Dear List, The link below is for the edition mentioned in the subject. Fabulous issue! History of California, Millsboro, Fredericktown, and the PA boundary line! Mention of Mrs. Sarah Wilson's funeral. Account of James Nutt killing Dukes. An especially large number of court cases. http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=f1xuXVtw34IC&dat=18830620&printsec=frontpage&hl=en FYI. These newspapers are full of historical information and local happenings. Unfortunately, they have to be manually scanned and that's what I'm doing for my surnames. I've seen most surnames mentioned on this list and the Fayette one. There are also sections on local happenings in adjoining towns in Wash, Fayette, and Greene Counties. Almost every edition has deaths and marriages. More recent ones (e.g., 1870s/1880s) started including births also. Wills are mentioned also. Sometimes a will notice (partition) incluedes all the pertinent family members and surnames for a given person's will! Lastly, the Jan editions often recap deaths for the previous year. Also, periodically, editions will list burials for a given cemetery for the previous year. Carole
Dear List, As a follow on to my earlier email, the next edition (link below) states on page 1, col 1 (June 20,1883) that Sarah Wilson had a will and she donated $ to the second presbyterian church of Washington. http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=f1xuXVtw34IC&dat=18830620&printsec=frontpage&hl=en Carole

Dear list, To expand on what nacs sent (below), my mom lives about a mile from the DAR House listed below. The building, itself, is worth seeing on its own. I think it's on the National Registry, but I may be wrong??? Anyway, I asked my mom to try to look up something for me on a distant cousin who had lived in Westmoreland County, which is where this DAR House is located. I thought she'd go to the library, which is 1/2 mile from her home, but she chose the DAR House instead. I was quite surprised at how quickly they were able to locate the information needed. I thought the'd only help with DAR data and boy was I wrong! So, I highly recommed visiting the DAR House if you're in the area! Oh, and the building is supposed to be haunted too making it even more exciting to visit!! *Our research goal is to learn where each one of these below-listed POWEL/POWELL men came from and who each one married---not sure Isaac ever did marry. * We do know that Joseph POWELL married Barbara BEAM/BEHM, daughter of Abram and Esther BYERS BEAM. We know that a William POWELL married Elizabeth STILLEY and they moved to Logan Co., OH; our source is a Logan Co., OH online history; that history gives that William POWELL's birth year as 1757 and his death year as 1838 in Bellefontaine, Logan, OH. We know that a William POWELL married Agnes COLVIN and have reason to suspect they, too, might have lived in Logan Co., OH; our source is the Vincent COLVIN will that is online in Washington Co., PA. Dickinson Township, Washington Co., PA Tax Lists found in the Law Office at Courthouse, Washington, Washington Co., PA 1787: William POWELL owned 50 acres and was right next door to Widow POWELL Widow POWELL born when and where unknown; Isaac POWELL born 1766 if this was Isaac's first appearance on any tax list; Isaac was a single man; 1788: William POWELL owner of 50 acres, married man; John POWELL born 1767 if this was John's first appearance on any tax list; John was a married man; Isaac POWELL born 1766 and remained single in 1788; page 142: John BEAM and William POWELL listed as single men but no tax info provided; if they were born 1767, there is conflict between the years of birth for John and this William POWELL unless they were twins; while physically possible to give birth in one year to two separate children, it is unusual; further research necessary. Please note: Widow POWELL is not enumerated on the tax list of 1788. 1789: Isaac POWELL born 1766, still single man; William POWELL born possibly 1767, married man; John POWELL born possibly 1767, married man; Joseph POWELL born 1768, single man. Please note that the William POWELL, owner of 50 acres is no longer in Dickinson Township, Washington County, PA, 1789. It may be of interest to note that in 1783, both Abraham and Jacob BEAM were in Peters Township from which Dickinson Township was formed. We know there was a John POWEL in the area, 1769. John POWEL sold land to a ZIMMERMAN after 1790 or so, and ZIMMERMAN patented the land. We know there was a William POWEL in the area, 1769. As far as we now know, none of these folks ever lived Pitt Township, Allegheny Co., PA. We know there was an Isaac POWEL who lived in proximity to Vincent COLVIN, whose daughter married a William POWEL back in the early days of Washington County. We know that in 1790, all the POWELL folks listed above were in Allegheny County. We can account for Joseph and possibly John. We know that in 1790, Joseph POWELL lived between Widow STILLEY and Jacob BEAM, his brother-in-law.

On 13 December 1793, Captain William Faulkner of Washington, commander of infantry company in Gen. Anthony Wayne's 3d Sub-Legion, requested, but was not granted, leave to take care of "bisness" at home. Margaret Faulkner, reportedly his wife, advertised property for sale in August 1793, and several properties were sold in the fall of that year with Margaret signing a grantee and Absalom Baird signing for William Faulkner as attorney-in-fact. Specific factors leading to request for leave are unknown, but financial, marital, illness, other pressures may have been involved. Margaret M. Faulkner remains mystery woman -- record of marriage or remarriage, common law arrangement, death, abandonment? Would appreciate any references to these Faulkners that members may run across in old family correspondence, media, or other sources. Bill Stokes
