As I locate articles for families I am researching I print out many articles regarding families in Washington County. I try to post as many as possible but am now at a point where I must stop posting and get back to my data entry into my tree. I will gladly mail these articles to a DEDICATED volunteer who will be sure to post them. I realize we are all busy, but I would feel very badly if I mailed these articles and failed to see them appear on the list. So please only contact me if you truly have the time to committ to this. With Christmas almost upon us, I will collect what I have and mail after the holidays. PLEASE CONTACT ME OFFLIST at sprowls@ncweb.com -Please do NOT post a response onto the Washington message list. If you are only available for a short period of time, is ok - as someone else may be able to pick up where you leave off. THANKS IN ADVANCE - Ruth Sprowls

Ruth got me on a quest tonight to find some of my Wallers. As an addition to my first long post, I found this: Siblings, children of Judd and Martha McClelland Waller were: Miss Annie M. Waller born 1851 (different than Anna Mary Stathers Waller) Mrs. Nannie Waller Crouch* Richmond, married to Thomas Richmond, [I found them in the census -- born 1869] Thomas Waller [different than Thomas McClelland Waller] Mrs. Mary Waller Clemons - I know nothing on her Mrs. Elizabeth Waller Johnson - I know nothing on her one Thomas, listed as single, lived 1870 in Thomas and Nannie Richmond's home- listed as bro-in-lw.... Annie M., listed as single, same- listed as sister-in-law *"NANNIE C. RICHMOND - *Mrs. Nannie C. Richmond, 91, of 284 North Franklin street, died at 3 a. m., Monday, Dec. 12, 1960, in Washington Hospital. She was born in Maple Creek, Sept. 7, 1869, a daughter of Judd and Martha McClelland Waller. ......<snipped> I still don't know why she had the Crouch name... 1st marriage? or named at birth Nannie Crouch Waller? == Sooooo here is my Tuesday challenge, open to anyone willing to take on this possibly impossible endeavor (LOL): WHERE is Judd and Martha McClelland Waller in the US Census---for ANY year??? ANY state ANY county. I tried to look in the entire SW PA area. I don't know if Judd was the guy's real name? Maybe it was his middle name?? (maybe like Thomas Judd---we got tons on Thomases in this family.) Martha McClelland Waller had a child in 1851-- Annie M. Waller . So Martha b. ca. 1818 to 1831 depending on whether Annie was the first child or not. Nannie Waller Crouch Richmond was a cousin of Flora Wynona Waller Lane, who was Ruth Lane McGary's mother (Ruth was my grma). We have not perfectly figured out just how Nannie was a cousin though [since we cannot seem to fit Judd Waller into any known family of Wallers] I cannot find anyone who fits. Maybe my cough-sneeze-headache-fever has made me blind-LOL Can you find Judd and Martha McClelland Waller and their kids? Challenge Details Include--- Time Limit of Challenge: NONE Births of Judd and Martha - UNKNOWN Location of Judd and Martha - UNKNOWN Limitations on locations to search: NONE Accuracy Counts: accuracy is best, but I'll take clues too Forever Indebted to you if you find Judd McClelland: Yes Prizes: Kisses, hugs, Cheers, and public Kudos If you find the parents of Judd whatever-his-name Waller OR parents of Martha McClelland, the "prizes" are doubled! So sick my eyes are drooping as I type this. I'm going to bed. Judy
Good Day, All: In the Washington PA Observer-Reporter Newspaper, Monday, December 3, can be found the obituary of Mr. Glenn L. “Bub” Hughes. I have known Mr. Hughes and all of his family for 35 years. I am saddened that the originator of the obit unfortunately provided faulty, serious errors and omissions. Because I have known him so long, I can identify errors in this obit. My connections to him arose because I raised his granddaughter, Debbie Jo Hughes, as my own daughter from the time she was 4 years old. I’ll explain in more detail below (*) We researchers know that obit errors are a serious matter. I do not have the influence to see that a second, corrected obit will be printed, though I hope that one does appear. Even if it does, some researchers may never know to look for it. Mr. Hughes’s lineage can be traced to Greene County. He was a resident of Washington County for about the past 55 years. Find below the corrections (most in BOLD type) necessary for anyone interested in this family. THANKS!! _________________________________________________________________________ 1.) Glenn Hughes’ parents are Clyde Roseberry Hughes (1902-1961) and Thelma Rinehart Hughes (1903-1978). This couple is buried in the Washington PA Cemetary. The Hughes and Rinehart families can be easily traced as residents of Greene County, PA. 2.) Glenn Hughes first married Norma Jean Schoenberger (1926-1998) on June 2, 1946. She was the daughter of George Clinton Schoenberger and Helen May Hughes (1900-1977) who are also Greene County folks. Norma Schoenberger Hughes is the mother of Glenn Hughes’ 2 sons. Why her name does not appear is a mystery. 3.) Glenn and Norma’s 2nd son is named Charles William Hughes, but he is known as Bill Hughes. Bill Hughes 1st married Sonya Jean Sinclair. They bore Debbie Jo Hughes (*) in 1973, but they divorced in 1977. I married Sonya in 1978 taking Debbie as my daughter to raise in my household. Debbie is the granddaughter of Glenn’s mentioned in the obit named as Debbie Jo. 4.) But, Debbie Jo Hughes (1973-) married Dale L. Crouse (1960-), please note the correct spelling of her married surname appears here. Debbie and Dale bore Glenn’s 2 greatgranddaughters. They should be listed in the obit as Elizabeth Crouse (2001-) and Emma Crouse (2004-). 5.) Glenn Hughes died in Amwell Twp., Washington County, PA at the home he shared with his 2nd wife in the rural Amity, PA area. The obit may lead the reader to believe that his death occurred in his former home in Washington, PA. Glenn Hughes moved from his Washington, PA home to the Amity-Amwell rural home when he married for the 2nd time in 2004. Ruth, I've been searching my files for Grandma's letters and the partial book she & I had been working on before her death. I found a few things -- and also copied what I have in our unpublished book. I hope this isn't too confusing... First I have PEES family (also spelled PEAS, PEASE, PEES, PEESE) ......and I have WALLER family. (once in a while spelled Weller]. PEES and WALLER intermarried many times-- in the same generation and in different generations. In the Pees family, many generations with names George and Andrew... and Mary. In the Waller family, many generations with names Andrew... and Mary. A Mr. Teagarden wrote about the PEES ancestry, but he stopped on my line after JUST naming where the WALLER line entered. So what I have typed below compared information to Teagarden's book. Teagarden was updating a book on the PEES family by John W. Anthony, so Teagarden himself was comparing his work to John Anthony's book. Teagarden used very confusing numbering for persons and families. There was an Andrew [B.] Waller [Sr.] who married Mary PEES. Their son was Andrew B. (who often went by A.B. Waller] and he was married to Sarah "Sade" Thompson-- that's where Thompson comes in (I forgot about her). A.B. Jr. was a postmaster at Lover PA. So, here is a bit of what we had and a few things from grandma's letters. Note: This is the work of Ruth Lane McGary and Judith A. Florian. *The Waller Family* *This is the family of Mary Pees, probably the eighth child of George Pees [b. 1770 - 1849] and Lydia Vaughn Pees. [Anthony p. 9-11; Teagarden, p. 15, __ ].* 8. Mary Pees 1807 1878 *NOTE:* See the family of Andrew Pees [b. 1763*- -*died ca. end of 1843-1844] and either Mary Engle Pees # 1 or Andrew Pees and Mary ______ Pees # 2. [Anthony, pp. 9, 11, 16-17; Teagarden, pp. 13, 153.] *VERY IMPORTANT* *NOTE:* Nicholas Pees designated as # 124, son of Andrew Pees, in Teagarden p. 13 [for whom he gives no family] has same birth and death years as the Nicholas Pees designated as 137, son of George and Lydia Vaughn Pees, in Teagarden p. 116-117. He also lists Mary Pees as number 125, as daughter of Andrew on p. 13, with the same birth and death years as Mary Pees as number 138, as daughter of George Pees and Lydia Vaughn. It seems *highly* unlikely that 2 sons of Zachariah Pees [b. 1713 d. 1818], namely Andrew and George, would have children with the exact same names who both were born in the same year and who died in the same year, namely Nicholas Pees [1806-1877] and Mary Pees [1807-1877]. However, in the Will of Andrew Pees, he lists a daughter "Mary, now Mary Waller" and in the Will of George Pees, he lists a daughter "Mary Waller." This Nicholas and this Mary both marry into the Waller family, which is our family. Since this writer cannot figure out the correct father of either Nicholas or Mary, these two children will be listed under both: as children of Andrew and again as children of George [Andrew and George being brothers]. The better way would obviously be more research, but this writer's physical condition prevents her from pursuing any courthouse research at this time. We would like to present the research we do have, with the clear understanding that these 2 children at present are presented with two different fathers. See Andrew Pees's section for the introduction of the family of Mary Pees Waller and Andrew Waller. A more complete description of their family will be presented later. Teagarden p. 15, 153 * * *This is the family of Andrew and Mary Pees Waller. * * * Andrew Waller 1805 Aug. 10, 1896 Mary Pees 1807 1878 Married unknown date Children: 1. Mary Martha Murphy is not listed in *PEES: A Brief History of the Descendants of Nicholas and Hannah Pees*, by John W. Anthony, M. A., 1931, p. 17. Teagarden, Manhattan, Kansas, Sept. 1979, p. 153. John W. Anthony's book has dates only on Mary Pees Waller, Andrew Waller, Lacy Waller Murphy and Franklin B. She personally knew many of these people but never asked as a child "just exactly how are you related?" Here were her questions: *Here is what Ruth Lane McGary wrote to Judith Florian [letter postmarked Feb. 18, 1998] about the Wallers and various questions for research*: "Judd Waller and Martha McClelland Waller are the parents of Nannie Richmond. Ok. Nannie and my mother are cousins. But Judd Waller does not fit into any of the known (to me) family. Elizabeth Waller married Nicholas Pees. Who are the parents of Elizabeth Waller Pees? Who are the siblings of Elizabeth Waller Pees? I hang them on every branch of our family tree [but] I come up with another 'I do not know'. Andrew Waller and Mary Pees have three *known** children* - 1. Lacy Waller I know married a Murphy.* I knew about her and possibly knew her. 2. Andrew Waller, Jr. married Sarah Thompson. I think her nickname was 'Sade' in the picture from Nancy Strickland. [NOTE: Mrs. Strickland's mother was a friend of the Waller family. Mrs. Strickland gave Ruth Lane McGary some Waller pictures which Mrs. Strickland's mother had kept.] [Grandma doesn't name the third child here, who was Thomas McClelland Waller .] Could Judd Waller, Elizabeth Waller and Andrew Waller be related to each other? ... Interesting - Andrew, son of John Pees, probably, married Sarah _____ and their daughter, Sarah A. married Mr. Judson McClelland. Also had one son not named. So, we find Judd Waller, Judson McClelland, Thomas McClelland Waller [Mrs. McGary's grandfather], and William McClelland, a cousin whose mother was a Waller, and my mother's sister [Flora Wynona Waller Lane's sister]. Did it just happen that way? See p. 8 *Pees* by John W. Anthony. [Ed. Note: This is one reason for the question of was Nannie Richmond's middle name *maybe* 'Crouch' since we have so many in this family who carry family names as middle names.] Check out any of the Wallers I have named. Especially the family of Andrew Waller, Jr. He lived at Lover near Charleroi. Lacy Murphy's family lived in Roscoe. The daughter of Andrew Waller Jr. and Sarah Thompson (Sade) married Stanley Powers. Her name is Bertie Waller Powers.* ... All these families were from Centerville and Brownsville areas and my mother's family in Beallsville..." [Rest of letter omitted.] ========== So I have looked for Judd or Judson Waller - nothing. I know McClellan / McClelland family and Waller were related but do not know HOW. My direct line includes Thomas McClelland Waller. ** *===* *In the 1850 United States Federal Census > Pennsylvania > Washington > Somerset, page 6 of 36 at www.ancestry.com* line 5 #37--37 Andrew Waller age 39 male Mill wright 3,750 PA line 6 Mary [Pees] age 41 line 7 Lacy age 12 line 8 Andrew age 3 line 9 Thomas age 2 line 10 William age 28 Carpenter line 11 George age 24 Farmer line 12 Mary age 30 [how are the adults listed above related to Andrew B. Searching is hard with so many duplicate names. Any ideas about Judd Waller? Or any of these people? If Ruth or anyone can locate additional obits, news articles, etc. on any of these people, I'd appreciate a copy. Sorry if this is confusing. I was trying to reconcile Teagarden's book with Anthony's book--and with my own research. The only dates I can safely rely on are from my grandma because she wrote to / knew at least 1 or more people in each of these famlies. Judy * * ** **

I'm looking through my grandmother's notes to find out what she had about Bertie and Lacy. I'm almost positive she had that Lacy Waller was a child of A.B. Waller, so I need to look this over more. This means I have Carson info on my own web who belong maybe in my Pees-Waller-Lane history. Pittsburgh, Mar. 3.---In the news of a few days ago there appeared a meager line saying that the Pittsburgh miners' convention had voted to erect a memorial to the memory of Patrick DOLAN. A life-story with a world of human achievement and pathos reached its culmination in this act of the miners. It was belated justice being done to "Pat" DOLAN by the miners to whom he gave his life. It work is a pitiful commentary that the vindication carried with this act could not have come to cheer the last sad days of DOLAN's life. The resolution, passed unanimously by the miner's convention, provided for the erection of a suitable memorial to the memory of Patrick DOLAN "in view of his valuable and splendid services rendered to the mine workers of this district and of the entire country in blazing the way through the wilderness of unorganized miners, and his untiring efforts and self-sacrifice." The chapter in DOLAN's career which wrought his undoing as their leader was therein forgiven if not forgotten. It was an accident arising in the inter-state wage negotiations in 1906 at Indianapolis. It had been generally conceded that the existing scale of wages was to be renewed. Trade conditions were actually worse than when that scale had been established three years before. When the operators' ultimatum for renewal was before the joint conference DOLAN voted for acceptance. The miners' leaders from the other states rejected the proposition and the inter-state conference broke up. Some time later the Pittsburgh Coal company management, looking to trade advantage, led for a small wage advance. All other operating interests stood out against it and strikes started throughout the bituminous coal fields. Some of the strikes were quickly terminated, but in Ohio and some other fields they dragged throughout the summer, bringing many concerns to the point of bankruptcy. But this was DOLAN's alleged wrong to his people, which ambitious opponents seized upon as the instrument to thrust him from office. While he maintained his standing in his one union he was kept out of district and international conventionals largely through his enemies' fear that in his aggressiveness he would "come back" in very truth. The unjust stigma of all this broke "Pat" DOLAN's heart. But now the hearts of miners have gone out to him anew.

My Ralston ancestories were born there, their parents were from Northern Ireland (Ulster Scots). We do not know their names, but I have 3 names of their children. John (b. either 1806, 1808, or 1813; GGGGrandpa); married a Sarah; lived in Monroe Co, OH til 1840; then Harrison Co, OH then finally Guernsey Co, OH William (b. 1818); married Margaret Walker in 1845; lived in Harrison Co, OH 1846-1853 and buried 1st family in Harrison Co, OH then moved to Guernsey Co, OH Nancy (b. 1810); married Peter Lawrence (b. 1803 Hopewell Twp, Washington Co, PA), moved to Washingtong Co, OH about 1830 then to Guernsey Co, OH about 1840's === I have strong suspicions to believe that Robert Ralston who lived in Hopewell Twp of Washington Co, PA during 1810 & 1820 Census is the person I am looking for. I do not know where he died, therefore I am unable to locate a Will for him. He had 10 or 11 children though and did live in Monroe Co, OH for a time. His wife's name was Elizabeth on the land deed I found there. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
