March 22, 1926 Monday Charleroi Mail page 1 TWO GIRLS ARE BROUGHT BACK TO MONESSEN After traveling thousands of miles from Czecho-Slovakia, Margaret age 18 and Elizabeth age 15, daughters of the late Michael and Anna FERICK, who lived at Monessen years ago, arrived in Monessen to make their home with relatives. The two girls were born in monessen. Soon after the birth of Elizabeth Mrs. FERICK died, and the father decided to take his daughters to his native land. Their three older sisters and two older brothers remained in Monessen. Recently FERICK died, and their brothers and sisters sent for them to return to the United States. The young women are residing with their sister, Mrs. John HALTKA. Ruth Sprowls - not related
While doing some digging for another Sprowls, I located an obit for Eva WILLIAMS SPROWLS. (she was born 1893 and died Feb. 1987), was daughter of Stephen WILLIAMS and Sarah A. ROBISON. Well, another mystery unfolded, as I have also been searching for a Sarah A. Robison. *** In searching for articles in the newspaper archives for this WILLIAMS family, I found an article in 1908 stating that stated Stephen Williams, a miner of Monongahela, was killed by a fall of slate on June 9, 1908.*** In going to the 1900 census for Washington Co.,PA, there was a Stephen Williams who lived in Monongahela and was a coal miner, born 1846 VA. and wife was Polly. So this Stephen Williams married to Polly was killed in 1908. ***** I am searching for others who are researching the family of Stephen Williams, who was married to Sarah A. Robison. This daughter Eva was married to Bert Ashur Sprowls - (I know from my research that Bert was son of Samuel Ashur Sprowls and Eliza Slusher. Samuel Ashur Sprowls was son of Jane Sprowls, and father unknown. I "believe" he was illig. and from death cert. was born Aug. 1840 and d. 1906 in the Wash. County home.) I believe this Jane Sprowls to be daughter of Edward Sprowls and Sarah Brown, and would have been a sister to my husbands gr gr grandfather Obadiah Sprowls. According to obit for Eva WILLIAMS SPROWLS, and verified with census data, she had two brothers Leslie Williams and Clay Williams. A sister Ava died in infancy. She had a nephew Raymond L. Williams of Bentleyville, three nieces Mrs. Harry (Mildred) MCCRACKEN of Charleroi, Mrs. Madeline EDMINSON (she was dau. of Elmer Sprowls), and Mrs. Bethel LUTZ. I would like to verify that mother of Eva (Sarah A. Robison) was the Sarah I am searching for. She was born about 1853 in Wash. Co. The mother of MY Sarah were: Elmira (Margaret?) Sprowls, dau. of Edward Sprowls and Sarah Brown. Again, another sister to Obadiah. And father was Philip/Phillip ROBISON who d. about 1857/1858. I believe his first wife Margaret d. 1838, and he had 2 sons William and Philip with this 1st marriage. Sarah A. ROBISON also had a brother H. Clark Robison. Mother and brother are buried in Beallsville Cem. Any Williams or Robison researchers that can help? Thanks, Ruth Sprowls

Francis is allegedly the son of Sarah Braddock of same county. He was born ca. 1800 in said county and moved with Thomas & Sarah in the mid-to-late 1810s to OH then IN. Francis married (1) Polly "Mary" Hougham, alleged daughter of Jonathan and Nancy Davis Hougham, in Fayette County, IN February 14, 1822. They became the parents of 11 known children; Jonathan, Thomas, Nancy, Amziah Morgan, William Francis, Sarah, Aaron Hougham, Eliza C, Francis A, Mary E, and David. Mary died in 1850 and in Dec. 1850 Francis married (2) Cynthia Ann COLE. They added 3 more children to the family, Daniel J, Eli and Hannah M. In 1878 Cynthia is listed as the landowner in the 1878 Prarie Twp, Edgar, IL tax list leading me to believe Thomas had died. In 1880 she is a widow. Census information for Francis is as follows: 1810 - Washington, PA 1820 - Warren, OH 1830 - Rush, IN 1840 - Hancock, IN 1850 - Parke, IN 1860 - Parke, IN 1870 - Edgar, IL My unanswered questions for Francis are: Date of birth? Date of death? Place of burial? Did he have a will? (if so I'd like to obtain a copy) Am I missing any children?? If you have any information or resources I can use, please let me know. Dying in 1957 he would most likely be buried in the newer Cemetery. I have relatives buried there that died between 1910 and 1972. Newer is a relative term in this case I guess. Barbara, the cemetery by the church dates back to the 1700s-1800s, but as I said, the stones are hard to read. To check on names on those stones, you would have to go to Citizens' Library and research the records for the Three Ridges Presbyterian Church. At least that way, you could see if your ancestors attended there. The little cemetery by the old school also has very old graves, but the last time I was there, many of the stones were readable. I forget when the "newer" cemetery was incorporated, however. If you do not live in Washington County, perhaps you could call the library and request a search or go to their online site, http://www.citlib.org Another source you might try is at the Law Library in the Washington County courthouse. I am referring to "Miscellaneous Cemeteries, Washington County, PA," coordinator Irene P. Lignian, C.G. This publication comes in several volumes. You might contact Pat Stavovy, assistant law librarian, and she could help you. She can be reached at 724-228-6747. If you would ask her, she would look your names up for you, as she is very nice. Cindy
Yes, there are three cemeteries in West Alexander. The one beside the old Presbyterian church (formerly Three Ridges Presbyterian church), is very old, with many of the headstones quite worn, thus making the inscriptions unreadable. You would have to check the church records for that one at Citizens' Library in Washington, PA, or have someone do that for you. The two others are as were stated, with one being beside the old school on Main Street; however, a gentleman told me that some of its old gravestones were pitched into a small "ravine" directly behind the cemetery. The "new" cemetery, on Route 40, is right at the end of the street, down from the old school on Main Street. I think that the street that takes you to the Route 40 one is Liberty Avenue (?) or Liberty Street (?). Cindy
Are there any records of patients seen from early 19th century Washington Co. doctors especially Dr. LeMoyne? Barbara
How far back do the West Alexander cemeteries go? Is there a cemetery book or church records and, if so, how far back? My West Alexander area people died there between about 1818 and 1832. If I'm not mistaken there are actually 3 cemeteries in West Alexander. The main and newest Cemetery is on route 40. The second is on the "main" drag through town just East of the Presbyterian? Church which is older. The third if memory serves is located just South of the old West Alexander School (I suspect this may have been a family plot at one time.) Hope that helps. Anyone know if the "Scotch" newspaper exists anywhere? The Cameron Rangers This new team is the old McDonald Rangers reorganized with Chas. CAMERON Manager, Frank HALEY Captain, and Wm. CALDWELL Secretary. This team must not be confused with the McDonald Rovers, the Association Football Champions of Pennsylvania, with whom they have no connection; although three of the Cameron Rangers, Jas. DAVIDSON, Wm. CALDWELL and Robert HULME, helped the McDonald Rovers win the silver cup they now hold. The Rangers are considered the younger and lighter team, but their record, as will be seen below, is not inferior to that of the noted Rovers. The record is as follows: *This portion of the article is ripped off and the remainder continues in the next column. The photo is also ripped in half. By permission of "Scotch," the excellent Scotch newspaper of Pittsburg, we reproduce the above picture of the team ready for business; and also the following accounts of the players pictured above: Peter FORTUNE, goalkeeper, is 23 years old, 5 ft. 8 in height, 150 in weight. In 16 games he has only been scored against five times. James DAVIDSON, left full back, is probably the best man on the team-a hard, gritty player. He is 21 years old, 5 ft. 8 in height, 150 in weight. Harry CLARK, the other full back, is a fearless capable player, rapid and accurate, and a hard man to charge. He is 27 years old, 5 ft. 8 in height, 135 in weight. Adam COCHRAN, left halfback, is the youngest and heaviest member of the team and can cover every point perfectly. He is 18 years old, 5 ft. 9 in height and 170 in weight. Dick WILSON can be depended on always to play a good game he is 21, 5 ft 7 high, 140 lbs. Arch BAILEY, the third halfback, is 20 years old, 5 ft. 7, 140 lbs. His play is also reliable. R.SMITH is 22 years old, stands 5 ft. 9, and weighs 160. His shooting for goal is wonderfully accurate. T. HULME is 21 years old, 5 ft. 7 and weighs . T. SMITH . weighs 155.

James MCATEE is a citizen of Latrobe who visited old friends about McDonald during the Fair. He is 58 years old, a native of Ligonier Valley, and he has a history worth retailing. (sic) At present he is night watchman at the Latrobe Coal Works at $54 a month, and he has been in that position for 13 years, residing there all the time somewhat monotonously, but varying his life by attending each year all the soldier reunions he can find. He says Dr. W. A. JAMISON lives in the finest house in Latrobe, and that his father, Armstrong JAMISON, is the leading banker of the town and one of the most respected and genial and magnificent old-time gentlemen in all that country. (The adjectives are MCATEE's). James MCATEE, when ten years old, his parents being dead, was sent by Dr. John HASTINGS (then preaching about Turtle Creek) to grow up in his wife's family-the family of Hon. John MCDONALD, West End, McDonald. Here MCATEE had his home till he was 21 years old, and then being six feet and four inches high and weighing only 100 pounds, he enlisted in the 63rd P. V. Soon he came to weigh 160 pounds. He was shot in the head at the Wilderness, shot in the leg at Cold Harbor, shot in the side at Petersburg, shot in the groin at Bull Run, but he went all through and reenlisted, and many a time handled his musket till it was too hot to hold. The war closed, he enlisted in the 17th Regulars, and all told he served eight years in the army. He now gets a pension of $8 a month.
