It Will Be a Warm Valley When Mr. RANK Gets to Work on it with His Steam Pipes--The Greatest Electric Valley in America. The ordinances introduced in Oakdale this week, and passed in McDonald, giving Mr. H. W. RANK the privilege of laying not only electric lines, but steam conduits, in both towns, must mean that Mr. RANK is getting ready to sell public heart, through steam pipes to private houses. We have not seen Mr. RANK, but we know he is a man of original ideas, and this supplying of heat to private consumers from a central plant is the latest thing suggested. It will be thus in a year or two that the Oakdale or McDonald resident arising a morning like this will look at his thermometer and take a telephone--"Hello, give me H. W. RANK--Is that RANK?--Say my temperature is only 65 here now and we can't get up till it's 72--Hurry up that temperature." This is surely the most luxurious valley in all the world, and one, probably, that uses more electricity than any like population. In addition to the Citizens' Electric L. H. & P. Co of McDonald which at present furnished both towns, Mr. RANK is asking admission to general electric privileges at both ends of the valley, ad at Tuesday evening's Council meeting in McDonald the McDonald Electric Light, Heat & Power Co., a new corporation headed by D. L. WILLIAMS, B. FRANKLE and W. H. YOUNG, also asked for the privileges of the towns. The valley is full of electricity. In addition to the street car line, we have half a dozen mining plants along the four miles that will each use on an average as much as the trolley company. Oakdale Mines and Chalfant Mine will each use five or six times as much electric power as the car company. Electric cookers, for families are coming too, and the coming Robinson Valley will be more electrified than any place has ever heretofore been.

I have found a lot of info on Thomas Campbell and his religious achievements but very little on his sons (other than Alexander). The oldest ancestor that I have found was Robert James Campbell who according to his obit, was born in 1826 in New Geneva, PA (Fayette County) to Thomas Campbell and Jemima Turney Campbell. His father "Thomas" died in 1834 and the widow Jemima Campbell moved the family to Guernsey County Ohio. Several sources hint at a connection to Thomas Campbell: Robert's daughter Mary's obit says she was a great niece of Alexander Campbell A bio of Robert's son J.R. says that his grandfather "was a finely educated man who was for nearly thirty years president of a college." A newspaper article that claimed that Robert was in possession of a book belonging to "his grandfather" and "it is inscribed by the owner, Thomas Campbell, dated February 20, 1816." And yet when I try to research the genealogy of Thomas and Alexander Campbell, I find very little information and NO plausible link. Thomas had a son named Thomas that might be the father of Robert Campbell but the family trees I have seen show that he did not have a son named Robert or a wife named Jemima. So no link. Am I looking at the wrong family tree? Can anyone help me figure out for sure that Robert was or was not a grandson of Thomas and a nephew of Alexander? All suggestions welcome! Ellsworth is located near Bentleyville and Beallsville, so I would look in those communities. But it would probably be easier to you to find out where he is buried by obtaining his death certificate, which includes information about the disposition of the body (burial or cremation, cemetery, funeral home). Your father's birth certificate would not have been issued by a church in 1917; that has been the responsibility of the state government since 1906 and the certificate should still be on file with the Pennsylvania Department of Health. Perhaps it was a baptism or christening record that was lost in the church fire? Good luck with your search. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I remember being told by him and my mother that his birth certificate was destroyed in a church fire. I am assuming that this church would have been located in Ellsworth. I was wondering if anyone has any information as to the name of this church. Additionally, from my aunts and uncles I was told that one of his brothers died during childhood in Ellsworth. I am assuming that if this church had a cemetery that would be where he is buried. I would like to be able to find out not only the name of the church but also if there is/was a cemetery on the grounds. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. <The cost for making is $3.50 per thousand for the medium grades and more for the higher priced,> If 1,000 stogies cost $3.50 to make - I wonder what the cost to purchase just 1 was? Sounds like a good profit. (I miss the smell of stogies, as my dad used to smoke the little black ones he called Italian stogies. hmmm this has brought back some memories - dad smoked pipe, stogies, cigars, chewed tobacco; I am told his mother (a farm girl from WV, whose parents were Scottish immigrants) chewed tobacco and smoked a corn cob pipe - I have an old corn cob pipe, don't know if it was dads or grandmas.) Thanks for the trip down memory lane on this Thanksgiving holiday. Dad passed away on Thanksgiving Day in 1981. Ruth

Reports of the Internal Revenue Officer, D. B. HEINER, show that the stogie factory of B. M. MCCARTNEY has made and sold 1,337,400 stogies in the current year. He has used 15,364 pounds of tobacco and has paid a revenue for the same of $4,012.20. The cost for making is $3.50 per thousand for the medium grades and more for the higher priced, so that the wages paid easily reach $5,000 per year. Lately they are running at $126 per week. He has paid for leaf tobacco within the year $2,558.24. A factory that pays $5,000 per year in wages is worth while, and, with apologies to Mr. MCCARTNEY whose modesty is well known, it can be said that the success of this flourishing business id due to the enterprise and rustling proclivities of its proprietor, and the quality of the goods he manufactures. A MCCARTNEY Stogie is known throughout the surrounding towns to be made of the best stock that can be furnished for the price and the demand for them will shortly require a larger factory. A clean, lasting stogie made of pure first quality tobacco leaf is a luxury to those who have formed the execrable habit, and, that they are made here a little nearer to perfection than anywhere else in the Pittsburg district, is the opinion of an increasing number of smokers.

Ruth, Since the copy is public record copied from a Court Docket Book, I don't need O-R's permission. That's why I asked for a copy from you -- so I can post them. O-R's pdfs change frequently as they update their sources, so by posting them to my web, they'd stay available for everyone. And, it'd be in smaller chunks so it'd be easier to view. Boy am I sick today. Going back to bed. Judy On 11/20/07, Ruth Sprowls <sprowls@ncweb.com> wrote: > > Dee, who are you looking for?
