    3. Jingle Bells... If you thought the holidays are over, you're wrong. You've got another present waiting. I've added http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~florian/index.html to the growing Washington County websites. The "history" area will hold the newsy items known as: *Glances *Personal Notes *Social Notes *Local (and other similar newspaper columns). These entries tell who was doing what, who saw whom, and folks visiting each other. Also included sometimes were births, marriages, and deaths-- or, the poor man's notices. (NOTE: Some of these are also on "genealogy" area -- it's too big of a job to move all of them right now.) There's some old Etiquette-Advice columns. As always, I have a few chores I must do on the pages. Site search should pick up entries now though. If you spot a broken whatever, let me know ( washington.co.pa.webmaster "at" gmail.com). Happy Holidays! 1. [PAWASHIN] Several People asked --- Re: T'was the night before Christmas....a Genealogy Tale
    2. Judy Florian
    3. Several people asked for permission to share my poem. I'd be honored-- and thank you for the compliments. If you share this, please include the statement at the end. NOTE: The version below corrects some minor errors so please use this one rather than the first one sent. T'was the night before Christmas....a Genealogy Tale T'was the night before Christmas, her fingers tapping away Typing piles of genealogy long into the dawn of the day. Where's Ruth, George, Sally, Michael, Bill and Jean? Putting families in order from bits that she gleaned. Who is Marshall Ney Sterling? She never learned for sure And, after years of search, his name carried much allure. Joshua Alpheus's relatives each carried one part of his name One Joshua, one Alpheus - why couldn't they be the same? In the glow of computer light, her eyes worn and dreary If she'd ever find her ancestors, of this she grew weary. She'd whisper their names sometimes late at night As though they'd answer and save her from this plight. But no one answered -- she'd listened quite well you see It was as though all wanted her to just leave them be! "Oh Santa!" she thought, "If I could just figure it out, I'd jump high from my chair, clap, scream and shout!" She closed the file on the crumbling newspaper stack Too many names, dates, and spouses she lacked. She punched the OFF switch - rather too hard -- As she wondered if a misspelled name was just a fraud? She thought of everyone often, before drifting off to sleep Said a prayer to the heavens about secrets ancestors keep. Once in awhile, a face from ago slipped into her dreams Grandma wanted to tell her the family's story, it seemed. But come light of day, the faces and stories all disappeared. She was left with clues she'd never figure out, she feared. This night was different...the faces and features oh so clear As Grandma told story after story--oh my, was she a dear! Awakening on Christmas, she wondered, "Am I insane? "To be chasing my ancestors down every street and lane!" She shook her head silently, vowing to just "Give it up!" And went down the stairs to find the nearest coffee cup. When what to her wonderment, familiar persons circled her tree She couldn't get over how "they all look a little like -- ME!" Her Grandma stepped forward, a Bible in her wrinkled palms "I think you need this, it's got our names near the psalms." The elated researcher was beside herself with glee "All my ancestors heard and came looking for me!" Dropping her head, she quickly searched the Bible's pages... When she looked up, her family had slipped into the ages. The star at the treetop twinkled, reflecting the many lights While tears flowed as she remembered having this sight... "Oh Santa, this was the best gift I've ever gotten, I swear! "To have my sought-for ancestors standing right there!" Standing silent she remembered her promise from before-- And leaping up and down, clapping, she gave a hearty roar!! "Yes! Yes! I just knew I was chosen to trace our roots And the "find" of this bible has me kicking up my boots! Thank you Santa and Thank you God! Thank you Grandma! And... Thank you to all of my big extended family, present and distant past, who all trust me to unravel their lives, secrets, and to tell their stories at last. Merry Christmas--- and may you have a "visitation" in your Christmas dreams! Permission granted to reprint "T'was the night before Christmas....a Genealogy Tale," by Judy Florian as long as this complete statement remains with the poem. Ms. Florian can be reached at: cageycat "at" gmail.com. Show love to someone on a holiday!

The deceased was without relatives in this country. During his illness J. W. JOHNEN and family attended him. He had never married. At the age of 56-twenty-two years ago--he came to McDonald and bought an acre and a quarter of clearing. Removing the stumps he cultivated the land and made it a garden spot. He conducted experiments in horticulture and by grafting rose twigs on thorn bushes got wonderful bouquets of roses. He had no superior in raising fruits and his vines bore great crops of luscious grapes. A man of intelligence and a great reader he was singular in that he never affiliated himself with either church or lodge. For some years he worked in the coal mines, but of late devoted all his time to the beautifying of his home place. Mr. BOBIN had been a soldier in France and participated in two wars. His native place was in the department of Burgeon, France, where he had a sister-in-law--his sole correspondent in the old country. He was buried from the J. W. JOHNEN home on Wednesday afternoon, and laid in Hilldale, also known as Robb's cemetery, in the spot he had chosen for his final resting place. Miss Anna M. CAMPBELL died at her home near Hickory, Wednesday night, June 18, at 11:45 o'clock. Her death followed an illness of three days of acute indigestion. Miss CAMPBELL was born on the farm where she died. She was a daughter of Napoleon Bonaparte and Margaret SIMPSON CAMPBELL and was born May 28, 1845. The father died 25 years ago and the mother 60 years ago. Miss CAMPBELL had continued to live at the old homestead with a brother, James S. CAMPBELL, and a sister, Miss Sadie CAMPBELL. Another sister also survives, Mrs. R. P. MANSON, who lives near Hickory. Miss CAMPBELL was a consistent member of the Mt. Prospect Presbyterian Church, of which she had been a member sine 1861, and took an active part in all of the departments of the church. Funeral services were held from the CAMPBELL home Saturday at 1:30 o'clock, conducted by the Rev. J. E. MILLER of Reynoldsville, a former pastor at Mt. Prospect, assisted by the Rev. Charles STUNKARD of the United Presbyterian Church of Hickory. Miss Jane BOA, aged 29, died at her home in East Lincoln avenue at 8 o'clock Friday morning, June 20, 1913. Mrs. BOA was born at Laurel Hill. The parents, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew BOA, and five sisters and one brother survive as follows: Mayme of Brooklyn, Nellie of Perry, N. Y., Agnes, Elizabeth, James and Ida at home. Funeral services were held at the home Sunday afternoon in charge of the Rev. J. P. JORDAN. Interment in Robinson's Run cemetery. Henry BERTHOLD, a well known farmer of Allegheny County, residing about four miles north of Oakdale, and well-known along the Panhandle, died Friday night, June 20, at the home of Henry KRESS as a result of injuries he sustained a week prior. The accident that finally resulted in his death was an unusual one. Mr. BERTHOLD and Mr. KRESS had driven in a wagon to Oakdale, Sunday evening, to get some milk cans. They had secured the cans and were on their way home and near the home of Mr. KRESS. They were jogging along slowly when one of the milk cans bounced up and was about to roll off the front of the wagon and under the horses' feet. Mr. BERTHOLD made a grab for the can, and lost his balance. He fell under the horses' feet and before Mr. KRESS could stop the team, was fearfully trampled. He received a bad cut on his head and bruises about his body. His ribs were torn loose from the back bone, and he suffered fearfully. His condition remained serious all the past week. He was removed to the KRESS home, where his death occurred. Mr. BERTHOLD was aged 48 years and leaves a wife and eight children. A beautiful Nurse, that took care of my husband when he had a stroke day before Thanksgiving.............but it was a mild ITA, Praises to the LORD. She & husband are from Poland and have only been here a few years, and I love her beautiful Polish accent. She was indebted to the hospital contract with her training and she was unable to be at her Mother's side when she died 6 months ago. Now she is full of saddnes and remorse that she was not there on her Mother's last journey. She says she can barely cope with Christmas and the holidays, and asks her mother to forgive her for what she did. Very sad ! But she said she & family will adhere to the Polish tradition to dress the Christmas tree and with Polish music of the holy night on Christmas Eve.. She said fondly she can still smell Christmas time in Poland, and she had started her baking with tears in her heart. Her husband has no information on his Grandfather: WLADYSLAW WOJTANIA Birthday: 1876 He left Poland in 1913 & came to New York. His wife was to follow the following year, but she decided that she didn't want to leave Poland. They heard from him for a few years and then all trace of him vanished? ? ? Please forgive any mistakes. Who is Marshall Ney Marshall? She never learned for sure And, after years of search, his name carried much allure. Joshua Alpheus's relatives each carried one part of his name One Joshua, one Alpheus - why couldn't they be the same? In the glow of computer light, her eyes worn and dreary If she'd ever find her ancestors, of this she grew weary. She'd whisper their names sometimes at late at night As though they'd answer and save her from this plight.
