    3. While researching for one of our "lost" Sprowls in Kansas in 1878-1880's I have located Martin S. Sprowls. Seems he was the attorney for the county of Kingman, and became "partners" in a land scheme with E. A. KARR (or his brother E. M. KARR) and R.G. McClain. All 3 were arrested and once bonded out seems that Sprowls disappeared. Turns out that Sprowls coat was found by Pinkerton detective with a hole in the back. WOW In researching this story, I find that the father of Karr was originally from Washington Co.PA. NOW - from family trees submitted to Ancestry World Tree Project I have located tha parents of Elihu Alley KARR and brother Eldridge Milton KARR. (I believe Eldridge Milton Karr to be the partner, since the name of Milton was used in a history I have located.) Seems "very" bad blood between Sprowls and brother of "Milton" Karr. (per 1880 census for Vinita Twp., Kingman Co.,KS both Karr brothers are listed in addition to another brother William..) According to the trees I located, parents of these Karr fellows were William A. KARR, born March 24, 1813 and Amanda PEACE HOPKINS. (Have also seen maiden name of Amanda as PEES/PEAS). She was born 1814-1815 Nicholad Co., KY. Elihu was born 1846 Indiana; Milton abt. 1852 Iowa and William Henry Karr b. abt. 1850 Iowa. Am searching for Karr researchers who may have further info or who would like further info. Seems that Sprowls, Karr and McClain forged mortgage deeds to amount of $2,500.00 . Interesting, since according to Kingman Co. history land was selling for $1.25 per acre in 1871. A researcher I contacted in that county sent me copies of the trial transcripts from the newspapers and seems that one of the brothers of Milton Karr did NOT get along with Sprowls and Sprowls felt the same. (as both stated that if they saw the other that he would kill him - well, Sprowls coat with the bullet holes was found a mile from the farm of that Sprowls brother!!). I paid $36.50 for this research and am so excited. No other family trees I have located have had any info on Martin S. Sprowls, so another lost soul located. Interestingly, sister of Martin was Louise Sprowls. She married a William Stewart and had visited the county during the trial. (Wm. Stewart d. in 1880, I am told). Wife of Elihu was a STEWARD. Am wondering if mispellings and if could be related. Thanks for any leads or contacts. Ruth Sprowls

    3. This family is a part of an extended case study in the book Ancestry's guide to research by Johni Cerny and Arlene Eakle. If you haven't seen this, you will want to read this book. If your local library does not have it, request it interlibrary loan. It was published in 1985 in the pre computer era, but is a wonderful how-to with this extended family of one of the authors which includes the Karr,Carr and Pease family of Washington County, PA Carol ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ruth Sprowls" <sprowls@ncweb.com> To: <pawashin@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, January 14, 2008 1:24 PM Subject: [PAWASHIN] KARR surname > While researching for one of our "lost" Sprowls in Kansas in > 1878-1880's I have located Martin S.
