    1. [PAWASHIN] OT - bad guys preying on List friends via E-mail

    3. OFF-TOPIC but an important heads-up. I am writing this because someone on this list has had their E-mail account hi-jacked and probably does not even know it (yet). Bad guys can steal any e-mail account. Once they get in, they change the password to lock out the owner and use the account to send s**m and other junk, often to defraud you. One method they use to get *you* to respond with money is sending E-mail from your List friend or other friend or even a family member, saying (whoever's account it is) went on an unexpected trip to xxx (typically an overseas location), and was robbed or whatever, and they are embarrassed / ashamed / apologetic, but would you please send money (alternate: call this *supposed* Bank manager--who is "in" on the attempt to defraud) so they can get home (back to the US). The e-mail will look *exactly* like all other emails you've ever gotten from that person, ***especially*** if they have a "signature line" set up in their email account. A good reason to NOT use a sig line, especially one that gives your name / address / phone number! Sig lines make these fake mails LOOK real. If you read closely, the emails have misspellings, typos, and will NOT sound like "your friend" -- cos it isn't sent by your real friend. Do NOT be alarmed and don't feel guilty for "ignoring" the "crisis". Do NOT reply! It is 99.9% safe to say it is likely a hoax and your friend is really safe, at home, locked out of their email account and can't figure out why, and while they're trying to figure that out the bad guys are mailing out fake "I'm in a crisis" letters to everyone in the contacts list! Do a search for email+mugged overseas+send money and educate yourself about these scams. This time, the victim from this List is a genealogist who does work for hire .... next time it could be your account. So safeguard your passwords; change them often. If you know an *alternate* email account for the "victim", send the person a note. But don't reply to the account that sent you the fake email !! For today's "victim", I don't have her alternate email address. :-( OT-- so it's better to not reply on-list. Just wanted people on this List to be aware they might be getting a fake E-mail. Judy
