AN OPEN INVITATION The Genealogical Society of Southwestern Pennsylvania is a non-profit, educational organization, formed so that members may assist one another, and others, in discovering and preserving information about their families and with recording and preserving the ancestral heritage of southwestern Pennsylvania. The southwestern corner of Pennsylvania, from which our Society is named, is all that area which was the original Washington County, formed March 28, 1781. This is the land to the west of the Monongahela River, from the West Virginia line north, and west and south of the Ohio River to the Ohio line. Parts of the original Washington County are now all of Greene and portions of Beaver and Allegheny Counties. Our Special Reference Room, which houses the societys genealogical material, is located at Citizens Library, 55 South College St., Washington, PA 15301. We also hold our meetings at the library at 2:00 P.M. on the second Sunday of each month, September through May. Our meetings are open to the public as well as our special presentations with plenty of parking behind the library. Acceptance into the GSSWPAs Pioneer Families of Southwestern Pennsylvania is open to any member of the society who can prove that they are a direct descendant from an ancestor who resided in southwestern Pennsylvania before 1830 including the counties of Washington (1781), Westmoreland (1783), Fayette (1783), Allegheny (1788), Greene (1796) and Beaver (1800).
