Plenty of names and descriptions of battles. More articles to come over the next several days. Thanks to Lynn B for transcribing these. Note: these names are not indexed. You will have to read each article. You may want to have some tissue ready as your read some of the accounts. Others will just make you smile. All will make you proud of your roots. ALSO- we have linked to a similar death index project taking place in Sussex, NJ. This can be searched by surname. Check it all out at http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~paallent/index.html The World War I articles have their own page- The Sussex, NJ is a link to take you to JoAnn's pages. She is working with the NJ coordinator to get her deaths online in a similar manner to what we have done in Allegheny Co. Thank you to all veterans. You done a country proud. annie

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: cbtsmoorhead1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.pennsylvania.counties.washington/3967.1.2.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Kim, I have charted out the Moreheads and found out the following, after looking at all of the information that I have, and charting it all in one chart: Thomas Morehead , Andrew Morehead, And one other brother, possibly Robert Morehead, were born in Donegal, Ireland, now Northern Ireland, and emigrated to America sometime around 1790, via the port of New York. They first settled in Pennsylvania, and later moved to Carroll County, Ohio, Thomas in Lee Township, and Andrew (via Brooke County Virginia) in the Brown Township portion of Minerva in Carroll County. Thomas Morehead married Mary Hill, the daughter of James and Nancy Hill, who are buried in the Moorehead Cemetery. Thomas and Mary had two sons: Abraham b. @ 1817 d. 18 June 1890, and Crawford b. 09 October 1825 d. 24 May 1871. Crawford's surname was spelled both Morehead and Moorehead in the records that I have found. Crawford's family consisted of: Wife: Nancy b. unknown d. about 1872 buried in Harlem Springs Cemetery beside Crawford Daughter: Sara Jane Morehead b. 11 June 1848 d. 3 January 1938 m. 29 March 1866 to James Alexander Lee Son: George F. Morehead b. @ 1850 d. 11 March 1852, buried in Moorehead Cemetery Abraham's family consisted of: 1st Wife: Martha Ralston b. @ 1822, d. 06 June 1860 m. 28 June 1841 in Brooke County, Virginia buried in Moorehead Cemetery 2nd Wife: Mary Ellen Beatty (Beaty) b. @ 1817 m. 12 May 1861 Abraham and Martha had the following children: Mary Morehead (Moorehead) b. @ 1842 d. 15 November 1854 Nancy Morehead (Moorehead) b. @ 1844 d. ???? Eleanor Morehead (Moorehead) b. @ 1846 d. 24 October 1849 Andrew Morehead (Moorehead) b. @ 1848 d. ???? Joseph Morehead (Moorehead) b. @ 1854 d. 7 June 1855 Millard F. Morehead (Moorehead) b. @ 1858 d. 12 March 1861 Anna Morehead (Moorehead) b. ???? d. ???? Mary, Eleanor, Joseph, and Millard are all buried in Moorehead Cemetery Abraham and Mary Ellen had the following children: Dilla R. Morehead (Moorehead) b. @ 1844 d. ???? Abraham Morehead (Moorehead) b. @ 1865 d. ???? This is your branch of the family tree. My branch of the family tree comes from Thomas's brother Andrew, who was listed in Ohio and Virginia as Andrew Morehead Senior. Andrew Morehead Junior was born in Brooke County, Virginia in 1803 or 1804, before Andrew Senior moved on to Minerva, Ohio. Thus we are distant cousins. Andrew's decendants were concentrated in Augusta and Brown Townships of Carroll County, and Paris Township in Stark County. The southern portion of Minerva is in Brown Township, the northwest portion of Minerva is in Stark County, and the northeeast portion of Minerva is in Columbiana County' West township, so I have had to check sources in all three counties. Also, there were several major epidemics that swept the country in the 1800's, any one of which may be why Abraham and Martha's children died so young. They included cholera, diphtheria, influenza, malaria, and smallpox. Carroll County's Lee Township was still very wooded at that time, and still is, so access to doctors and medicine then was probably limited. The Moorehead Cemetery is located high on a hill on private property which is now part of a complex known as Area 330, a motocross course. I do not know if the course comes near the cemetery, as I have not made contact with the owners to visit the cemetery, and there is a gate across the road leading to it. I had gotten a list from a kind lookup volunteer on the Morehead or Moorhead cemetery in Carroll co. OH a few years ago. I just didn't get the Thomas & wife Mary recorded in my gen files on the computer so will get them in there now. Martha Morehead d. June 6, 1860 at 37 yrs 7 m 9 days is I believe the Martha Ralston who married Abraham Morehead in Brooke county 28 June 1841 in Brooke county by J. Calloway. I believe I had found Abraham married after Martha died & he is buried in the Harlem Springs Cemetery in Carroll co. I believe he was listed there in 1870 census & poss married with the 2nd wife; Abraham Morehead, age 53, Mary E. age 44, Cind E. 6 & Abraham 5. in 1880 there is a Martha __? age 15 there. Martha is buried there in the Morehead cemetery with these young children, (how heart breaking to see such young kids listed who died so young) Listed as kids of A & M. Morehead; Eleanor d. Oct 24 1849 age 3 yrs 6 m. Mary d. Nov 15, 1854 age 12 yrs 1 m 2 days. Joseph d. June 7 1855, age 1 yr 3m 29 days Milard F. died 12 Mar 1864 12 yrs 6 m 6 days. 3 other children in 1850 & 1860 census Nancy b. abt 1844 age 6 in 1850 & 16 in 1860. Andrew b. abt 1848 also in 1850 & 1860 census Mary b abt 1856 in 1860 & 1870 census, Mary A. b. est 1857? married Hamilton R. Blazer on 6 Dec 1877 in Carroll Co. died 16 Nov. 1915. *(they had kids Zink Aug 1882, Grace Dec 1890, Martha 1903, Ethel Martha in 1881 d in 1931 & hattie in 1880.)* Thomas Moorehead & Polly Hill married Polly Hill on June 4, 1821 by Robert W. Laughlin, J.P. Samuel Moorhead & Sarah Holmes on Aug 27, 1824 by John Rea, Vd. M. Thomas died April 13, 1844 51 yrs 5 m. 28 days, Mary wife of Thomas; d. June 6, 1836 36 yrs, 6 m, 24 days. I think Mary is a nickname of Polly or vice/versa? on the Ohio gravestones.org site they listed there is also a George F. Moorehead, son of C & N Moorehead March 11, 1852, age 2 yrs 2 m, 27 days, ? will have to check for them in the census. On Findagrave.com they list them also. James Hill d. May 24, 1839, & Nancy Hill d. May 18, 1837 poss likely parents of Polly Morehead. Also have a listing in the Will Abstracts of wash Co. PA for Samuel Moorhead *Morehead* Moorehead, dated 18 Aug 1814, probated 1 Oct. 1814, Exec; William Berry, Patrick Forsyth. Bene Wife Elizabeth; Sons; John; James; Francis; William; David; Samuel; Robert; Dau; Elizabeth; Grandch; Samuel Moorhead (son of James) Mentions James McBurney, Esq Acct# M-60-1816. In the Three Springs cemtery near Weirton, Hancock co, there is a William Morehead d. Sept 28, 1842 * in the Hancock county cemetery book says he was 75 but that puts his birth year about 1767 & to old to marry Sarah Ralston of Brooke. another cemetery listing found on Ohio digitalshoebox website listed he was age 48 so birth year 1794. there is no Sarah Morehead listed in either cemetery listings so where did she go? Wife Sarah Ralston Morehead may have married a John Cozier in 1849 & listed with him in the census with a son William Morehead. So looking for more on them. OR there is a Sarah Morehead 74 yrs old b. ca 1806 in WVA & parents b. in VA in the 1880 census of Ritchie WV. living with Zelba Wade & wife Rebecca Wade. ? is another possibility. I know William & Sarah had a daughter Mary Morehead b. 8 Mar 1831 in VA married John A. Crayton on 1 Nov. 1849 & had 8 children 2 who died as infants, a daughter Mrs. Lillian Carr d. 1893, Mary died 9 Nov 1923 in Westerville, Franklin co OH at 92 yrs 8 m & 1 day buried at Otterbein Cemetery of that city.
