    3. Dear Listers: I need some advice on what research information is available on deportations in the early 1900's from Washington County, PA i.e.where that information might be found, what a deportaton record might contain, etc. I suspect my grandfather, MATTHEW MACK, may have been deported from Arden, Washington County back to Glamorgan, Wales in December 1910, possibly due to incorrect information on his 1904 Port of Black Rock manifest-immigration form when he crossed the border from Canada into the United States. In May 1910, Matthew appears on the U.S. Census in Arden boarding with my great-great grandparents, ARCHIBALD AND LUCY MCINTYRE. The family story is that Matthew mysteriously disappeared in December 1910. He did not come home after his shift at the mine one day and no one knew what happened to him. Then in February 1911, Matthew's sister, JOHANNA DOWNEY of Carnegie, PA received a letter from her brother, JOHN MACK who was still living in Wales, that yes, Matthew was back. Matthew was seen in a neighboring town by John's son, Daniel. John Mack was quite miffed that his brother, Matthew, had been there back in Wales that long but had not come to visit him. John did not give any reason as to why Matthew might be back in Wales. My grandmother, FLORENCE (MCINTYRE) MACK always said that Matthew had returned to Wales because of a problem with his "papers" but never explained anything further. In March 1911, my grandfather, Matthew returns to the United States through the Port of New York on the R.M.S. Mauretania out of Liverpool, England. When Matthew finally filed his naturalization papers, he used the Mauretania immigration information on his application. Any help or suggestions as to where I might search for deportation information on my grandfather, Matthew Mack would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Pam Nixon Westland, PA pnixon15378@yahoo.com --------------------------------- Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! Mobile. Try it now.

    3. I don't know about deportation papers, but if he was a miner, the mine company likely had great control over his life. They "imported" workers so... they could just as easily make trouble for him. The time era is ripe for confrontations between miners and companies. Mine "police" often threw miners (wife and children) out of tents or houses in any weather, just because they had the power to do so. If your relative got into any trouble, the mine police could have arrested him, given him to the county sheriff or police. There could be a record in the Prothonotary's office if there was a trial. You could also ask in the Law Library about what records might be local. Judy On 2/23/08, Pamela J.
