    1. Re: [PAWAYNE] POORHOUSE Information
    2. Ann O'Hara
    3. Actually, the "poorhouse" in Waybe County was only for residents of Texas Township and later Honesdale. The cemetery is still there, although there are no markers. The other townships handled their needs locally. 1. [PAWAYNE] POORHOUSE Information
    2. Linda Crannell
    3. We would like to invite you to re-visit our website, The POORHOUSE STORY (a clearinghouse for information about 19th century American poorhouses) at http://www.poorhousestory.com <http://www.poorhousestory.com/> . We have just published the list of residents of the Wayne County poorhouse from the 1880 Census DIRECTIONS: At the homepage (link above), click on POORHOUSES BY STATE, then on Pennsylvania on the table of states, and then on Lackawanna from the table of counties. If you have been to the website recently you may have to click REFRESH or RELOAD on the browser to see the new information. There are other pages on the site which may give you some interesting perspective on poorhouses. They are off the homepage and include: the HISTORY page and the LETTER TO GENEALOGISTS (which explains why you might climb over your own "brick walls" at the poorhouse) as well as FEATURED ARTICLES. There are great tips for researching poorhouse records for yourself on the RECORDS page; and you might want to subscribe to our (almost) bi-monthly newsletter (which you can do in the lower right corner of the homepage). The information on our site will only grow through the submissions of generous readers. If you would like to e-mail me . please do so off-list because I cannot maintain subscriptions to as many lists as we post messages on. (You can use an e-mail link off one of our web pages.) We hope you enjoy the site! Thanks, Linda Crannell (aka=The Poorhouse Lady)

    2. Jean McNamara
    3. Looking for info/descendants of William & Fanny (McGowty) Doolittle. Daughters Lucetta & Julia. In 1880 they were still in Manchester Twsp., Wayne Co. By 1890 William may have passed away & Fanny was living at 28 Canaan St., Carbondale, Lackawanna Co. In 1892 Fanny was at 9 Dickson Hill, Carbondale & her then widowed mother, Julia Ann (HUDSON) McGowty, born abt. 1812-13, was lliving with her. Fanny was born abt. 1849, daughter of Elisha McGowty & Julia Ann HUDSON. Hoping for another connection & possibly living descendants of my HUDSON family. Any clues appreciated. This area became known as "Bartleson Hill" thereafter. (source: son Henry Bartleson's obit.) John Sharp b. 1792 CT migrated westward and bought land in Wayne (Canaan twp.?) in 1813. (source: courthouse record of land sale) William Harris and Betsey Sharp came to Hemlock Hollow (Lakeville), Wayne PA in 1828 (source: son CHarles Harris' obit.) Holly
