On the anniversary of D Day, here are photos taken at that time. I think we should remember the sacrifice these young people made for us. This link was sent to me by Tom Dix who was on the last ship to be sunk during WWII. The photos take a while to load, but they are worth it. http://blogs.denverpost.com/captured/2009/06/05/the-65th-anniversary-of-d-da y-on-the-normandy-beaches/ Dawne
Hi Faithful Listers, I have a couple specific requests about my Norris Family from Washington County. A few of us, who are related, and one who has not found a relationship to us, at this point in time, are working actively on this line in order to accomplish 2 objectives. The first to find a Direct Male Descendant of John Norris, who died in 1782 in North Strabane Twp. who would be willing to take a DNA test to compare with some others who have done the same, to work out a mistake in a published book on the family name & to sort out which is which, back to their proper origin. So far, it appears that more than one genetic line is listed as only one in the volume, and this may very well be in error. At present, we have looked in to 2 of the 4 sons of Charles Norris, son of John. Charles sons John & William have no living male direct descendants, only females. We are currently following the descendants of the son Charles Jr., son of Charles Sr. Specifically, the ones who moved to New Castle, PA - Good material has been gleaned so far, but it occurs to me that it's possible that someone reading this may know more about Charles, who married Jane ______. The second aim is to take the line back from John of 1782 & find out just who his wife Susannah ______, and his son's wife maiden names were. We have a few clues we are working on at this time in regard to the wives, and we are hoping a DNA possibility will assist in accomplishing the task of establishing John's direct line. If anyone on here has any input to give on these points, I would appreciate a reply to me personally. Ellen J. Ballas (ETHS-VP) at ( [email protected] )

Hi Juanita, I purchased my copy several years ago from Closson Press in Apollo PA. I just did a quick search on their website and don't see it listed any longer but it might be worth contacting them to see if they have a copy or have plans of reprinting it anytime soon. In the meantime, if you need something looked up, let me know. I'll be happy to check my copy for you. Debbie

I think I may have found Ann's tombstone. In the old section of Beallsville Elmira Freeman is marked as stone # 74. Right next to her is # 73 and the only things that are still legible are the first name and middle initial - Anne S. and her age - 22 y 8 m 4 d . I have Ann's birthdate as Feb 6, 1836 and her death as Oct 10, 1858 which would match the age on the tombstone exactly. I think this may very well be your Ann Freeman. Deb
Hi Pamela, I checked my files now that I'm home and found a death date for Ann Freeman - Oct 10, 1858. The source of this information is supporting documents # 6610168. The last time I was in Washington DC, I went to the DAR library and looked at the database of scanned images for their membership applications. Unfortunately, you have to be at the library in Washington to view the supporting documents. I can't find the copies that I made or any other notations on this particular set of documents because we have moved a few times since then and lots of my genealogy papers are still in boxes. I'm pretty sure this was an application for a descendant of Joseph Hill Sr. (1748 - 1828) who was the father of Rebecca Hill Freeman. I wish I could be more specific about all the details and if I happen on the copies I made or the notes I took, I'll pass them on but for now at least you have a death date for Ann. It is possible that Ann was buried in the old section of the Beallsville Cemetery. There are three Freeman children buried there and I think they are all children of William and Rebecca. The tombstones are hard to read but there is Elmira daughter of W--- Freeman, Mary Ellen daughter of --& R. Hill, and Infant Daughter of __ & R. Freeman. Ann could be there as well but her tombstone could be missing or could be one of the ones that you can't read anymore. Debbie
Hi Pamela, I am at work so I don't have access to all of my files on the Hill family but I was able to get to a copy of William Freeman's will. It only lists 6 children and from the sound of the way it is stated, Ann may have died before her father made his will in 1870. I'll check my files when I get home and see if I can find anything else. I have information about Rebecca Hill's family. They were all buried in the Hill Cemetery in Scenery Hill and it is possible that Ann may have been buried there as well and there is no stone. I can't find any records of the burials in that cemetery - all that is left are the stones that I photographed and transcribed. That may be why she isn't in the Beallsville plot. Will from Washington County Pa courthouse: Last will and testament of William Freeman - In the name of God Amen. I William Freeman of the Township of East Bethlehem in the County of Washington and State of Pennsylvania being of sound mind and memory and considering the uncertainty of this frail and transitory life do therefore make, ordain and publish and declare this to be my last will and testament. That is to say. First after all my lawful debts are paid & discharged the residue of my Estate real and personal, I give, bequeath & dispose of as follows to wit: To my beloved wife Rebecca, I will & bequeath the entire use and exclusive control of the farm upon which I now reside during her natural life, and I also give and bequeath to her my entire stock of household and kitchen furniture, and the balance of my personal property I direct to be appraised and sold at public sale and the proceeds to be divided equally among my six children, namely, Ira, John, William, Samantha, Lewis and Elizabeth Freeman. At the death of my wife in case she survives my I direct that my real estate be appraised and sold and the proceeds thereof to be divided into six shares which I direct to be disposed of as follows. To my son Ira, I give and bequeath two of said shares - to my son John one share - to my son William one half of a share - to my daughter Samantha one half of a share - to my son Lewis one share, and to my daughter Elizabeth one share. Likewise I make constitute and appoint my son Ira Freeman to be sole executor of this my last will and testament, hereby revoking all former wills by me made. In witness whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name and affixed my seal the sixth day of August in the year of our Lord one thousand eight huncred and seventy (1870) Wm. Freeman I'm guessing you've probably already found the information about this family in the Crumrine book but just in case you have not seen it --- Notes for JOSEPH HILL, SR.: >From History of Washington County, Pennsylvania West Bethlehem Twp (pp969-978) by Crumrine. Early Settlements: One of the earliest settlers in the territory of this township was Joseph Hill, an Irishman, who, having emigrated to America, settled first in Maryland, and in 1774 came into Washington County and settled on Plum Run, in West Bethlehem township, where he took up a large body of land. Joseph Hill was twice married, first to Miss Ackley, and the second time to Margaret Joy. These two marriages resulted in a family of thirteen children, who married and settled in life as follows: Joseph Hill, Jr., married Mary Jameson; James Hill married Ann Hill; Thomas married Rachel Speers; John's wife was Nancy Sergeant; Margaret became the wife of James Beatty; Elizabeth became Mrs. John Welsh; Sarah was Mrs. John Sargeant; Benjamin's wife wad Delilah Notestine; William's wife was Narcissa Beatty; Atkinson Hill married a Miss Reemer, of Ohio; Rebecca became Mrs. William Freeman; Eleanor married William Hawkins, and now lives in Kansas; and Henry, who remained single, removed to Ohio. From this family, especially the son of James, the Hill descendants have become very numerous, although they are widely scattered. Dr. Hill, of Burgettstown, and a host of others in other parts of Western Pennsylvania are members of this Hill family. The property of James Hill consisted of a tract of one hundred and ninety-seven acres of land, which has become the property of Joseph Hill, Esq. By intermarriage they are connected with the old German family named Weaver, who were all people of prominence. Adam G. Weaver is a representative of this branch of the Hill family. Hope some of this helps. Debbie Day PS. I'm glad the Beallsville website helped you find William !

One other possibility is that she is living/working in another unrelated family's home, but not enumerated as "Ann" (maybe by first & middle initials?) Or, was there an older relative who might have needed live-in help? Was she "away" at school? If you narrow down the church denomination she attended, I'd check church records for a marriage--if any exist. Hello all, Can you assist me with finding marriage information for: Ann Freeman, born about 1836 d/o William and Rebecca Hill Freeman. She is about 14 as enumerated on the 2 Aug 1850 US Federal Census. My hunch is she married prior to 1860 Census, as her siblings surrounding her in age, are still at home. I don't think she died, as she probably would be buried with her father and sister in Beallsville Cemetery. (A huge break through in finding William was Debbie Hill Day's website, I am very grateful). I have no other information on Ann. Thank you. Pamela Carter [email protected] 2 grt granddaughter of William and Rebecca Freeman
I did locate Vincent COLVIN's will as well as his family history. Still, would like to know of any possibility of locating marriage record of Elizabeth COLVIN to William POWEL(L)? They were married by 1812 when Vincent's will was written and probate begun so am _guessing_ the marriage took place in Washington County. TIA Donny J.
