I believe Joseph Lawrence or possibly John Lawrence may have built our house and Joseph Lawrence Jr. (member of House of Representatives) could possibly have been born here as documents from 1786 place a Joseph Lawrence as owner of the tract of land upon which our house sits. Right now we're trying to determine if this is the right Joseph Lawrence as we live in Menallen Twp, Adams County, not far from Hunterstown in a house that has a cornerstone date of 1760 and have traced the house history so far to 1786 with Joseph Lawrence as the owner at that time, but do not know if John Lawrence could have been an earlier squatter on the property. As of now, I have found that John Lawrence was in York (now Adams) County as early as 1750 as an overseer of the poor. From what I can tell, Joseph Lawrence Sr. took over this position around 1785 (per York County records) but then they relocated (back?) to Washington County, Pennsylvania by the census of 1790. If anyone happens to know anything about the 1745-1790 time frame regarding this family, please contact me at [email protected] Thanks!
