    1. [PAWASHIN] Information about ROBERT WALLACE
    2. Suzie England
    3. I am trying to find out the name of my g-g-grandfather's 2nd wife's name. ROBERT WALLACE was 1st married to MARY GRANT who was kidnapped and killed in 1782. He married a 2nd wife a number of years later.and lived in Hanover Twp. I have seen info that her name was JANE McCOY but in ROBERT WALLACE's will he refers to his wife as MARY (?). I have a picture of both Robert, his 2nd wife and their children and I would love to know her full name. I know ROBERT WALLACE died in 1808 but do not know where he or his 2nd wife were buried. His son, also named ROBERT WALLACE, and other family members are buried at the Covenanter (Miller's Run) cementery. I also read that a MRS. CULLEY of Hanover Twp. was a descendant of ROBERT WALLACE. If there are still any descendants of this family, I would love to contact them and share information. Thanks to anyone who might give me some answers to these questions.

I am checking into the possibility that the will of William Huston in 1802 is not the William who was the first to settle in Washington, PA. According to Allen Eckert's narrative history, "That Dark and Bloody River", William Huston was killed by a party of Wyandots, led by a half-breed named Sam Grey. William, the first white man to settle in what is now Washington, PA, died while working in his garden. His brother had just stopped by to tell him to get to the fort for safety, not fifteen minutes before, but he had refused to leave. He was buried on the spot where he fell, which was in his own yard. Six other settlers were also killed that same day in that area. I have misplaced my information, but I think the year was 1781. I will find out for sure and post it. I have just received the reference book that Eckert got his information from and will pass on what I find. My point in pursuing this is that if the will of William Huston in 1802 is for the wrong William, then so are the children listed for him. It is a long shot, but just about everything in genealogy falls into that category. It may help explain why so many of us have hit a brick wall in our Washington, PA Houston/Huston line. 2. HISTORY OF GREENE CO., PA. WILLIAM HOUSTON, deceased, who was a farmer and stock-grower by occupation, was born in Ireland in 1791. When twelve years of age came to America and settled in Washington County, Penn., where he learned the shoemaker's trade and followed it as a business until he came to Greene County in 1836, and bought the farm in Aleppo Township which still is in the possession of the family. Here he died in 1854. In 1820 Mr. Houston married Esther, daughter of Captain James Dickey, of Washington County, Penn. Their family consisted of seven children, three of whom are living. They are W.D. HOUSTON, a carpenter and contractor; SAMUEL, a carpenter and farmer; and JOSEPH. The last two mentioned were soldiers of the late war, in Company H, Fifteenth Pennsylvania Volunteer Cavalry. The family are highly respected in the community in which they live. 3. I have a brother in that area and I do believe that he and his family attend vacation bible school there on year at that church and he said something about it being kept boarded up so kids don't vadalize it, but not sure who you contact about it and how often it is used. Burgettstown Library should have information on it and I did know of Beverly Rankin working at the library and she has been in the Burgettstown are as long as I can remember and she could probably direct you to the answers better than I. I wish I could remember all the names, places around there as I grew up mostly in the Eldersville / Avella / Burgettstown area [except for a few years we lived in Marland hts. weirton when I was young]. I replied to the other inquiry as to shades of death road and I hope I sent it to the correct list. If I can be of further help just let me know. Tina [Glover] Allman Cynthia McWreath <bartleby7492@verizon.net> wrote: I am somewhat familiar with Shades of Death Road, as I taught at Burgettstown High School and would ask my students how the road got its name; however, I never received a definitive answer. Rumor says that a young man hung himself years ago there, but the veracity of that still is yet to be seen. I have been to the cemetery which surrounds the Bethel Ridge Methodist Protestant Church, and I approached the church, but was disappointed to see that it was no longer being used, and this was in 2005. I believe that there are two other dates connected to this church, which, if I remember correctly, must have been posted somewhere on the outside of the church because my notes say say "Bethel MP Church, AD 1832, 1874, 1910." The middle and latter date may indicate re-dedications. Patterson's Mill Cemetery is a moody cemetery, for lack of a better term, in that it seems to be hidden and has many trees surrounding it. If I am not mistaken, it seems to be divided into a Protestant section and a Catholic section. I have some ancestors buried there (Pattersons) but have yet to make a complete study of them. I know that there are children's graves there, all grouped together, and they make me think that perhaps these children died during the flu epidemic in 1918, but I am not positive. 3. During my teen years at Burgettstown HighSchool in the 70's we lived on the road: Cole School Road which connected to Shades of Death. Some of the older families we knew out that way said that there had been a hanging way back as well as miners trapped and not recovered; therefore the name and hauntings. There use to be a lady by the name Katherine Slasor ? something, she was in charge of the history of Eldersville. My son told me that years ago there use to be Eldersville tours of Shades of Death down to Kidds Mill area and lots of discussion more detailed on those old roads. I am not sure if the Kidds still live in Eldersville but they use to be involved in the Boy Scouts in Burgettstown. Perhaps the Burgettstown Library holds more info. I wish I could be of further help but moved from that area, many , many, many years ago. 3. In looking at the 1910 census for our Waltons, I found Elizabeth, widow of Henry Walton, living at TEN MILE VILLAGE. Does anybody know anything about this village? Some of our Walton ancestors are buried at North Ten Mile Baptist Church. Would the area on Lone Pine Road, near this church, be considered the "village"? Thanks, Jeannette

    3. I am somewhat familiar with Shades of Death Road, as I taught at Burgettstown High School and would ask my students how the road got its name; however, I never received a definitive answer.
