    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: rdgibbs Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.pennsylvania.counties.washington/1891.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: This is what I know about Nancy: Probably about 1823 (another estimation that comes from the 1824 birth date of their first child) Isaac RICHARDSON was married to Nancy WILLIAMS, daughter of Joseph and Sara (WILLIAMS) WILLIAMS. The DAR records of Wanda (KIRKBRIDE) FARR, National #207562, and those of Cora (RICHARDSON) SPRIGGS, National #73578, give Nancy's year of birth as 1809. In the 1850 Brooke County, Virginia federal census enumerated in August she gave her age as 41. If she had been born in 1809 she would have married at about the age of fourteen and become a mother at fifteen. Her son William said that she was born in West Virginia in the 1880 census, and in the same census Belinda said she was born in Ohio. Samuel gave Pennsylvania as the birthplace of his mother in the 1880, 1890, 1900 and1910 censuses and in 1880 Mary Jane agreed that her mother was born in Pennsylvania. Joseph, however, gave Nancy's birthplace as Virginia in the 1880 census. Elizabeth consistently said that her mother's ! birthplace was Pennsylvania in the 1880, 1900 and 1910 censuses. Nancy gave her own birthplace as Ohio in the 1850 census when she was living alone with her minor children as noted above. The marriage records of Brooke County on page 10 read: "This certifies that the rites of matrimony between the following persons were duly solemnized by me: John Miller & Nancy Richardson on 7th March 1852. . . [signed] H. Snyder." From the Wellsburg Weekly Herald of 19 March 18526 came the following: "Marriages . . . On the 7th inst., by the same {Rev. B. Snyder] Maj. JNO MILLER, to Mrs. NANCY RICHARDSON, both of Wellsburg, Va." In the Wellsburg Weekly Herald of 29 December 18547 reads: "Survivors . . . of the War of 1812 met . . . in Wellsburg at the Court House on Saturday the 23rd day of Dec. 1854." Maj. John MILLER was one of four appointed as delegates to the convention of the soldiers of the War of 1812 to meet in Washington on 8 January 1855. The Wellsburg Weekly Herald ! announced MILLER's candidacy for Commissioner of the Revenue i! n the Ma y 1856 election8. In the 1860 federal census for Wellsburg, Brooke County, Virginia John MILLER, aged 70, house carpenter, was enumerated with his wife Nancy MILLER, 52, and her children Sarah A. RICHARDSON, 19, and Elizabeth P. RICHARDSON, 14. Nancy probably died before the 20 July 1870 Wellsburg federal census10 when John MILLER, 83, retired carpenter, was living in the home of Amelia CARLE, 67, widow. There were no known children of Nancy (WILLIAMS) (RICHARDSON) MILLER's second marriage. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [PAWASHIN] A difficult topic to bring up
    2. Judy Florian
    3. I'm not sure where to begin this but I guess I'll just jump in. Most of you know I am straight-forward in what I say, and that sometimes, I point out truths regarding difficult subjects. This subject is awkward to bring up. But I feel I HAVE to speak out-- for myself, other webmaster, and more importantly, for all the researchers out there. As most of you also know, there are many webmasters who have websites devoted to Washington Co PA. Each of us may have a different focus, but we are all trying our best to serve our County------Washington County. I think we all do our best to accept submissions and are grateful to those who take the time to gather, copy, type, or scan information that we don't personally have--and we enjoy making the records available to others. It is hard work and takes time, but for many of us it has become a second job in our lives. Now, as most genealogy hounds know, even Message Boards are split along catgeories of surnames or locations. It's done that way because it is the most logical way for users to research. If my family was in Lancaster County, I wouldn't start in Bedford Co. PA-- unless I had reason to suspect they were there early enough before Bedford Co was split into more and more counties. For the same reasons, researchers of a Washington Co family would start looking *first* in Washington County---not Fayette, Allegheny, or Greene. Only when researchers know or suspect cross-over (or are desperately casting a wide net for hard to locate persons) would they look in neighboring counties. So back to my discussion of websites for our county. It surprises me that folks are submitting cemetery lists to the Allegheny County website. It makes me wonder why I and the rest of the webmasters for our county are bothering to do this work at all?? I could understand if all the cemeteries submitted are "close" to Allegheny... but some are not even near the county border with Allegheny (or any other county). I could even understand if one website had major differences in presentation or layout, or the focus of the website. For example, there are Photo ID websites for identified and unidentified persons. Some webs may have developed great ways to present large amounts of photo-jpgs such as the Fayette County tombstone project. I can even understand when people choose to upload massive numbers of photo files to specific county Message Boards, since RW has massive space to handle and display these files. But, when Website A presents files in text and/or photo and Website B displays it the same way, why then aren't those submissions made to the county to which the info pertains? Even Vicki on our list separates her submissions according to primary location and sends as appropriate to ONE List. It just makes sense to do this. When Vicki sees cross-over, she cross-posts to both (or several) county Lists. Just makes sense. My comments have nothing to do with not supporting other webs or webmasters of other Counties. I make a point to send info I have for another county TO that county webmaster to post on THEIR web. If the info has an overlap (such as some of the marriage notices Sandy has sent), I have chosen to keep those on my site because (A) there is overlap, a bride from Washington Co & a groom from Allegheny and (B) more importantly, they belong to a "collection" Sandy created from McDonald PA papers. Sometimes I post misc. things I find in newspapers just because I don't always have time to track down who is the webmaster for X county in Z state, find their email, and send it off. BUT if I had a cemetery list for say, Washington Co MARYLAND, I'd be quick as silver to send that record to the appropriate county website. I just do not understand why people with Washington County roots do not support Washington County websites by placing their submissions there???? Honestly, it makes me wonder why I'm bothering to do this work??? And it's very discouraging, I must admit, because I'm devoted and passionate about having as much Washington County info online for FREE searches. This is not a territorial dispute, but instead, a question of LOGIC. If it doesn't matter WHERE we put this stuff on the web, then maybe every webmaster should randomly copy and send parts of their web info to a different county to post on the "other" county --- and let Internet users figure out for themselves which county to search in for those records!! If you have records to submit, please consider how and WHERE people will search for the records. If the graveyard was on the Allegheny-Washington border, Washington-Greene border, or Washington-Fayette border, at least consider submitting to websites for BOTH counties. If you still want to put Washington Co PA info into another county's web, then please, don't complain when you (quote) "cannot find the records for ____! or "you don't have MY family of ___ from (town or year)" (quote*) on one of the many Washington County webs that I and a number of other persons maintain. Respectfully but discouraged with this "issue", Judy Florian * The quotes I made above are taken from many emails I get complaining that I don't have this or that cemetery, or records, or certain families on my web. Gee... if I HAD it to put on the web, I would do it ! P.S. I will add links on my website to the Washington Cemeteries that are on the Allegheny County website. 1. [PAWASHIN] Question for Ancestry newspaper users
    2. Judy Florian
    3. Has anyone had problems with Ancestry "results" pages lately? Specifically, are the first 5 links on a results page for a newspaper "clickable"-- do the links open? or does it not even try --as though the link is not properly written so it doesn't even try to open the window? Also, for link # 6 , does the page open--BUT you find many, MANY highlighted unrelated words and phrases on ONE page instead of the words you requested to find? (Normally, there may be 1 or 2 "mistakes" in highlights, but what I'm getting is sections in almost every column.) Could someone try the following and let me know what happens? Go to The Charleroi Mail (Charleroi, Pennsylvania) On the keyword box, type in "church fire" Try the first 5 links-- see if they open anything at all. Try link # 6 which should be > 1938 > September > 28 of that paper. Is text highlighted everywhere through it, including in an article about women not being allowed in the foreign service? If your experience is like mine---first 5 links unclickable--would you please go to HELP/Suport and SEND an EMAIL to technical reporting that links are broken--- give them the URL of the results page and the words you searched for. Technically, I emptied temp files; pop-ups are accepted; I turned off Norton AV... nothing helps. I'm scratching my head on this one.... Thanks for your suggestion. I have numerous sources for Robert Campbell (1826-1897) that say he was born in PA. His obit (Cambridge Jeffersonian) says that he was born to Thomas and Jemima (Turney) Campbell in New Geneva, PA. Another article states that Robert's grandfather was the famous Thomas Campbell of Bethany, VA, Washington & Fayette Counties, PA and Cambridge, OH). Wesley Campbell sent me a reference from the J. V. Thompson manuscripts that mentions a Robert and Jemima Campbell and lists three children, one of which is MY Robert Campbell. So that "unofficial source" contradicts the obit that lists Robert's father as Thomas. So I don't have a clear cut link to the Campbells of Bethany, VA. I contacted the Campbell Historical Mansion in Bethany and spoke to the Genealogist there who couldn't tell me one way or another if my Robert Campbell is related to the Virginia Campbells. There isn't a lot of genealogy information on the children of Thomas Campbel! l other than his famous son Alexander. Thomas also had 2 other sons, one named Thomas but the information on him is sketchy. One tree on Ancestry.com has Thomas listed as a son but not much on his descendants. Another shows no son named Robert. So that is what I have. I have run out of sources and need suggestions. THANKS to EHatfield4556. I will be checking the source listed. Open to all suggestions! 2. Judy Florian
    3. Inmate was used on Census, Tax, and in official Registers to indicate persons who were in jail, in a county long term home, in a mental hospital or a public or private home designated for the poor, indigent, mentally or physically incapicitated. Children could thus also be "inmates" and also some children's homes used inmate even without any defect-- except having no other place to care for them.
