Judy, Ref your comments below: Here's what happened to Daniel Lane from South Strabane township - he moved to California. Wash Reporter Newspaper, April 16, 1895, page 2, col 5 - Local Glances.... http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=f1xuXVtw34IC&dat=18950416&printsec=frontpage&hl=en Carole ________________________________ From: J.A. (LANE) died between 1880 Census and probably bef. Friday, March 8, 1895 Carole, Thank you very much for this! I figured she had been buried where her brother was; so this newspaper proves my theory. So Sarah J. Flowers died Friday, March 8, 1895 in Uniontown Funeral was held in Uniontown by Episcopal preacher. But she was buried with her family in a "German Baptist Dunkard" aka "South Pigeon Creek Dunkard Cemetery" which is the daughter chuch/cemetery of "Ten Mile Church of the Brethren" at Marianna. Now what I NEED so much is to find a mention in Local Glances, or a Death Notice, or a Funeral Notice for MARY A. LANE FLOWERS, widow of Samuel Flowers who died about 1879 and was a Stage Coach Driver on the Pike. Mary A. Lane Flowers was born between 1818 and died between the 1880 Census and before the death of her daughter, Sarah on Friday, March 8, 1895. She resided in the City of Washington. Mary A. Flowers was the daughter of John Lane Sr. Catherine Baker Lane they lived in West Bethlehem Twp. She had 3 brothers (maybe more)-- 1. John Jr.-- went to Indiana before 1830 2. Joseph - went to Ohio before 1831 3. Reverend Daniel Lane - stayed in South Strabane Twp Mary A. Flowers was the mother of : John Flowers who died in young adulthood. Elizabeth Flowers Zediker, m. John/Jack Zediker, S. Strabane residence Caroline Flowers, may have been married once but kept maiden name Lucy Flowers McKnight (? sp?), died before 1879 leaving one unk. sex child Rebecca Flowers McKinley-- she was married to a rich oil man and lived on East Beau St... so, I'd think the write up for her mother would certainly have made at least 1 line in the newspaper. The German Baptists or aka "Dunkard" or the official name aka "Church of the Brethren" people were very private and didn't make a lot of public records. So I'm just hoping Mary's death got put in the newspaper anyway. Let me know if anyone sees her. No, actually, that's (b. 1810) Reverend Daniel Lane's *grandson*. Rev. Daniel Lane born 1810 was a minister at Ten Mile (German Baptist "Dunkark") Church of the Brethren at Marianna, PA, a church his father, John Lane SR, helped to build. Rev. Daniel stayed in South Strabane Twp. until his death. Daniel H. Lane (Dan Lane) was the *grandson*. Dan Lane caused one of the county most exciting events-- he staged his own "death". He killed a chicken, put blood on his saddle and hat, and left his saddled horse grazing on the National Pike about 4 miles outside of Washington, within 4 miles of his father's home (father Robert J. Lane). An alarm went out--they searched high & low for young man Dan. Then they looked for his 'dead body', even draining people's wells and digging on people's properties. UNFORTUNATELY, several neighbors became "suspects" in his "death", including Jack Zediker (who'd married a FLOWERS girl... e.g. a cousin to Dan). That ended up causing bad feelings between the two families--- a rift that stayed more than 100 years (sad face). In the meantime, young "Dan" had left his horse on the Pike, hiked across to the nearest milk station on the RR, jumped a train, and went to Manitoba, Canada, then down to California, where a few cousins had moved several years earlier. All this came to light when "Dan Lane" sent a cheeky Letter to the Editor stating his death had been "greatly exaggerated"==he was alive and well in California. i.e. he admitted to staging his "death" as a "joke". I don't know how his Dad and Mom, and the Zedikers, didn't just go "kill him" for his foolish prank! He caused a lot of grief, sorrow, and bad feelings. And we think today's young adults do dumb things--LOL ! If anyone sees the front page news about this, I already have the articles about the "disappearance" and "death" search. So I won't need them. I sure do appreciate any articles about LANE or FLOWERS in particular.
