A Miner's Institute has been organized in McDonald, meeting every Thursday night in the offices of the Pittsburg Coal Co. Miners and officers up and down the valley are much interested and methods and measures for the safety and efficiency of miners are discussed. Benjamin FEREDAY has been chosen as president and a most practical and instructive paper read by him last Thursday evening will be published next week. Under the efficient management of Superintendent FRICHTMAN the mines in this district are making many important and permanent improvements. At the Jumbo power plant two large 500 volt generators and eight 19-A Jeffrey mining machines have lately been installed. By the middle of March it is believed that these two mines will be among the best if not the best in the Panhandle division. Within the past year a saving of about $700 per month has been effected by the installation of Epping-Carpenter wood lined cast iron pipes to remove the mine water which is so highly impregnated with acid that it will cut through a six inch iron pipe in a week. An analysis of the mine water shows 1013 grains of sulphuric acid to the gallon of water, a very high percentage, and very destructive to pipes and pumps. The up-to-date methods of the mines and miners of the McDonald division are attracting considerable attention in the valley and the Miners' Institute will shortly number in its membership the progressive miners from Burgettstown to Carnegie.
