    1. [PAWASHIN] Annexation of Laurel Hill Nov. 23, 1928 McDonald PA Record
    2. Victoria Hospodar Valentine
    3. McDonald Annexes Laurel Hill The McDonald borough council met in special session Monday night and passed in due form the ordinance annexing to the borough the part of South Fayette township known as Laurel hill. This takes in the populated section bounded by the creek on the north, by the county line on the west, and the Laurel hill school property on the east. The creek is the boundary line which divides North Fayette township from South Fayette township. The SINSEL ice plant is in North Fayette township, and remains out of the borough, but the SCHRIEBER greenhouse property, just east of SINSEL's, is included in the annexation. A portion of Cecil township, between the present borough line and Laurel hill, remains out of the borough. It was stated in council that the property owners of more than 90 percent of the territory comprised had signed the petition for annexation. The principal reason assigned for desiring to come into the borough is the school advantages. Five of the seven councilmen were present Monday night, the absentees being Messrs. LYONS and CAMERON. Dr. D. E. ORWIG was in the chair. The various motions for annexation were made by Messrs. MCGREEVY, MCCARTNEY and SMITH. Mr. VOYE abstained from moving or seconding, stating that he was leaving the direct action to the older members of council, as he was not sufficiently familiar with the question at issue, and had not fully decided in his own mind what is for the best interest of the borough. He concluded by saying that he wanted to do anything that is for the betterment of McDonald. Secretary CAMPBELL reported that all members of council had been notified of the special meeting, each having received personal service. Burgess LAROSS approved the ordinance.

    3. I don't know if non-AOL subscribers can access this, but it was interesting to see. http://money.aol.com/forbes/general/most-expensive-cemeteries As genealogists, we're always dismayed that some of our ancestors have no headstone / marker. On a more personal level, have you talked to your family about your own wishes for a tombstone? Do they know if it is important to you? Do they know what size and type of stone you prefer? More importantly, engraving COSTS. Every letter in a name adds to the price. Does your family know if "Sue Smith" is Okay to use? or that you prefer that your full name is used, like "Susan Kay Smith"? or that you do / do not want your maiden name on your stone? Do you know you CAN add more than names and dates to a stone? (again, every letter costs money). I recently paid off my sister & brother-in-law's stone. I put their main "occupation" on the stone-- above my sister's name is "Genealogist" and above my brother-in-law's name is "Trucker." Below each of their legal names in full are their "nicknames" ("Katy Lou" and "Bud" in quotes on the stone). I think it'll add something to a future researcher's info. :-) So, don't forget to talk tombstones with your family when you discuss your "Funeral Planning." Judy

    3. Ice For Purity In the winter, in the summer, and in between times, the McDonald Ice Company, owned and operated by H. E. SINSEL, supplies the distributors who bring to your door this sanitary necessity and economic comfort--because "a cake of ice never gets out of order." This plant, housed in a modern brick building, with "up-to-the-minute" mechanical equipment, absolutely the newest and best available, and real "spotless town" in all its appointments, is a most important factor in McDonald. Cold blocks of crystal gleaming purity is the product, and "Service that excels" is the slogan of the McDonald Ice Co. Mrs. Hubert S. SINSEL with years of experience in this product started the plant in McDonald on May 10, 1927. And its success from the opening day proved their product the "finest and purest." They supply distributors, who serve an amazing territory--Imperial, Oakdale, Midway, Burgettstown, Cecil, Canonsburg, Hickory, and other communities enjoy this "Purest Ice--Made in McDonald"--which the distributors deliver to homes so promptly and efficiently. Mr. SINSEL is an enthusiast on McDonald and his "hobby" is "ice." He is capably assisted in the office management by Mrs. SINSEL, who is equally interested and enthusiastic in the "purity and quality" of their product.

    3. A Pioneer A "big spoke" in the McDonald business circles is the J. Kerr MCCARTY Company, Inc., who supply Lumber and Builders' Supplies to contractors and home builders for miles around. Tracing lumber back to the big timberlands, where for generations past Old Mother Nature has been preparing materials for building, they know the quality of the lumber they supply to their patrons. Wisdom figures the cost of construction more and more "by years of service" rather than the immediate job. And when you buy lumber form a house that is "lumber wise" you have lumber "at its best." A real factor is the "Curtis Millwork," which gives the finest results for interior finish, and the Planing Mill is a great source of accommodation in preparing lumber for immediate use. All builders' supplies recommended by this firm you will find have been tested for durability and service. The J. Kerr MCCARTY Company, Inc., has a special interest for Who's Who" readers. Since the inception of this successful business, started by Mr. J. T. MCCARTY in 1895, it has been owned, operated and associated with the MCCARTY heirs. All through these years the high standard of the founder has been carried on. The officers of the company are J. Kerr MCCARTY, president; J. Z. MASQUELIER, secretary and treasurer; and the directors are Ralph DUCRAY and R. M. MCCARTY, and they are always glad to support any project effecting the welfare of McDonald and striving to give a perfection of service to this community. 3. I wouldn't mind knowing something about the Clutters too. I note I have three separate Clutter's marrying into lines of interest in the Washington Co., PA area but no connection among the three lines. One marriage was to an IAMS, one a PENN who was the grand daughter of an IAMS (there are also BANEs in her tree) and one to a SWART woman. And the timing is about what you're talking too; mid 19th century. BTW, your name seems familiar. Have we exchanged e-mail before? I know that Ascenah Walton married Philip Leonard Swart in 1818 and Philip was the son of Jacob Swart and Sarah Evans, a sister of my 4ggrandfather Washington Evans. This was all in Amwell Twp., Washington Co., PA. Is this where your Waltons are from?
