Maybe it will help someone in their research. I use to live in the Gettysburg area and I new this lady and her husband James Hunter Hammett and son, James Newton Hammett. Her husband and son were my doctors at one time. She was a very gracious woman who enjoyed helping people and getting involved in the community. It is so sad to read that she has passed away. I may be violating copyright laws posting the obit here but if I am I apologize in advance. Again hope this may help in someones research. Nancy J. Hammett Nancy Jeane Hammett, 83, 85 Beechwood Drive, Fairfield, died quietly Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2007 at her home after a lengthy illness. Mrs. Hammett was born July 31, 1924 in Finleyville, Pa, the daughter of the late Newton Daniel and Margaret Mary Fawcett Yant. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Dr. James Hunter Hammett. Mrs. Hammett was a lifelong member of St. John Lutheran Church in Fairfield, where she served in many capacities ranging from president of the Church Ladies Organization to organizing cooking for the Fairfield Lions Club. Nancy Jeane graduated from Clairton High School and later the University of Pittsburgh, with dual majors in commercial and academic studies. She was a member of Chi-Omega Sorority. She worked for Dr. Jonas Salk organizing charts and data in the development of the Polio Vaccine. She was briefly employed as an airline stewardess with the Pennsylvania Airlines. Following that, Mrs. Hammett taught commercial and general studies at Shanksville High School, Shanksville, Pa; Hickory High School, Hickory, Pa; and Upper Dublin High School in the Philadelphia area. After moving to the Fairfield area, Mrs. Hammett restored and operated the Fairfield Inn for a number of years and then along with her husband, owned and operated Hickory Bridge Farm in Orrtanna from 1977 until they turned the operation over to their daughter and her husband, Mary Lynn and Robert Martin. Mrs. Hammett was the first woman to be elected to the Gettysburg Hospital Board of Directors. She has served on the Hamiltonban Township Planning Board. She was a member of the Carroll Valley Garden Club, the Gettysburg Hospital Auxiliary, member of the Adams County Medical Society, board member of Strawberry Hill Nature Center, life member of the Fairfield Fire Company, Adams County Historical Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, South Mountain Audubon Society, American Association of University Women, Red Hat Society, Cannonaders and Fair Squares Square Dancing Groups. She was a leader in both Fairfield 4-H and the Cub Scouts. She was involved with the local Food Pantry, Soup Kitchen and Meals on Wheels. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Hammett is survived by a daughter, Mary Lynn Martin and her husband Robert of Orrtanna; sons, Dr. James Newton Hammett and his wife Mary Lou of Fairfield, Daniel Edward "Doc" Hammett and his wife Sherry of Aspers, the Rev. David Marshall Hammett and his wife Kay of New Bedford, Mass., Gordon Ley and his wife Diane of Fairfield; nine grandchildren, James Thomas Hammett and his wife Lacy of Fairfield, Matthew Marshall Hammett and his wife Angela of Massachusetts, Jonathan Hammett of Florida, Christina Hammett of Connecticut, Amanda Ley Jarosh and her husband Thomas of Pittsburgh, Jessica Ley Lee and her husband Steve of Fairfield, Abigail Hammett of Gardners, Robert Martin and his wife Sarah of Virginia, Kate Martin of Ohio; two great-grandchildren, Matthew Lee and Benjamin Jarosh; a sister, Narcissa Mae Campbell of Newton, Pa; a brother, Samuel Joseph Yant of Lexington, S.C.; and a number of nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother! , Newton Daniel Yant Jr. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Oct. 16 at 11 a.m. from St. John Lutheran Church, Fairfield, with the Rev. Christopher Frye officiating. Interment will be in Fairfield Union Cemetery, Fairfield. There will be a viewing Monday evening from 7 until 9 p.m. at the church and Tuesday from 9 a.m. until the time of the service. Memorials can be made to St. John Lutheran Church, 13 E. Main St., Fairfield, PA 17320 or The Adams County Historical Society, 111 W. Confederate Ave., Gettysburg, PA 17325. The Monahan Funeral Home in Fairfield is in charge of the arrangements.
