Mrs. Nancy Sumney, aged 88 years of near Kammerer is seriously ill of general debility The Washington Reporter, Washington, Pa. Tuesday, October 23, 1900. Mrs. Nancy Sumney, widow of the late David T. Sumney who died, Dec. 23, 1892, died at the home of her son Benjamin Franklin Sumney of East Beau St. Age 92 years. Her last illness was of short duration. She came to Washington to live last March. Her life having been spent in the Nottingham twp. region. She was the mother of eleven children and nine survive: David, Isaac, and Benjamin Franklin, Mrs. Julia Wolf, Mrs. Joseph Gilmore and Mrs. James Gault. The cemetery census for Pigeon Creek Presbyterian Church, Washington, Co., Pa. lists: Sumny, Nancy, 11/23/1808-10/22/1893 (Lot 8, grave 1) [the 1893 listing for date of year of death is a typographical error. On examination the headstone reads: Nancy Sumny, Nov. 28, 1808-Oct. 22, 1900. Jordan, John W. LL.D. ed. in chief, Genealogical & Personal History of Western Pennsylvania, Vol. II. (New York: Lewis Historical Publishing Company, 1915, pg.645-647.) reports the father of Nancy Hand Sumney was John Hand, a saddler. We believe that Nancy's mother was Mary who was first married to Michael Hallam, Jr. and after his death married John Hand. Mary and Michael Hallam, Jr. had a daughter, Mary, who married John Brownlee, son of James & Jane Leamon Brownlee. The will of Mary Hallam Brownlee, dated August 24, 1864, names her half brother, Isaac Hand and sister, Nancy Sumney. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
