    3. STIFFLEY, CLAPPERTON, WOLCOTT, MILLER, CRANE, CARTER, BELL, LUPPEN, CAMPBELL Mrs. Jessie STIFFLEY, sister-in-law of Mrs. Alex. JOHNS, of this place, died at Webster, Pa., March 9, aged 36 years, 4 months and 2 days. Survived by three children, Willie, Pearl and Daisy. Mr. STIFFLEY died in McDonald about eight years ago. David CLAPPERTON, Jr., aged 3 months, son of David CLAPPERTON, Superintendent of Shaw mines, died Tuesday morning at the home of his parents in Midway. Funeral services were conducted from the home Thursday by Rev. GIBSON. Interment at Robinson Run Cemetery. On Sunday at 1:30, Mrs. Anna E. WOLCOTT, mother of William S. WOLCOTT, formerly of McDonald. Mrs. WOLCOTT was 76 years of age and was born in Dover, Delaware. For 25 years she was a resident of Petrolia, Pa., but for some years has made her home with her son in East End, Pittsburg. Julius P. MILLER, aged 70 years, one of the oldest attorneys of Washington and a lifelong resident, died Monday afternoon at his residence on Lincoln and Wheeling streets. He was born in Hopewell Township May 22, 1839. He was a son of Matthew and Mary MILLER, who were also born in this county and lived here all their lives. James CRANE, a well known electrician residing at Rosslyn, was killed Saturday morning at Rosslyn station by a fast west-bound train on the Panhandle. He was hurrying to catch the Carnegie express into Pittsburg where he was employed. Mr. CRANE was aged about 40 years and is survived by his wife. He was formerly a resident of McDonald and installed here the plant of the Electric Light and Power Company. On Monday at a Pittsburg hospital, Mard CARTER of Burgettstown, aged 27 years. Funeral services were conducted from the Baptist church in McDonald by Rev. SALLIE Tuesday evening. Mr. CARTER's death was very sudden. He was in his usual health up to Saturday but was taken to the hospital Sunday night and death ensued early Monday morning from a rare form of Bright's disease called sugar diabetes. He was a member of the Colored Odd Fellows' Lodge and of the First Baptist church of McDonald. Mrs. Anna P. BELL, wife of William BELL, aged 27 years, 9 months and 4 days, died at her home at Patton coal works, Saltsburg, Tuesday March 3, at 12:30 o'clock, of spinal meningitis. She is survived by her husband and three children. Mrs. BELL's maiden name was JOHNS and was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alex. JOHNS of this place. Four brothers and two sisters also survive: Charles, Roy and Harvey of this place, and Edward of Saltsburg; Mrs. Henry KLINGENSMITH and Bertha of Leechburg. Mr. and Mrs. BELL were former residents of this place. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. INSKEEP of the M. E. church of Saltsburg, and interment was made in Edgewood cemetery. On Friday evening last shortly after nine o'clock the body of Miss Leona LUPPEN of McDonald was found on the railroad track just beyond Primrose. Deputy Coroner HUMPHRIES was summoned and the body was brought to the mortuary on Outlook street. Coroner HEFFRAN conducted an inquest on Monday at 11 o'clock and the jury after hearing the evidence were convinced that the cause of death was deliberate suicide. The evidence showed that Miss LUPPEN had been despondent for some time; had frequently declared that she would put an end to her life and on that evening she gave the key of her trunk to her roommate, Miss WILLIAMS, and told her to do what she pleased with it. She came down the hotel stairs crying at about 7:15 and started toward the railroad. Mrs. SHAFFER of the hotel called her to inquire what was the matter but she went on without answering. She was last seen alive at the depot at about 7:30 when she started up the track alone, walking on the ties between the rails. No trains were passing at this time and she evidently had walked on until she came to a coal train below the Primrose mine where an engine was making up its load on the south track. None of the train men saw her, but the body was still warm when found and no other train had passed over that track. Mead CAMPBELL of Moon Run, formerly of Champion, died at a Pittsburg hospital Tuesday evening. Mr. CAMPBELL was a cousin of John LONGSTRETH and William COUSINS of Sturgeon. *Sturgeon column

    2. Victoria Hospodar Valentine
    3. For the violation of the mining laws in not having danger boards placed, Saul PECK, pit boss of Cherry Valley mine No. 3 of the Pittsburg and Erie Coal Company, was arrested Saturday and given a hearing before Squire COCHRAN of McDonald. He was held for court on the charge. The prosecution was made by the miners' union. It is alleged that since the opening of the No. 3 mine PECK sent in thirty-seven men before a mine inspector had ever been in the mine and also before danger boards had been placed throughout the mine. It is alleged that the lives of the thirty-seven miners were endangered by going into this mine before the inspectors had made an examination and before the danger boards had been placed.

    3. Yes Judy I will snail mail a copy. Will mail it tomorrow. FOR THOSE THAT FOUND AN ANCESTOR in that list and would like a copy of the discharge info: I found Obadiahs by accident while researching the deeds for hubbys line of Sprowls. So you would need to go to the Washington County Court house and go to the deeds office and locate the volume of microfilm that you need. At the time, the only copy I could obtain was by using their map reader and I think it cost me $2.50 and printed out on large 17" x 24" (est.) Ruth

    3. Ruth, Could you shoot a copy of the O-R pdf to me via email (or even snail mail)? O-R site lets 6 pages "come in" on my computer and stops (probably my broadband is messing up). By the way, I tried looking up the article where the O-R used this source, but it's now on fee-service. 3. THE DATES ARE NOT THE DATES OF DISCHARGE FROM THE MILITARY SERVICE - I am looking over the copy I have of a discharge notice for Obadiah Sprowls. What I have is a photo copy of records that the clerk hand wrote into the record log. *The top left entry is dated November 20th, 1893, and is for a indenture . *The bottom left entry is UNITED STATES TO OBADIAH SPROWLS - it is NOT dated Nov. 1893, but iT records Obadiahs discharge for July 15th, 1865. *The top right of page is discharge for George Kiehl (who is listed directly below Obadiah in the discharge list from the Observer-Reporter). It also is not dated 1893, but is UNITED STATES TO GEORGE KIEHL discharge info. (May 24, 1865 -if copy needed let me know.) *The bottom right, directly below George Kiehl info, is an indenture dated November 1893. SO FOLKS - just from what I have in my hands, I would say that the dates are the recorded date. NOW - if we look at the column heading for the dates on the 10 pages, it DOES say DATE OF RECORD and VOL. and PAGE. (Obadiah's discharge info is on page 192, and that is what the listing also says.) So, to me this solves the mystery. But am glad the problem arose, as I noticed info in the pension papers of Obadiah that I had "overlooked" in my excitement of receiving them in May 2004 !!! Ruth

    3. I cannot help but notice that several "Certificate[s] of Discharge" occur in this Grantor/Grantee Index, as well as various officer commissions, certificates of service, etc. I also see that there are several bankruptcies filed. I now fully understand the grantor/grantee situation with the churches, which are listed first, thanks to Judy and Ruth, but I am stumped as to the registration of what I feel are military discharges of some kind. As a civil war enthusiast, I notice that the names of the men listed are Civil War vets from Washington County. What a mystery! Thank you for your assistance and information. I hope that we can get to the bottom of this! Cindy McWreath Slovan, PA

Henry served in the Civil War out of Washington County (muster in, September 1862 - March 1864 muster out), and he died 8/28/1920. Has anyone tracked down a record yet? Fun stuff!!! 3. I printed out the 10 pages and have been looking them over. In the listing of Grantee Names from the Grantor of the United States, I located my husbands gr gr grandfather, Obadiah Sprowls. The date of record in the list was 1893. I know that Obadiah died in 1898 and I have his pension file. I looked thru the stack of pension papers and nothing is dated for 1893. UNLESS, someone mistook 1898 for 1893. But, I doubt that since there are many names with the date of 1893. Looking at the dates, the names are not in alpha order, but in order by date. With the column headings of Grantor and Grantee, they must be for deeds of land, correct? What does the term Discharge mean? Is this different than Certificate of Discharge? I "think" that the listings starting with United States is military service info, that has only been listed after deed info. (?) I re-read the deeds I have for Obadiah and found nothing relating to 1893. And his discharge paper states that it was July 1865 that he was discharged near Alexandria VA. I would be interested in someones expertise as to just what these discharge papers are for exactly. Ruth Sprowls

    3. On Sunday, February 28, Dr. Theodore NOSS, Principal of the Southwestern State Normal at California, died at Chicago. Dr. NOSS was recognized as on of the foremost educators in the state of Pennsylvania. His death was due to pneumonia, the malady having been contracted on the train while en route from California to Chicago last week, On Friday evening, February 19, Dr. and Mrs. NOSS, accompanied by Dr. H. B. DAVIS, of the normal training school, left for Chicago to attend an educational meeting and look over the schools of Chicago. Dr. NOSS was in a serious condition when he arrived in the western metropolis and on advice of physicians was at once taken to a hotel. He was found to be suffering from pneumonia. Bulletins received daily from the bedside indicated that Dr. NOSS was not in a dangerous condition. Last Friday he took a sudden turn for the worse and declined rapidly. The remains arrived in California Monday and memorial services were conducted in the Normal chapel Tuesday forenoon. Tuesday afternoon interment was made in the cemetery at Monongahela City. Mr. NOSS was a graduate of the Shippensburg Normal school and the Syracuse university. Over 25 years ago he was elected principal of the Normal and had since held that position. He was 56 years of age, his entire life having been devoted to the cause of education. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church and was active in church work. His wife, Mrs. Mary GRAHAM NOSS, is a teacher in the California Normal. 3. Hi, These are NOT church records. The PDF shows 10 pages of a Grantee-Grantor Index. Anytime you see those words, it has to do with the SALE and PURCHASE of LAND (not just for churches, but anyone in the county).. Churches had deeds throughout the 1800s. But often, churches or trustees had few actual deeds for *the time* of the actual buy-- or had not taken them to the court house to be recorded. In early 1900, churches had to Incorporate. So, very often in Grantee-Grantor Indices, you will see the *first* evidence of a RECORDED deed AFTER 1900--- even though the church was built, say, in 1805. Or the land was "bought" or given in 1795. By Trus on this record-PDF means By the Trustees of the Church making the deed. If you see your ancestor in the Trustee list, you've gotten a piece of history-- there may not be Church Minutes that list Trustees and when those positions "changed hands." Also researchers need to know that the name of a church *MAY* have changed from the original time the land was bought or given.... and the Incorporation is a totally different or altered church name. This is because (1) some church denominations were "loose" with their "formal names" in early years OR (2) the "headquarters" of th denomination voted on a nationwide name change. ALSO, be aware that the Incorporation Name used on Deeds or Incorporation Papers -- or on deeds alone-- may differ from what "locals" called the name, from how cemetery-readers recorded the name, or from how you've always heard the church called. I'm not sure on the ones marked United States "to" (an individual) why those are marked "discharge." Maybe it has to do with finalization of the sale?
