    1. Re: [PAWASHIN] Deportation Records
    2. Pamela J. Nixon
    3. Dear Listers: I need some advice on what research information is available on deportations in the early 1900's from Washington County, PA i.e.where that information might be found, what a deportaton record might contain, etc. I suspect my grandfather, MATTHEW MACK, may have been deported from Arden, Washington County back to Glamorgan, Wales in December 1910, possibly due to incorrect information on his 1904 Port of Black Rock manifest-immigration form when he crossed the border from Canada into the United States. In May 1910, Matthew appears on the U.S. Census in Arden boarding with my great-great grandparents, ARCHIBALD AND LUCY MCINTYRE. The family story is that Matthew mysteriously disappeared in December 1910. He did not come home after his shift at the mine one day and no one knew what happened to him. Then in February 1911, Matthew's sister, JOHANNA DOWNEY of Carnegie, PA received a letter from her brother, JOHN MACK who was still living in Wales, that yes, Matthew was back. Matthew was seen in a neighboring town by John's son, Daniel. John Mack was quite miffed that his brother, Matthew, had been there back in Wales that long but had not come to visit him. John did not give any reason as to why Matthew might be back in Wales. My grandmother, FLORENCE (MCINTYRE) MACK always said that Matthew had returned to Wales because of a problem with his "papers" but never explained anything further. In March 1911, my grandfather, Matthew returns to the United States through the Port of New York on the R.M.S. Mauretania out of Liverpool, England. When Matthew finally filed his naturalization papers, he used the Mauretania immigration information on his application. Any help or suggestions as to where I might search for deportation information on my grandfather, Matthew Mack would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Pam Nixon Westland, PA pnixon15378@yahoo.com --------------------------------- Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! Mobile. Try it now.

    2. Carol S. Arnold
    3. Were James, John and William born in Pennsylvania? Who was their father? Could their father be the John Houston who emigrated to Pennsylvania in 1720-25? According to E. Rankin Huston's History, that John Houston came from Ireland and settled in Gap, Lancaster County. He died in 1760. Is he the same John Houston who lived in Washington, Pennsylvania? I'd appreciate any help on this. I've been trying to track down Thomas Houston, a son of John Houston of Lancaster County. That John Houston also had sons named James, John and William. -----Original Message----- From: houston-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:houston-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of LJSLumpy@aol.com Sent: Wednesday, February 20, 2008 8:52 PM To: HOUSTON@rootsweb.com; HUSTON@rootsweb.com; pawashin@rootsweb.com Subject: [HOUSTON] HUSTON / HOUSTON More HUSTON / HOUSTON information.... 3. Hello all, Is there anyone out there who reliably descends from Wiliam of Catfish Camp? Please contact me directly if you do. In my research, I am pretty confident that my line does not descend from him, but was around in Washington County at an early age. I'm interested in possibly co-sponsoring DNA testing to determine how related our lines are. I am checking into the possibility that the will of William Huston in 1802 is not the William who was the first to settle in Washington, PA. According to Allen Eckert's narrative history, "That Dark and Bloody River", William Huston was killed by a party of Wyandots, led by a half-breed named Sam Grey. William, the first white man to settle in what is now Washington, PA, died while working in his garden. His brother had just stopped by to tell him to get to the fort for safety, not fifteen minutes before, but he had refused to leave. He was buried on the spot where he fell, which was in his own yard. Six other settlers were also killed that same day in that area. I have misplaced my information, but I think the year was 1781. I will find out for sure and post it. I have just received the reference book that Eckert got his information from and will pass on what I find. My point in pursuing this is that if the will of William Huston in 1802 is for the wrong William, then so are the children listed for him. It is a long shot, but just about everything in genealogy falls into that category. It may help explain why so many of us have hit a brick wall in our Washington, PA Houston/Huston line.
