    1. [PAWASHIN] Faulkner Request for "Laise of Absens"

    3. On 13 December 1793, Captain William Faulkner of Washington, commander of infantry company in Gen. Anthony Wayne's 3d Sub-Legion, requested, but was not granted, leave to take care of "bisness" at home. Margaret Faulkner, reportedly his wife, advertised property for sale in August 1793, and several properties were sold in the fall of that year with Margaret signing a grantee and Absalom Baird signing for William Faulkner as attorney-in-fact. Specific factors leading to request for leave are unknown, but financial, marital, illness, other pressures may have been involved. Margaret M. Faulkner remains mystery woman -- record of marriage or remarriage, common law arrangement, death, abandonment? Would appreciate any references to these Faulkners that members may run across in old family correspondence, media, or other sources. Bill Stokes
