I'm confused! Can anyone help with this John HOGE, Esq. (b 1725-d 19 April 1800 son of Jonathan Hoge & ISabella Armstrong) or b 1760?? as the article says; father is David Hoge; brother is William Hoge?? Aug 7, 1824 Died at his resident near this borough on Thursday morning about 1 o'clock, John Hoge, Esq one of the original proprietors and first inhabitants of the town of Washington of dropsy of the breast. The evening before he was walking about his yard. He was born Sept 12, 1760 near Carlisle, PA the oldest son of David Hoge, a respectable citizen and some time sheriff of that county. He entered the armyof the Revolution in 1776 when only 16 years old and served some time as lIeut., but we have no particulars of his military career. During the war he visited this country once or twice and in 1782 he had left the service and settled on the tract where Washington now stands.... The town of Washington was laid out by deceased and his late brother, Wm. Hoge, Esq. In 1789 he was a delegate to the convention which firmed our present constituion. Repeatedly he was the representative of this county in the Legislature and subsequently in the Congree of the U.S. He had an uncommon endowment of mental qualities.... He man had a stronger sense of what was elevated and honorable....
