COOK Samuel H. COOK died at his home on the South Side, McDonald, on Monday morning at 4:00, in the eighty-seventh year of his age. Mr. COOK had been in his usual health until about two weeks ago when he suffered a paralytic stroke. Mr. COOK was one of the best-known men in this section of the country. His father, John COOK, was born in Chambersburg, but when ten years of age, came with his parents to Cecil Township, this County. Samuel H. COOK, son of John COOK, was born and reared on the COOK Farm in Cecil Township, about three miles south of McDonald, and received his education in the common schools. In 1868 (1858?) he moved to McDonald. For many years Mr. COOK was in the furniture and undertaking business, retiring several years ago. Mr. COOK was three times married. His first wife was Miss Rebecca DONALDSON, to whom he was married in the year 1857. She died a year later. In 1861 he was married to Mary A. GILFILLEN of Allegheny County. She died in 1884. In the year 1892, Mr. COOK married Miss Amanda SMITH of Pittsburgh. She and a daughter, Mrs. Joseph MCCLAY of Mt. Lebanon survive. One granddaughter, Miss Mary SCHAFFER and two grandsons, Samuel Cook MCCLAY and David MCCLAY, of Mt. Lebanon also survive, as well as a half-brother, Mr. Nathan COOK of West Lincoln Avenue, McDonald. Mr. COOK was an ardent church worker and for a long time was an elder in the First United Presbyterian church here. Soon after the Robinson Run United Presbyterian church was located here, Mr. COOK withdrew his letter and united with it. He was also greatly interested in the war and done (sic) all in his power to help. He took up knitting and had just finished the eleventh sweater. He first knitted an ambulance cover, and notwithstanding his almost four score and seven years. Funeral services were held at the late home on Wednesday afternoon at three o'clock, in charge of the Rev. *. C. MCCOWEN, pastor of the St. Clair Presbyterian church of Mt. Lebanon, an old friend of the family assisted by Rev. J. H DEBOT pastor of the Methodist church, McDonald, Pa. Interment was in Robinson Run cemetery.
The two boys pictured above are two of our boys fighting for Uncle Sam somewhere in France. Ellsworth MITCHELL is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel MITCHELL of Railroad street. He is a brother of the late Jennings MITCHELL who gave up his life while rescuing men at the Aetna Chemical explosion at Oakdale, May 18, 1918. Jules MONGOLD is a son of Mrs. Eugene CHIEZE of Barr street. He was decorated with a war cross for bravery in the Chateau Thierry sector early in June. Both boys are only nineteen years old. They enlisted in July of 1917 and were assigned to Co. I., M. G. B., 7th Regiment Infantry, then at Gettysburg. They spent the winter at Camp Greene, Charlotte, S. C., and were sent overseas early this spring, and are now doing their share. Sergeant MITCHELL received his appointment since arriving in France.
LENCHUCK, GAMBLE, SMITH The lifeless body of a man believed to be Clem LENCHUCK was found frozen Sunday morning at the edge of the ball-field, just west of the borough line. The body was found by John SHIMEK and was taken to HUMPHRIES mortuary. In a pocket of the man's coat was a registration card bearing the name Clem LENCHUCK, age 26, and the number 157. There was also a pay envelope of the Heidelberg steel works dated November 30. For two weeks past the man had been working at the Jumbo mine and lived by himself in a shack at Jumbo. It is supposed that he fell over the bank, distance of eight or ten feet, the roads being very slippery Saturday night and was unable to get back to the road. Joseph GAMBLE died at the Canonsburg hospital, Saturday morning, January 12, 1918, where he went one week before because of heart trouble, from which he had suffered for some time. Mr. GAMBLE was born on what was long known as the GAMBLE farm, south of McDonald, February 14, 1843. Since the death of his wife six years ago, Mr. GAMBLE has made his home with his sister, Mrs. Joseph HOLMES, at Canonsburg. Mr. GAMBLE was one of the oldest and most highly respected citizens of this community all the yeas he lived near McDonald. He was a life-long member of Robinson's Run church and was faithful in his attendance. The funeral services were conducted in the church by pastor, the Rev. J. B. CAVITT. Interment was in the family lot in Robinson's Run cemetery. Funeral services for Mrs. Elizabeth SMITH, who died at her home in Valley street, Thursday evening, will be held at the late home Sunday afternoon, at 2 o'clock, in charge of the pastor, J. H. DEBOLT. Further particulars of the deceased will appear in next week's issue.

Hi Jerry, Some of the things you mentioned are some of my concerns. Without proof, how will we ever know. DNA won't help me as I come from one of her sons. The only daughter that I've been able to trace didn't have any children. Just a short note for those of you with this family legend of Indian blood. I have been researching for almost 20 years and have found 2 claims of Indian blood in family lore and how these stories can mutate and evolve. It has became fashionable after the 1900s to claim Indian blood lines, however before that one was considered Mulatto. During the 1700s -1860s the term mulatto represented a American Indian child, it was not used to represent mixed ancestry, the definition changed after the United States 1868 14th amendment to mestizo. So if you find this notation in your census records you may have a valid claim. In the 1900s, if you had high cheek bones and the right complexion, then you must have had Indian blood. My 1st wife managed to get a scholarship based her Indian heritage based on Shawnee Tribe records, which gave her tribal membership. I have however found out through my own research that this was all bogus. Just because a person with the same name married an Indian does not mean it was your ancestor. The second occurrence was my current wife's grandfather, who claimed Indian descent. He had the facial features to support the claim and it had become family legend. He actually is of German blood and his maternal line is English. Another legend bites the dust. In researching my current wife's fathers line, I did verify her linage to John Rolfe and Pocahontas, which was totally unexpected. Her father Chief Powhatan was commonly referred to as King Powhatan, which I guess would make Pocahontas a Princess. Proving your Indian heritage can be done through DNA testing which can test for the Native American genes. Take care, Jerry Wear

I would like to invite the Washington County List to take a short (8 question) survey about my websites. As always, additional comments are welcome. If interested, please go here http://freepages.religions.rootsweb.com/~florian/survey_sept_2007.htm The survey will be online for just a few weeks. The questions are self-explanatory. Note that one of the questions will ask you to open 2 example pages in addition to the first page I listed above -- but the survey questions will be shown on all 3 pages. Please ONLY reply to the email address given, and do NOT reply to this List please since the survey is only to help me. (The Listers don't need their mailboxes cluttered up.) It would help if you put SURVEY in the subject line. Thanks! is Chestnut Ridge Cemetery the old Kings Creek Cemetery? I notice that Chestnut Ridge Cem. is on Kings Creek Rd. And in working with the deaths from 1852-1854 that I have a few burials in Kings Creek Cemetery - are they one and same? Ruth
