    3. If your folks were in Washington County when Allegheny was created and you have records on them from Allegheny 1790 to death in Beaver County, where would you go to try and backtrack them before Washington County? Can this be done without professional assistance? The WCHS has no records on them before 1790. All opinions useful and appreciated. 3. DOUGHERTY, DHINAUT, DEWALD, HOPKINS, DEFRANCE Mrs. Eliza DOUGHERTY, aged 70 years, widow of George DOUGHERTY, died Sunday evening, May 11, at 7 o'clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Charles RODGERS, at Laurel Hill. Death was due to hear trouble from which she had been suffering for some time. Mrs. DOUGHERTY was born in Ireland. She was a member of St. Alphonsus' Church. The death of her husband occurred about eight years ago. One son, George DOUGHERTY of Sturgeon, survives. Two daughters who reside in Corning, Ohio, survive besides Mrs. RODGERS. The funeral was held Wednesday morning at 9:30 in St. Alphonsus Church. Interment in the Noblestown cemetery. Mary, the two-months-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. DHINAUT of Sturgeon, died at 3 o'clock Friday afternoon, May 9. Besides the parents one sister survives. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the home. Jacob DEWALD, a German farmer, aged 51 years, living in Reissing, committed suicide about 3 o'clock last Friday morning. It is supposed that he set fire to the barn and then hung himself from the hay mow. The wife awoke shortly after three o'clock Friday morning and when she discovered that her husband had risen she got up to look about the house for him. Her attention was attracted by the burning barn. By the time she had made her way from the house the flames had gained such headway that nothing could be done to save it. DEWALD's charred body was found in the ruins. It was so badly burned that it could hardly be recognized. Two cows and a quantity of grain and farm implements were also destroyed. The wife survives with one daughter, Miss Mary, at home, and a son, Henry DEWALD, in Illinois. The funeral services were held at the home Sunday afternoon at two o'clock in charge of the Rev. W. D. IRONS. Interment in Robinson's Run cemetery. Mrs. Benjamin FEREDAY received word Monday morning from Pittsburgh of the death of her sister, Mrs. Charles HOPKINS, who resided on the South Side. Mrs. HOPKINS was aged about 45 years. She is survived by her husband. Mrs. FEREDAY is the only living member of the family. Mrs. Martha EWING DEFRANCE, aged seventy-nine years, died Monday morning at her home in Candor. Her first husband was Joseph ROBINSON and her second marriage was to John DEFRANCE of Centerville, Iowa. She belonged to an old pioneer family of this locality and spent her long life here, excepting the thirteen years spent in Iowa, during the lifetime of Mr. DEFRANCE. She was a faithful member of the Raccoon Presbyterian Church, being vice president of the Women's Missionary Society for twenty-one years and never missing a meeting of the society in that time. Funeral services were held in the church on Wednesday morning, conducted by her pastor, Dr. G. M. KERR. Interment in Raccoon cemetery. *Martha Jane DEFRANCE, from an Executor's Notice of 5-30-13.

    3. THOMPSON, BISSIERE, KELLY, MCEWEN, REED, ATEN, MCCONNELL, MARSHALL, FARRAR, ROMAIN Robert V. THOMPSON, aged 75 years, died at two o'clock Tuesday morning, April 22, at his home near Sturgeon. He had been in failing health for several months. Mr. THOMPSON was born in Zanesville, Ohio. As a boy he went West, where he remained until the outbreak of the Civil War when he enlisted in the 51st Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He served throughout the war. Following the close of the war he was employed for a short time on the railroad. In 1868 he was united in marriage with Susanna MCEWEN. At the time of his marriage he settled on the farm where his death occurred. He was a member of the G. A. R. Besides his wife Mr. THOMPSON leaves two children, Robert J. THOMPSON and Mrs. W. J. COUSINS, both of Sturgeon. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at the home by the Rev. J. B. CAVITT and the Rev. Dr. W. D. IRONS. Interment in the Robinson's Run cemetery. Noel BISSIERE, 67 years old, died at his home at Monessen, Pa., on Tuesday, April 22, at 10:30 p.m. Mr. BISSIERE had been a resident of McDonald for twenty-five years prior to this removal to Monessen fifteen years ago. He is survived by his wife and seven grown children--five sons and two daughters. Mrs. LETOUR, who makes her home with T. W. CHALMERS in Valley street, is a sister. The funeral services will be held in the Catholic Church at Monessen on Saturday at 3 p.m. Interment will be made in the cemetery at Belle Vernon. Joseph KELLY, the three-months-old son of Mr. and Mrs. James KELLY of Noblestown, died Tuesday morning. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon. Interment in the Noblestown cemetery. In the death of Mr. William J. MCEWEN our community has sustained a sever loss. His enterprise and public spirit commended him to all who aspired to the best in life. His integrity and courage were no less conspicuous than his intelligence and kindness. He was a man among men; his convictions of duty were clear and deep. Ever loyal to his high ideals and true in his friendships, he aimed to realize his responsibilities in the home, the church and society. It is most fitting, therefore, that we, the directors of the Robinson Run cemetery, should publicly express our high regard for the personal worth and devotion of Mr. MCEWEN. We knew and honored him for his untiring zeal in promoting the best interest of the cemetery. It was his one ambition to make a place where our dead might lie amid the charm and quiet beauty of nature. No task was too great, no labor too arduous if it promised better things for the resting place of those who have gone beyond. Most generously did he give his time and strength to planning for greater improvements. He coveted the choicest methods by which we might render a proper return to the lot owners for their money invested. Most humbly submitting to a gracious Providence we desire to offer this tribute to the noble zeal and unstinted devotion of our townsman, Mr. MCEWEN. The community is richer and human life better because he lived. We rejoice in the goodness and earnestness that characterized his life and deeds. Grateful for his service, blessed by his example, we deeply sympathize with his family in their bereavement, and ever pray that we may profit by every worthy life lived among us. 3. Linda, That must have been an old, old posting you saw. Anyway, one good source for reprints of old history books is located at the following site: http://www.higginsonbooks.com/ I might have an original copy around somewhere that I could sell you but it would be a lot more expensive and I don't know how long it would take me to dig it out of the mess I call my library. An original can cost from $150.00 to $400.00 depending on condition etc. You also might find a copy on CD that is less expensive than a reprint from Higginson but I personally don't like them as I find them hard to use. Best place to find CD's is on ebay. I find nothing easier to use than good old paper. With over 2000 genealogy related books I can never put my hands on what I want. Some of my books elude me for years. Then I can't remember why I wanted to find it. The book that I was referencing was "The History of Morris County......." by Edmund D. Halsey and originally published in 1882. Other histories for Morris County include: "A History of Morris County.... 1710-1913" ed. by Henry C. Pitney and published by the Lewis Hist. Pub. Co., in 1914(2 vols.) and; "Northwestern New Jersey: a History of Somerset, Morris, Hunterdon, Warren and Sussex Counties...." ed. by A. Van Doran Honeyman and published by the Lewis Hist. Pub. Co., in 1927 (4 vols.) and; "BIOGRAPHICAL & GENEALOGICAL HISTORY OF MORRIS COUNTY" 2 volumes, 803p. (Lewis Hist. Pub. Co.; 1899). Anyway, just tell Richard at Higginson that I sent you and have a Merry Christmas. Jack W. 3. That's really sad Ellen. Especially if it was "lifted" on purpose. Do you use a sign-in book with name, address? Any way to write to the recent visitors? On another note .... as a reminder too for everyone... As family members die, it is so tempting to throw out their papers and possessions. But what is "junk" to family today may be realized as "priceless" tomorrow. Your families may not have expensive objects--- but, oh, the worth of "love letters" and other correspondence.... items saved from babyhood... boxes of dusty file folders that might have original documents. No matter what--- take time to look at each item. I tried to stop my bro-in-law from burning my sister's stuff (he's in a different State)--- now, 4 yrs later, they ask "where is ___" or "I wish we had ___". And I say back to him.... "You did have all of that---you BURNED it." He even burned the grandkids' original birth certs and griped when he had to 1. pay for them and 2. drive to get them because he needed them immediately. What they did still puts knots in my stomach. 3. Dear Listers, I am writing this to each of the lists I am on because I have found something that has happened rather distressing & want to alert those who may volunteer in other research facilities or go to them for help in the future. Over about the last 3 months or so we have had quite a number people come to our Elizabeth Twp. His. Soc. for research when I was not there to oversee the library rooms. It has happened that more than one person has come in at a time to do work & it can get a little hectic for anyone trying to assist them. I have even been called at home to assist over the telephone. There have also been times when the people doing research have a limited time to do their work & find that they need to move on to another place, like a cemetery, per what they have discovered, the same day. As a result, they hurriedly pick up their belongings & leave. It is always possible that when this happens to pick up a research book, that is not very large, or papers from a file, by mistake. Realistically speaking, we all know that some people will pick something up that they know is wrong, and also to hurriedly replace books in a location with little regard to caring about whether we can find them easily again. Bearing all this in mind, we found out a while ago, that about a ½ inch soft cover volume of early marriage & death abstracts was missing from our holdings. We have hunted & hunted for it without success, so now the possibility that must be faced it that one of the other options my well have occurred during this time period (And We Certainly Hope We Are Wrong). It is a volume that we use pretty much every time a visitor comes in to our building. Without it many people would be very disappointed & out of luck to find an ancestor. However, in this particular case, I have my own copy of this book, from purchasing it years ago, & am going to have to take it in to be photocopied because it does not seem to be available for purchase any longer. This will destroy the binding of my book, but is going to have to be done. Think about how sad it would be if I didn’t have the copy for this to be done. Therefore, I am asking those of you who may go to a location to do research in the future, to remember my story, and if you ever find that you, accidentally, discover you have included something like this in your research materials to kindly mail whatever it is back to the location. I’m sure that the place would even be happy to reimburse you for the postage in that case. Fortunately, we have only ever found a couple of things missing & once in a while something has been filed incorrectly. That is why, we also ask that people not return the materials they have used to the shelves without direct instructions form a volunteer, if help is needed in this respect. I am also suggesting to those who are volunteers to make sure you have someone sit with those who are working on materials to oversee their activities. You may, or may not, have heard some of the horror stories I have heard about libraries & historical societies having books taken, pages torn out. We can’t leave out the courthouse retention centers either. I have known of tax books being taken & this has caused workers, who need to be doing other duties, to have to sit and watch over the people who are working in them. Why some people think that they are the only ones who would ever be interested in an item is beyond me. Thank you for your indulgence & I hope one & all have a Very Merry Christmas. 1. [PAWASHIN] Deep Oil Well Apr. 18, 1913 McDonald PA Record
    2. Victoria Hospodar Valentine
    3. Deepest Well in the World Drilling at the well being sunk by the Peoples Natural Gas Company on the GEARY farm, about three miles northwest of McDonald, has reached the great depth of 6200 feet. The are now drilling in a clear white sand from which they are bailing water that passes steam when it is poured into the tank, having a temperature of 150 degrees in the tank. Before reaching this sand some exceedingly hard drilling was encountered through flint-like rock so hard that it cut glass as easily as a diamond. The Peoples Company had endured several vicissitudes in driving this well. A cavity was encountered which required about eight tons of cement to fill. Then the outfit of cable drilling tools was lost in the well for four months. The 6 5/8 inch casing is of an extraordinary character, upset ends being used with heavy collars, the sections weighing 23 pounds to the foot. There is now over 60 tons of pipe in the hole. National Government officials have been watching the operations all along, especially in the geological and heat phases.
