Thanks for this information. It connects the dots for me. In Perry County, Ohio living next to Samuel Law was a Robert Law who I have always believed to be his father. Your Robert going to Ohio is a link. Also, my Great Grandfather, Andrew Jackson Law, had a brother James who wrote in an 1880 census that his father (Samuel)spoke "Scottish" so I figured the family had come from Scotland not long before Samuel was born in Washington County. It all fits. You have also shed light on a family legend. My grandpa, Lloyd Law, always said the family had some Pennsylvania Dutch in the line. You said that Thomas lived in Lancaster County for a while. Isn't that Pennsylvania Dutch territory? Robert could have married a Pennsylvania Dutch girl there which gave rise to the family legend. Just speculating. Thank you so much for this information. The origins of the Law family has been a mystery for a long time. Just as a point of interest for you, When Samuel and Robert moved to Perry County, Ohio around 1835 they had a small boy who was there who worked as a farm hand for them. The boy lived on a neighboring farm. That boy was Philip Sheridan, who became the famous Civil War General. Thank you again, Steve Crawford Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Hutcheson Family History, Being an account of the Origin and Generations of the Family" by Giles Virgil and Rosella M. Hutchison, (The Enterprise Press, Burgettstown, Pennsylvania, 1969), we have the following: "The first ancestor, of whom we have any record, in America, was Thomas Law. He was a taxpayer in Lancaster County in the 1770's and up to 1781. Then in 1783, he became a taxpayer in Hopewell Township, Washington County, Pa. His will shows that he raised three boys and four girls. He gave each boy a farm near Mt. Hope church and various items to the girls,...." We have no record of the wife of Thomas Law, but we do know of the location of his land claim in Hopewell Township. The children of Thomas Law are shown as follows: John Law is recorded in Hopewell Township, but we have no further information on him. James Law is recorded in Hopewell Township, but we also have no further information on him. Robert Law is recorded in Hopewell Township, and we have no further information on him as well. Agnes Law married Thomas Whitehill. They were members of the Dogwood Grove Church. Catherine Law married _ Ferguson. Elizabeth Law married first to Samuel Scott. She married second to James S. Hutcheson (they are my ancestors). Elizabeth Law Scott Hutcheson died in 1847. Margaret Law married William McClelland (also my ancestors). It is understood that Thomas Law emigrated from Scotland as a married man with his family sometime in the 1760s. John, James and Robert Law were probably born in the 1750s in Scotland. I think John and James both continued in Washington County. Thomas Law died around 1800 and was buried in the Mt. Hope Cemetery near West Middletown, but I have not yet found his grave. There are however several graves of children and infant children of a Thomas Law there. This Thomas was probably a grandson. As for Robert, it is thought that he had moved west to Ohio. As far as any other Law families in Washington County at that time, I can find no other records. Steve Hunter Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The Rev. Dr. C. W. WYCOFF, who has occupied the pulpit of the First Presbyterian Church of McDonald a number of times in recent years, preached his farewell sermon last Sabbath morning at the Bethel Presbyterian Church near Clifton. Dr. WYCOFF had been pastor of the church for the past forty years, having assumed the pastorate in October, 1873. At a congregational meeting held three weeks ago he was elected pastor emeritus. He will erect a house within a short distance of the church he has served so long and faithfully, where he will spend his declining years.

Cyrus FERGUSON, the well-known successful oil operator, has purchased the club house of the Harkaway Hunt in West Lincoln avenue, which was his former home here. The Harkaway Hunt has disbanded. The house, which changed hands for $9,000, is a fine large residence, and cost a good deal more to build fifteen years ago. Charles R. BUCHHEIT built, and later sold it to Cyrus FERGUSON. About ten years ago Mr. FERGUSON moved to Hollidays Cove, W. Va. The Harkaway Hunt first rented and later bought this house, which was admirably adapted for their purpose. Mr. FERGUSON's rise is familiar to nearly all readers of the Record. He was reared near Eldersville and came to McDonald as a butcher. He succeeded in getting one of the first liquor licenses of McDonald and subsequently made much money in oil speculation. About ten years ago he, with others, took up about a thousand acres of land on the Ohio river, which afterward proved to be very rich in oil. He is one of the wealthiest men, if not the wealthiest, of the West Virginia Panhandle.
