GRIFFITH, MARTIN, HENDRICK, MILLER, MCPHERSON, GLASS Emory GRIFFITH, 20, of Imperial, was instantly killed near Candor Monday afternoon, December 24, while instructing Nicholas DUFOUR, a well known farmer of the Candor locality, how to operate an automobile. DUFOUR apparently lost control of the machine and it went hurtling over an embankment. GRIFFITH suffered a broken neck. Death was instantaneous. DUFOUR escaped with some bruises about the face. He went to Midway at once and consulted Deputy Coroner J. C. MCNARY. DUFOUR had planned to take the driver's examination at Burgettstown on Wednesday. William H. MARTIN, for two years a principal of the Burgettstown schools, age 52, died Wednesday afternoon, December 26, 1928, in his home in Wilkinsburg. He leaves his wife, two sons, and two daughters. Funeral services are being held this Friday afternoon in the Second Presbyterian church, Wilkinsburg. Burial will be in the Woodlawn cemetery. Pearl HENDRICK, 38, colored, of the Francis mine near Burgettstown, died in the Washington hospital Tuesday night from bullet wounds suffered in a Christmas day quarrel. John FRANCE, 46, colored, is a prisoner in the county jail charged with the shooting. He was taken into custody by County Detective Frank CREPS, who investigated the shooting. A woman is said to have been the basis of the quarrel, Lula HELM, 29 and Jennie DEACON, 29, both colored, of Francis mine, are held as material witnesses. Francis William MILLER, 56, died Tuesday morning, December 25, 1928, in the St. Francis Hospital, Pittsburgh. He was a resident of Mt. Pleasant township. He leaves a sister, Mrs. John C. BANE of Pittsburgh, and two brothers, Ralph E. MILLER of St. Louis, Mo., and Thomas Harold MILLER of Terre Haute, Ind. Funeral services were held in the Mt. Pleasant U. P. church, Hickory, this Thursday afternoon. Burial was in the Hickory cemetery. George W. MCPHERSON, 89, for forty years a resident of the Northside, Pittsburgh, died early Tuesday morning, December 25, 1928, in the home of his daughter, Mrs. Howard PEARSON, 2103 Brighton road, Northside, Pittsburgh. Mr. MCPHERSON was a Civil war veteran and a member of Clarke Post No. 62 of the G. A. R. He enlisted in Battery G, Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery in Sewickley at the outbreak of the war and served four ears. He was a member of the Sewickley Methodist Episcopal church. Besides his daughter he leaves four sons: M. W. MCPHERSON, of Imperial, A. R. MCPHERSON of Coraopolis, G. R. MCPHERSON of Brentwood, and C. W. MCPHERSON of Homewood. There are ten grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held in the home of his daughter on this Thursday afternoon. John A. GLASS, a well-known oil man, died at 3:30 o'clock Friday morning, December 21, 1928, in the home of his daughter, Mrs. Herbert JAMES, in Cleveland, Ohio. Mr. GLASS, known among his friends as "Pop" GLASS, formerly resided with his son, C. L. GLASS, in Imperial. He was one of the best known of the older group of oil men in Eastern Ohio, especially in Perry, Licking, and Knox county. He was employed by the South Penn Oil Co. in Western Pennsylvania for many years, until his retirement on pension, when he went to Ohio to make his home among his children. While in Ohio he occasionally worked in the oil field, and was employed by the Jerika Mfg. Co. at Gambier, during the oil excitement and later by W. F. GLASS & Co. at Newark, Ohio. Mr. GLASS was born at Smith's Ferry, Beaver county, Pa., February 6, 1854. His wife, Caroline MANSFIELD GLASS, died in 1896. Mr. GLASS managed his won household following her death and kept his family of seven children together until they were able to provide for themselves. He leaves the following sons and daughters: C. L. GLASS of Imperial, J. H. GLASS of Bentleyville, Mrs. Lettie M. ROSS of Hickory, Mrs. Herbert JAMES of Cleveland, Ohio, Mrs. C. C. RARICK of New Lexington, Ohio, and Mrs. L. M. WILLIAMS of Columbus, Ohio. There are fourteen grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon in the home of his son, C. L. GLASS in Imperial, in charge of the Rev. W. B. PURNELL, pastor of the Valley Presbyterian church, Imperial. Burial was in the Hebron cemetery.
