I recently visited an old church and cemetery on the corner of Bethel Ridge and Shades of Death Road between Avella and Eldersville in Washington County. The church's windows were boarded up. The name on the church is Bethel Ridge Methodist Protestant Church est. 1832. Of course, there are very old burials there, but there are also new burials, too, so the cemetery is still being used. I took pictures. I was intrigued by the name of the very windy, country road named Shades of Death Rd. I drove the length of the road and took pictures. I have found postings on the Internet that say it is the most haunted road in Washington County. Do any of you know the story behind the name of this road? I also came across a cemetery located on Cooke Rd. just off Rt. 50 east of Avella. My friend who was riding with me told me the name of the cemetery was Patterson Mills Cemetery. There was no sign giving the cemetery's name and I don't have this cemetery listed in my database. This cemetery is still be used. Do any of you know anything about this cemetery? Gina Nestor
During my teen years at Burgettstown HighSchool in the 70's we lived on the road: Cole School Road which connected to Shades of Death. Some of the older families we knew out that way said that there had been a hanging way back as well as miners trapped and not recovered; therefore the name and hauntings. There use to be a lady by the name Katherine Slasor ? something, she was in charge of the history of Eldersville. My son told me that years ago there use to be Eldersville tours of Shades of Death down to Kidds Mill area and lots of discussion more detailed on those old roads. I am not sure if the Kidds still live in Eldersville but they use to be involved in the Boy Scouts in Burgettstown. Perhaps the Burgettstown Library holds more info. I wish I could be of further help but moved from that area, many , many, many years ago. I don't know of the cemetery, but will be most interested if anyone else does. I am related to the William J PATTERSON family of Patterson Mills. Wm J and some of the family are buried at Cross Creek Presbyterian. Does anyone know the origin of the name "Cooke Rd" which is referenced? annie On Feb 18, 2008, at 10:42 PM, Jeff & Gina Nestor wrote: > I recently visited an old church and cemetery on the corner of > Bethel Ridge > and Shades of Death Road between Avella and Eldersville in Washington > County.
