I am somewhat familiar with Shades of Death Road, as I taught at Burgettstown High School and would ask my students how the road got its name; however, I never received a definitive answer. Rumor says that a young man hung himself years ago there, but the veracity of that still is yet to be seen. I have been to the cemetery which surrounds the Bethel Ridge Methodist Protestant Church, and I approached the church, but was disappointed to see that it was no longer being used, and this was in 2005. I believe that there are two other dates connected to this church, which, if I remember correctly, must have been posted somewhere on the outside of the church because my notes say say "Bethel MP Church, AD 1832, 1874, 1910." The middle and latter date may indicate re-dedications. Patterson's Mill Cemetery is a moody cemetery, for lack of a better term, in that it seems to be hidden and has many trees surrounding it. If I am not mistaken, it seems to be divided into a Protestant section and a Catholic section. I have some ancestors buried there (Pattersons) but have yet to make a complete study of them. I know that there are children's graves there, all grouped together, and they make me think that perhaps these children died during the flu epidemic in 1918, but I am not positive. I wish that I could offer more! Cindy McWreath Slovan, PA
