Within the next week, I need to find a traffic accident article OR an Obituary for: (Not sure of first name) SWORDEN (possibly her first name was Janice? She was a teacher at St. Hilary grade school for 1969-1970 school year -- BETWEEN SEPT 1969 and end of school year. Hope I'm right on the year. She was young...in her 20s. She married a SWORDEN who lived on West Wylie Avenue. It may have been her first year of teaching. The story I remember hearing was her car slid under a truck and was killed instantly. I tried to pull up the 1969 issues on Google but my computer isn't loading the full pages. Could anyone have a look and see if you can find anything? Thank you. Judy
No, actually, that's (b. 1810) Reverend Daniel Lane's *grandson*. Rev. Daniel Lane born 1810 was a minister at Ten Mile (German Baptist "Dunkark") Church of the Brethren at Marianna, PA, a church his father, John Lane SR, helped to build. Rev. Daniel stayed in South Strabane Twp. until his death. Daniel H. Lane (Dan Lane) was the *grandson*. Dan Lane caused one of the county most exciting events-- he staged his own "death". He killed a chicken, put blood on his saddle and hat, and left his saddled horse grazing on the National Pike about 4 miles outside of Washington, within 4 miles of his father's home (father Robert J. Lane). An alarm went out--they searched high & low for young man Dan. Then they looked for his 'dead body', even draining people's wells and digging on people's properties. UNFORTUNATELY, several neighbors became "suspects" in his "death", including Jack Zediker (who'd married a FLOWERS girl... e.g. a cousin to Dan). That ended up causing bad feelings between the two families--- a rift that stayed more than 100 years (sad face). In the meantime, young "Dan" had left his horse on the Pike, hiked across to the nearest milk station on the RR, jumped a train, and went to Manitoba, Canada, then down to California, where a few cousins had moved several years earlier. All this came to light when "Dan Lane" sent a cheeky Letter to the Editor stating his death had been "greatly exaggerated"==he was alive and well in California. i.e. he admitted to staging his "death" as a "joke". I don't know how his Dad and Mom, and the Zedikers, didn't just go "kill him" for his foolish prank! He caused a lot of grief, sorrow, and bad feelings. And we think today's young adults do dumb things--LOL ! If anyone sees the front page news about this, I already have the articles about the "disappearance" and "death" search. So I won't need them. I sure do appreciate any articles about LANE or FLOWERS in particular. Happy Winter Day Fellow Seekers, I am always looking for more information and or to "gather in" other relatives on the above mentioned line. The Hagerty folk start out in Fayette County, and the Geho line in Greene County. Karen, I have an Adam Geho, born 11 December 1805 in Columbus, Franklin, Ohio, died 04 May 1871 in Wayne, Greene, Pennsylvania. I show him in the 1860 census for Jackson, Greene, Pennsylvania. He married a Zibiah Garrison. A copy of her will and a letter follow. They were obtained via Ancestry.Wills: Zibiah GEHO 1898 (nee GARRISON): Wayne Twp, Greene Co, PA Contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by Karen Souhrada; Souhrada@bigfoot.com vol. 8, page 137, probate date 1898 No. 4596 February 12, 1889 Greene County, Pennsylvania Will of ZIBIAH [GARRISON] GEHO [widow of Adam GEHO II] Know all men by these presents that I ZIBIAH GEHO of Wayne Twp, Greene county, State of Pennsylvania being in poor health but of sound mind and memory do make this my last will and testament hereby revoking all others heretofore made by me. I will that all my just debts and funeral expenses and suitable tombstone be erected at my grave to be paid for out of my estate by my executor hereafter named. I will to my daughter ELIZABETH COLE, my little spinning wheel and reel and a pair of smoothing irons inherited from my mother and all my household goods except the Bureau, block (?) and Big Table. The aforesaid property to be kept in the house so long as she remains in it. I will that any hogs or grains (there is a side note to the will at this point, that states the words "or grain" inserted before signing) I may have at the time of my demise, to my son-in-law GEORGE COLE. All the remainder of my property I will to be equally divided between my now living children. [These would have been: WILLIAM GARRISON GEHO, 1837 - 1923; MISSOURI GEHO COLE 1841-1940; KEZIA GEHO YEAGER (? date of death); MARIA ABIGAIL COLE (? date of death); ELLEN (? date of death); ELIZABETH (mentioned herein). The children who predeceased her were: BENJAMIN GEHO 1839-1864; CHRISTINE ANN, 1828 - 1880; MARY M. 1832-1871; GEORGE L., 1833-1847; CHARLOTTE, 1850-1857. ] I appoint my friend Dr. T. T. WILLIAMS to be my executor of this my last will and testament. In testimony whereof I have subscribed my name and affixed my seal this 12th day of February A. D. 1889. Signed with her 'X' mark ZIBIAH GEHO Witnessed by: GEORGE B. HENDERSON & TRUMAN HENDERSON, of Greene county, who later appeared before LAFAYETTE NICHOLS, Register for the Probate of Wills, Greene county, PA, June 1898, to attest to the death of said testator ZIBIAH GEHO on May 9, 1898 at 5 o'clock p.m. Dear Marie: I have put off writing and giving you the account of Grandmother Geho's death hoping to get a chance to xerox it, but up to now haven't had the time. So I'll proceed to copy it off: Mrs. Zilah Geho, wife of Adam Geho, deceased, died May 9, 1898. On Saturday, May 6, her clothing caught fire from the open grate. There was no one in the room with her, and she, being too feeble to extinguish the fire, was severly burned before help came. Grandmother Geho was one of the oldest ladies in the county, being 91 years old. She was born at Catawissa, Columbia Co., Pa., May 1, 1807. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Garrison, who moved here from Catawissa to Washington Co., 1818. Mr. Garrison, who was a soldier in the Revolutionary War, lived to be 107 years old. He died in Greene County 1847. Mr. Adam Geho was born in Columbus, Ohio, 1804. He came to Washington Co., where he married Miss Zilah Garrison in 1828. In 1839 they moved to Greene County, locating in Jackson township. Mr. Geho died in 1871, and Mrs. Geho, as stated above, died May 9, 1898. She leaves six daughters and one son. Mrs. John Lough, Cameron, W.Va., Mrs. E. Cole of Hoover's Run, Mrs. David Yeager, Metz, W.Va., Mrs. Mary Minor, Mrs. James Cole, Hoover's Run, Mrs. George Cole, Bluff, and William Geho, Nettle Hill. Two daughters and two sons are dead, Mrs. Wm. Emory and Miss Charlotte, George died in infancy. Benjamin , who was a soldier in the Civil War, was killed during a campaign in Virginia. William was also a soldier in the Civil War. Grandmother was a member of the Prosbeterian church, and always had a kind and pleasant word for all. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. W. Woodruff, at Mt. Zion Church. Rev. Woodruff spoke from the 17th. verse of Revelation. In connection with the above, there is a poem written by G. Cole, concerning Grandmother Geho's death, but I'll wait until I get a chance to xerox it, so they will be together. In connection with the Cole Reunion, I counted up that out of all the Grandchildren Grampa Cole had, there are still 7 Grand-daughters and 2 grandsons still living. Hermon, who was Uncle Berts only child, and myself are the 2 gransons. 2 of Uncle Dick's daughters are still living; 3 of uncle Simon's 4 daughters are still living, so far as I know. Ruth died about a year and a half ago. I doubt if we will ever hear of the other three. Vanie and Ruth, of course, are still around. There are very few of the older Cole's who attend the reunion, and many of them are in-laws, and no longer bear the Cole name. We never attended until about 5 years ago, when someone urged us to go, and we found it was worth while. Let me know if you want any other information. I moght not know any more about it, but maybe could find out. Your Cousin, Lyndon C. Roach Washington, Pa., 15301 It rained in Waynesburg today. List, An interesting article published in the Wash Reporter Newspaper, April 23, 1895, page 1, col 2, link below. An Ancient Firepiece. There is on display in Hunt's jewelry store window a very ancient gun, if tradition is anyways reliable. It is the property of William Hilling of No. 50 Winona street, who prizes it very highly as an heirloom. It was traded by an Indian to _______ Jennings, who settled on Jennings' run in Menallen township. It is said the Indian received it from the tribe of John Smith of Pocahontas fame. Mr. Jennings traded it to Mr. Hilling, the great great-grandfather of the present owner. It was an original flintlock, long range rifle, which had been changed to a cap lock. This gun is perhaps the oldest shooting iron in Fayette county, and is well preserved for its age. The owner says it shoots with extreme accuracy yet and is practically as good as ever. Seeking help in sorting out various Ludwig Millers in early York Co., Pa. area to see if any of them are connected to Ludwig Miller who died 1813 in Fayette Co., Pa. 1) First there was Johan Ludwig Solomon Miller born 1715 reportedly a German from Palatinate. He had a 1752 warrant for 275 acres in Manheim Twp.--he sold this land in 1774. Could he be the Solomon Miller on the ship Samuel that arrived at Phila. 8/17/1733? His son, John Solomon, married Eva Marie Hiller 1764 at St. Matthews Lutheran Church in Hanover and is reported to have lived and died 1807 in Milford Twp., Somerset Co., Pa. This Ludwig is reported to have died 1779 in Washington Co., Pa. Some questions: where did he live before York Co.? did he have connections with anyone in northern Md.? was he connected to the Ludwig Miller who died 1813 in German Twp. of Fayette Co., Pa. (this Ludwig had a son named Solomon)? Where in Washington Co., Pa. did he live and die? 2) There was a Ludwig, Jacob and Nicholas Miller on 1779 tax list in Germany Twp. now in Adams Co. His will was probated in 1783 wherein he named wife Anna Barbara and children of Anna, Nicholas, Ludwig and Barbara. In 1798 another Ludwig Miller died in Germany Twp.--perhaps this was the older Ludwig's son? Does anyone see any connections to Johan Ludwig Solomon Miller of Manheim Twp.? 3)There was perhaps another Ludwig Miller that shows on 1779 tax list in Mont Joy Twp. in now Adams Co. Also listed was Henry Myers. They are there thru 1782/3. Both Ludwig Miller and Henry Myers appear on 1783 tax lists in Manellen Twp. of Fayette Co., Pa. Anyone know if these are the same people? The timing fits. Any connections to the other Ludwig Millers in York Co.? 4)Yet another Ludwig Miller was in Frederick Co., Md. In 1762, Daniel Leatherman and Anthony Hardman witnessed the naturalization of Ludwig Miller of German Baptist Church of Frederick Co. Daniel and Anthony were pastors of COB churches in Middletown Valley. Could this Ludwig Miller be the same person as one of the other three noted? Would appreciate any insight into this matter. Thank you for posting this Carole. At first glance I see my ancestor John Leet Dye here and other family names that are likely linked. This date of 1895 may help fill some gaps where the 1890 census would be missing.Judy ************************************** Judy Lesso, Pittsburgh, PA Email:jlesso@hotmail.com ************************************* > Date: Fri, 6 Jan 2012 08:59:13 -0800 > From: searchingpa12@yahoo.com > To: PAWASHIN-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: [PAWASHIN] Property Valuation - Triennial Assessment for the County > > List, > > This is the first time I've seen this in the Wash Reporter Newspaper and I've been reading them from the first edition up through this one. List, This is the first time I've seen this in the Wash Reporter Newspaper and I've been reading them from the first edition up through this one. It's a partial list of property owners and value of property. I'm assuming the balance of the county will be reported in future editions. She was really mistreated there. She told horror stories abt that place. She told us of a young black girl that was taken into a room and beaten to death. Grandma said that when they (those in charge) carried the young black girl out, she and the other inmates had to clean the blood that dripped from the girls lifeless body. My grandmother was said to be incouragable. She was only like 6yrs old. She was put out to work and was raped by the people that took her in. To put it mildly, Morganza was Hell. I called to see if I could get info abt the children that were there. I was informed that all the papers from Morganza was burnt in a fire. I still feel that was convenient. You can look up on line and find stories about that place. The movie "Silence of the Lamb" used Morganza in the movie. They needed a place that was dark & scarry. There is info out there on this place. None of it is good. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. List, Morganza is mentioned all the time in the old Wash Reporter Newspapers. Something interesting that was mentioned once in the papers is the fact that they said the majority of the kids there were because of step-parents! The point they made was that the parent had remarried (i.e., normally because of death as there were few divorces) and the step-parent did not want the child at home.
