNE-L] Bates & Lillie > Date: Sun, 28 Jan 2001 10:01:34 +0800 > From: Frederick Myers <[email protected]> > To: [email protected] > > Sheila Bates wrote: > > > > I am trying to find information on Henry N. I have no doubts that Iris will add more comments as this is her line. But I have a problem with the problem.... Jonathan son of Jeremiah was born according to Iris' records in 1794 and his wife Eleanor Hendrickson was born abt 1804 http://www.dsdata.com.au/cgi-bin/fgs_scr.cgi?2560 Thus it would not be possible for Mary to be Jonathan's daughter, if she were having children in 1827. I probably do not have all of the records for Jonathan's siblings but that would be a more feasible explanation. http://www.dsdata.com.au/cgi-bin/fgs_scr.cgi?2559 > Henry N. Hello List, Does anyone have John Blair in their lines? I understand that he was of Revolutionary War fame. I'm asking this question for a friend.....he was her grandfather, several generations removed, of course! Thanks, Dorothy
Hi, I am trying to find information on Henry N. Bates. He is believed to have been born in MA in 1803. He married Mary Lillie of Damascus,PA on April 16, 1826. Mary Lillie was the daughter of Jonathan Lillie, son of Jeremiah and Rachael Thomas Lillie. Henry N. Bates and Mary Lillie had three children born in Damascus. Rhoda Satina, born 1827 Erastus Spelman, born in 1830 Jonathan Calvin born in 1833. The family moved to Illinois about 1839 I would be glad to hear from you if you know of this family. Warm wishes Sheila Bates Rhoda
Hi! Either the lists are very quiet, or we're not receiving posts again. Since there's a pause, I'd like to pass along some general info -- The GOOD A fellow researcher, Gary Minder, has created spreadsheets customized for each census year that he wishes to share with all. This was on some of the census lists, and the feedback has been very positive. Entire explanation, etc. can be found at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~minder/ ========= The BAD One of our mailboxes was graced again this morning with a "Hi Fellow Genealogist" letter, and a "not to the general public" offer of 30% off a lifetime subscription to their "award-winning service" just for helping them by answering a survey. Old hands at online genealogy will immediately see warning signs, but it is a tempting offer -- all info in one place -- and especially tempting to many newer researchers feeling overwhelmed. PLEASE READ THE TERMS OF SERVICE!! (Conveniently at the very bottom left corner of the "home" page.) They will tell you that: There are NO refunds. All (ALL) records are on EXTERNAL sites (They link to sites of people like you and me, people who offer info to you free). They do not own, nor are they responsible for inaccuracies or ramifications of, any information accessed through their site. You will have unlimited access to the site for as long as the site is up and running, and open for business. It could close tomorrow (like was already done in past). The terms of service may be changed at any time without notice. ========= and the UGLY While fuming over the above site this morning, I inadvertantly gained access to the "Members Only Area" with a silly madeup log-in. It is impossible to describe how terrible (and ugly) the site is. All of the info belongs to others, and is readily available elsewhere. The majority of the categories, hundreds and hundreds, contain no data whatsoever. And I can't believe this is legal. (Yes, I am naive.) ========= Hope the census spreadsheets are useful to those interested, and that you'll all forgive my "soapboxing" above. Several listers (from other lists) got "taken" by this offer this past summer, so I mean well. I'm new to this group. My family was actually from Perry Co, but the father moved to Wayne Co where he died in 1846. His name was James DICKSON or DIXON. Supposedly, there is an article about the settlement of his estate in the "Academist" on 2 Dec 1846. Does anyone have access to that or know how I could get a copy of it? Thanks! Dana
Orange County Genealogical Society 1841 Historic Courthouse 101 Main Street Goshen, NY 10924 Saturday, February 3, 2001 Business Meeting 9:00 A.M. Program 10:30 A.M. GENEALOGICAL HISTORY OF BLACK FAMILIES IN ORANGE COUNTY presented by Bob Brennan Bob Brennan is Village of Otisville Historian. He has been interested in genealogy since 1981 when he gave his seventh grade Social Studies class an assignment to trace their family and he started to trace his own family. He was very interested in local history and government. Bob was appointed by Governor Carey to the Board of Trustees of Washington's Headquarters in 1977 and served for 10 years. He served on the town board of Wallkill for 16 years and was supervisor when the clean up and dedication of the Pine Hill Cemetery occurred. Bob has published two books on the records and people of the Wallkill area. Most recently Bob has been dedicating himself to compiling as much information as possible about black families of Orange County. He spends countless hours entering information into a database. The program will include The 1870 Census; 1790-1830 Census, black free heads of household; Marriages in Orange County 1908-1928; and the Genealogy of a number of different Orange County families. The program is free of charge and open to the public. If anyone has questions contact Marilyn Terry via e-mail at [email protected]

Things have been very quiet on this list. Thought I'd pass along an excerpt from a letter written in 1844 by my ggaunt Sarah (Sally) Sanford, who had just returned from a visit to her Connecticut birthplace to the wilds of Preston Township, Wayne County: "I don't think the country roads, people or anything else has improved any. On the contrary it is the reverse of that. I intend to get a school if I can for I am sure I cannot content myself if I don't have something or another to do. I don't know but I can have the one in this district. There is a law that females shall not have but a dollar a week. Poor encouragement for one to try to make a living. If you go out to do housework you will have to milk seven or eight cows besides doing housework nine hours, enough to break your back and they they ain't willing to pay you more than fifty cents a week and only a dollar a week for teaching school and then if you want a pair of shoes you must pay a dollar and a half for what you pay a dollar for in New Haven. If you want a piece of calico you must pay twenty-five cents for what you would have to pay twelve and a half cents for there and fourteen cents for cotton cloth that you would pay ten cents for etc. etc." Sally adds at the end of her letter, "Mother is homesick enough and sick of the Beach [sic] Woods. Joseph and Jane take a sight of comfort. They have got a pretty little daughter but Jane hasn't got very smart yet." Sally's parents soon after returned to Connecticut, but Sally stayed in Wayne County, married Stephen V. Niles of Pleasant Mount and died of consumption at the age of 40. Joseph and Jane (Woodmansee), thankfully, also stayed behind in Wayne County and became my gggrandparents. Does anyone else have stories of their Wayne County ancestors? Ann
Searching for info on the following families: KELLEY - Searching for the family of Benjamin (Thomas?) KELLEY b c 1772 NY (according to 1850 PA census) m Mary HOEL/HOLE early 1800's probably NY. Mary was a sister to the many HOEL's in Oregon Twp., Wayne Co. area 1850's. The family migrated to Wayne Co., PA by 1822 when a dau., Nancy, was born. (Another dau., E. Mahala, married into the BUCKINGHAM family of CT.) It is believed the family were very active Presbyterians. I have no info as to Ben's parentage. Family lore says the KELLEY's came from England on their own ship as they were shipbuilders. OLSOMMER - Denis b 1822 Alsace-Lorraine, FR d in Pike Co., PA m Barbara HILD b Alsace-Lorraine, FR - they married in Brooklyn, NY 1845, and had 7 children. Interested in contacting any OLSOMMER's in the area. TURNER - Searching for Isaac TURNER b 1788 Paris, FR d 1867 Wayne Co., PA. Isaac m Nancy KELLEY in 1848 after he stopped at her farm in Wayne Co., PA and worked for her. They had 8 children: Mathilda who was a post mistress for NayAug, PA; John Milton (may have been married to a DEPEW); Franklyn Varney (m Carolena MEYER); Mary Angeline; James Buchanan; Rosilla Correll m LOCKARD & HAUSER; Elma Martha DENISON & BIRD; and Elmer Marcus (last 2 were twins). Family lore says Isaac 'came from the Middle West' when he stopped at Nancy's farm and that he had been married twice before. Nothing is know of these marriages but he had children from them. In the 1850 Wayne Co., PA census a John TURNER is shown living next door to Isaac/Nancy. His children were: Maria, George and Milton - twins; Victoria and Virginia, and Henry. Since the name MILTON shows up in the children with Nancy plus twins in each family (this also carried into the next generation), I feel this John was an earlier son of Isaac. Thanks for any help/info. Diane ~ ********** ~ ********** ~ ********** ~ ********** ~ CHECK OUR QUERY GENEALOGY FAMILY PAGE - www.familytreemaker.com/users/a/n/d/Sharon-D-Andreasen/
Wishing all researchers a happy and productive new year. Included in the 1850 census data for NE Penna are the first two townships for Pike County - Green and Milford. This is a bit more than 15% of the entries for the county in that year. Additionally another couple of hundred entries have been made to the family lineage data and quite a few new links between that data and the census data have been made.
