Hickory, April 12.−Joseph HEMPHILL, a member of the famous One Hundred and Fortieth regiment, Pennsylvania volunteers and a former jury commissioner of Washington county, died yesterday at 10:30 at his home at this place of apoplexy, aged about 71 years. He was well known throughout the northwestern section of the county, and has lived in Hickory for many years. Mr. HEMPHILL was born in Ireland, but came to this country in early life and learned the trade of shoe making. When the Civil War broke out he enlisted in Company G of the One Hundred and Fortieth regiment, in which many men from Cannonsburg, and the surrounding country served.
