Hi Art, I can help you with the Joseph Hill family connected with the Plum Run Old Side Baptist Church. I've done extensive research on that family. For a start you can go to my website www.beallsvillecemetery.org. There are more Hills buried in Beallsville Cemetery than any other surname. Also under the link to other miscellaneous cemeteries of Washington County, you will find 4 other Hill family cemeteries documented (one in Steubenville, Ohio). All of these Hills are related and come from Hillsbourough County Down Ireland. You can contact me directly at djhday@gmail.com and I'll see if I can help sort some of this out. Debbie
Hello, I am, Raymond Popp, President of the Rostraver Twp Historical Society. Joseph Hill, Jr. came to Rostraver Twp in 1754 with his slave and erected a cabin on what is called Speers Run located on Route 201 about 5 miles from the Monongahela River at present day Belle Vernon, PA. Later in the year or 1755 the Indians chased him home to Maryland. After General Forbes liberated Fort Duquesne and changed the name to Fort Pitt Jr came back to Rostraver Twp with his father and family. Two tracts of land were patented one in 1795 and one in 1796. The names on the patent were Joseph Hill and no mention if the first was Jr. or Sr.; however, the 1776 property RTHS knows for a fact that it belonged to Sr. as one of his daughters (Mary Hill) married a Phillip Shepler who migrated from Virginia (now WV, Hardy Co.). They had 8 children namely, Molly3, John3, James3, Amy3, Dibby3, Elizabeth3, Nancy3. Peter Shepler married Mary Hammond b. 1743 died in Allegheny Co, PA. Mathias Shepler(Shipley) married Margaret Houseman and they had 8 children namely John3, Phillip3, Abraham 3, Isaac3, Jacob3, Mary 3, Margaret3, Catherine Shepler3. Are buried in the Fellsburg Cemetery. I was born and raised on the farm adjacent to the Mathias Shepler Property and about 2 miles from the Joseph Hill, Sr. property. RTHS has placed a stone monument with a Granite Marker designating the original location of the Joseph Hill, Jr. Cabin. The name Isaac may have come from the knowledge of Mary Hill's line. Joseph Hill, Sr. brought along his slaves as the documents at a land sale had the list of the names of the slaves. RTHS, regrettably did not at that time have sufficient funds to purchase the items and some person from Maryland or Virginia was the beneficiary. I hope this will help you in your search. I would be interested in what you find out about the HILL genealogy. Also it was thought that Joseph Hill, Jr. bought propery across the Mononghela River in Speers Borough, Washington Co. however, RTHS cannot find proof and perhaps it can tie in with your investigation. Sincerely, Raymond Popp: President. p.s. RTHS is in the process of leasing the Historic Old Fells Methodist Church located in the Village of Fellsburg, Rostraver,Twp, Westmoreland Co. with a Belle Vernon post office address.
Does anyone know who holds the records for the Presbyterian Church in Burgettstown? Years ago, a phone call to the church told me that they no longer held the old records, but the obvious place (Presbyterian Historical Society in Philadelphia) doesn't seem to have them either. Thanks Bonz
Dear At, I don't know much about the families you mention, but are your aware of any your HILLs and MILLERs ending up in Monroe or Tuscarawas Counties Ohio? I have a William Hill born about 1770/1780 in most likely PA. I don't know where he lived in PA but suspect SW Pennsylvania. He left PA around 1810 coming to Tuscarawas County, OH. His son, also named William Hill, moved to Monroe County OH in 1830 where one of his children married the daughter of Abraham LOPER and Elizabeth MILLER and another married the son of Isaac BOOTH and Mary MILLER. Mary and Elizabeth MILLER were the children of John MILLER and Mary Eckenrote. I don't know much more but thought I would throw this out there in case anything was familiar. Also, I am trying to determine their possible relationship to my David Miller of Fayette/Washington Co., Pa. (noted here c1780-1793) and Nelson/Marion Cos., Ky. (here by 1796 and died here 1848). Specifically: >Joseph Hill born 1727 in Md. reportedly was the son of Isaac Hill who came to US in 1724. In 1767, Joseph settled near Prosperity in Washington Co., Pa. In 1788, he obtained a warrant for 353 acres on Ten Mile Creek. In 1803, the Plum Run Old Side Baptist Church (COB) was founded at home of Joseph Hill (Jr.?). He reportedly was son of Henry Hill who apparently lived previously in Anne Arundel Co., Md. This Joseph Hill was in Mason Co., Ky. by 1790 and died there 1798. His sons Nathan and Thomas were also in Mason Co. My questions are: >To what extent are these various Joseph Hills related? >Did the connected Miller families migrate from Md. to Pa. to Ky. with these Hill families? >What other connections between the Hill and Miller families, especially in Md.? >Where was Joseph Isaac Hill located in Frederick Co., Md.? >Where was Isaac Hill in Md.? Great news in reference to getting better access to older Pennsylvania state birth and death certificates: Vital Records Bill SB-361 was unanimously passed by the Pennsylvania State General Assembly on December 6th and now goes to Governor Corbett's desk where he has 10 days to either sign or veto the bill. We cannot assume that he will sign it. Visits, phone calls, letters to his office are the most effective, but even a one paragraph email is better than nothing. Hearing from organizations and individuals (including out of state residents) could prove important in making sure Governor Corbett not only signs SB-361 into law but does all he can to see that the records are made available online. This is discussed in detail in the December 6th, 2011 article under The Latest News section of our website: http://users.rcn.com/timarg/PaHR-Access.htm (includes contact information and a sample letter for this bill to the Governor). As a reminder Vital Records Bill SB-361 is simple in that it just makes death certificates over 50 years old and birth certificates over 105 years old in Pennsylvania open records. It also requires the records be handed over to the Pennsylvania State Archives. This will cost the Commonwealth nothing to implement. Once the bill becomes law it would be then possible to have the records online. Without this change in the law the records will remain very restricted forever. Thank you for all your help.

Fellow Genealogists, As per "People for Better Pennsylvania Historical Records Access," SB-361 has one last important hurdle to pass before it becomes law, namely the signature of Governor Corbett. Here is what SB-361 would do: "make death certificates over 50 years old and birth certificates over 105 years old open records. It also transfers the certificates once they become open records to the Pennsylvania State Archives." This would make them available to be digitized and put online. Please contact Governor Corbett and express your support for this important bill. It would be awesome to even have an INDEX. We've all had the frustrastion of not being able to access/find records past 1905. http://users.rcn.com/timarg/PaHR-Access-ThisWeeksNews.htm#Nov%2017,%202011 Thanks, Bonnie Malmat Pennyslvania native, now living in Florida.
Looking for information on the Cemeteries in Marianna, Pa. Specifically the Russian Old Believers. Is their a listing on line of individuals buried and location of cemeteries.
Looking for POWEL/POWELL ancestors that might have died in Dickinson Township. Dickinson became Mifflin around 1789. What are the cemetery names that are known to have existed during that time period? TIA Mary Fran
My family is part ruthenian, but we are not Russian. It is an area in the Carpathian Mountains. Look it up on Wikipedia. it gives you more explanation. Virginianne@cox.net Virginia
