    3. Angel, Marriages were recorded from 1885 on. The courthouse doesn't do lookups, but the Wayne County Historical Society has the microfilm and would send you a copy (or just the info) for a modest fee. Contact Gloria McCullough at [email protected] Of course, it's possible that they were not married in Wayne County. Another alternative, since you have a death date, is obtaining a copy of Martha's death certificate from PA Vital Records in New Castle - also for a modest fee. 1. [PAWAYNE-L] Wayne County Research Help needed immediately!
    2. Anisah A Haynes
    3. Hi all, I am thinking about going to Wayne County on Wed. or Thurs. on a spur of the moment research trip from New Jersey. Probably for two days. My ancestor's married there in Honesdale in 1844 (Jacob Cole and Priscilla Reed). He was from Warren Co, NJ, she was born in PA. Could anyone help me in telling me what resources are there for that time period, along with any address and phone numbers? I am not sure when they left that area, but by 1856 their 3rd child was born in Illinois. I would greatly appreciate any help anyone could give! My kids are at their cousin's house this week for a vacation, and Honesdale is less than 3 hours away, so I thought this is the best time to go there during the week. Thanks Loads!!! Anisah :)

    3. I am having a rough time trying to solve the ancestry of my deadend, Joshua Case, who was born in Tusten, Sullivan Co., NY and moved to Atco, Wayne Co., after 1830. He reportedly died trying to swim across the Delaware from Narrowsburg to his home during a mild winter. I will not speculate on his blood alcohol level at the time. His children, Warren Leonard, Chancy, Harriet, and Sacket were born bet. 1823-1829 in NY. Wife unknown. Since I have not been able to find him in any later census than 1830 in Tusten I am guessing his death occurred bet. 1830-40. Are there any Cases (or any of the other above families) on the net? I would love to exchange info with you. My line is William Kenneth Case/Marie Minckler, John Case/Minnie Dexter, Amzi Case/Louise Buddenhagen, Warren Leonard Case/Elizabeth Sherwood, Joshua Case/?. All Cases from the Indian Orchard, Welcome Lake, and Damascus areas. I am also cross-posting to the Sullivan and Orange Co., NY lists. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Send instant messages & get email alerts with Yahoo! 3. Searching for info on the following families: KELLEY - Searching for the family of Benjamin (Thomas?) KELLEY b c 1772 NY (according to 1850 PA census) m Mary HOEL/HOLE early 1800's PA. Mary was a sister to the many HOEL's in Oregon Twp., Wayne Co. area 1850's. The family migrated to Wayne Co., PA by 1822 when a dau., Nancy, was born. (Another dau., E. Mahala, married into the BUCKINGHAM family of CT.) It is believed the family were very active Presbyterians. I have no info as to Ben's parentage. Family lore says the KELLEY's came from England on their own ship as they were shipbuilders. A son, Robert, married into the KILLAM family of Wayne Co. Benj. KELLEY had 2 tanneries in Wayne Co. OLSOMMER - Denis b 1822 Alsace-Lorraine, FR d in Pike Co., PA m Barbara HILD b Alsace-Lorraine, FR - they married in Brooklyn, NY 1845, and had 7 children. Interested in contacting any OLSOMMER's in the area. TURNER - Searching for Isaac (de la Tourneur) TURNER b 1788 Paris, FR d 1867 Wayne Co., PA. Isaac m Nancy KELLEY in 1848 after he stopped at her farm in Salem, Wayne Co., PA and worked for her. They had 8 children: Mathilda who was a post mistress for NayAug, PA; John Milton (may have been married to a DEPEW) lived in Cortez; Franklyn Varney (m Carolena MEYER); Mary Angeline; James Buchanan; Rosilla Correll m LOCKARD & HAUSER; Elma Martha DENISON & BIRD; and Elmer Marcus (last 2 were twins). Family lore says Isaac 'came from the Middle West' when he stopped at Nancy's farm and that he had been married twice before. Nothing is know of these marriages but he had children from them. In the 1850 Wayne Co., PA census a John TURNER is shown living next door to Isaac/Nancy. His children were: Maria, George and Milton - twins; Victoria and Virginia, and Henry. Since the name MILTON shows up in the children with Nancy plus twins in each family (this also carried into the next generation), I feel this John was an earlier son of Isaac. 1. Re: [PAWAYNE-L] Wayne Co. Fair
    2. Ann O'Hara
    3. I did my stint at the J. B. Park Farm Museum at the Fair last night. The fair is a good deal - parking and admission (including rides and most entertainment) for only $6 a person. It is still primarily an agricultural fair, but of course special events like the Demolition Derby are very popular. The food stands have taken on an international flavor (Mexican food, gyros and rice pudding in addition to the ubiquitous sausage and peppers and funnel cake). To add a bit to the history of the fair (from "History of Wayne County, 1798-1998" by Walter B. Barbe and Kurt A. Reed), "The first attempt to establish a Wayne County Fair occurred early in the history of the County. The first Wayne County Agricultural Society was organized in Bethany on November 17, 1821. Solomon Moore, Jacob Davis, and John K. Woodward were president, secretary, and treasurer, respectively. On November 12, 1822, the firt fair was held in Bethany. Turnout for the fair was good, and it was considered a success. "The second fair was held in Mount Pleasant on November 4, 1823, at the request of the residents of that township. This one was not thought to be successful as both attendance and exhibits were down compared to the year before. The fair returned to Bethany on November 2, 1824. "The second Agricultural Society was established at the Court House in Honesdale on September 9, 1847. The fair was successful until 1856 when problems again rose for the Society. The treasurer at that time refused to turn over funds to the managers. When news of this spread, the public was outraged and the second Agrucultural Society came to an end. "In the fall of 1861, William H. Ham suggested a revival of the Society. On December 2, 1861, a meeting was held in the Court House where it was decided that a new incorporated organization would be formed..." ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jean McNamara" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, August 08, 2001 1:02 AM Subject: [PAWAYNE-L] Wayne Co. 2. Hi, Thanks to all who responded to my query regarding the Catholic Church records. Other than Queen of Peace in Hawley it seems the other Catholic churches were in Honesdale. The church in White Mills was a mission church and it's records are at Queen of Peace in Hawley. Carol

    1. Re: [PAWAYNE-L] Catholic Church records.
    2. Ann O'Hara
    3. Carol, A two-month wait is very speedy compared to the National Archives and many states (NY comes to mind). If Queen of Peace reports no records, then they don't exist, because they have a very knowledgeable volunteer researcher. You might try writing to St. John the Evangelist R. C. Church in Honesdale, but it is unlikely that they would have traveled that far to have their children baptized. I looked at the original census for 1870, 1880 and 1900 and found five children born between 1860 and 1870 and three (assuming that there were two sons named James) or two (if James' age is wildly inaccurate) born between 1870 and 1880. The oldest son, William Jr., was born in New York State, and the rest of the children were born in Pennsylvania. William reported in 1900 that he emigrated in 1865, but by 1870 he was already reporting two children born in the U. S. before 1865. Every member of the family gives a different age in the three censuses, but it is clearly the same family. Since they were living in Scranton by 1900, you might want to check there for church records (they lived on South Irving Ave.), but the children all were born before the move, or at least the ones born before 1880. It's interesting that William says that he has been married 35 years but Ellen is not on the 1900 census. There is one fundamental question. How do you know that they were Catholic? Not all Irish were Catholic and not all Catholics were devout or even religious. I know from my own family that a strong anti-clerical streak ran through the Irish community, and it's possible that William and Ellen chose not to have their children baptized - or baptized at Queen of Peace at any rate. I found no obituaries or gravestone inscriptions for any of these Hams in Wayne County cemeteries, particularly Queen or Peace, St. John's and St. Mary Magdalen's - the only Catholic cemeteries anywhere near Hawley. If you haven't already, I would get death certificates for each of the children to try to pin down their whereabouts and religious inclinations. If you have a death date for William Sr., a death record and/or obituary might shed some light.
