My grandmother, Eleanor (Courtney) Grace, married a Milton Earl Smith of Washington Co after 1910 . I believe he was deceased very soon afterward as I think I saw her in a Pittsburgh city directory of 1930 alone. I found his WWI military registration - done about 1918 - where he is living in "Arden". Anyone help me find out more about this husband? He was said to have been the "love of her life". She was widowed all the time I knew her in the 1940s. Thank you Barbara Sacramento CA

Hi all, Just wanted to let my friends know that I will not be able to help out anyone over the summer. I won't be sending any articles/obits or jumping in to help out. I have 3 reunions to prepare for,,, 2 of them I organize. PLUS my durn friend at the local historical society got me involved in a "little" Civil War project. She was very misguided - it is NOT a little project. For our county there is no complete listing of ALL county Veterans of the Civil War. There is a history book of 2 counties, which my county is one of them. I have to research the names and pull our county veterans from the rosters !! And on our county website there is a list of all regiments that our county vets served in. So I have a lot of good leads and I know where all the data that I need is located, plus websites I can utilize. THANK GOODNESS the Mormans have added the new website that gives us free death certificates for Ohio (www.labs.familysearch.org) and marriages and census. This has been a blessing. The goal is to have a complete listing of all the county vets from the CW online at the societies website, and will also include a data base and mini bios for as many as possible. Again, Ruth has stepped in it up to her......... I will be in the background reading postings, and will send a heh to friends . But won't be able to help out anyone at least til mid-August. So save your questions til then, and I will be glad to assist. hugs, Ruth Sprowls
These same cemeteries are also going up on the Washington Co PAGenWeb site. I'm almost done with them. Still have 4 to complete. Lou, There are microfilm containting naturalization applications in the Law Library in the basement of the Washington Co. Court House. Some are quite hard to read (dark) but worth the effort and time. Ruth

According to some maps that I have on the development of the counties of Pennsylvania here is a rough idea of when the counties were formed. The happenings took place between the dates. 1718 -Bucks and Philadelphia Jan 1, 1730 - Lancaster has been created out of part of Chester and unsettled lands north and west. Jan 1, 1770 - Cumberland county covered what is now Westmoreland. What is now Washington and what is now Washington and Fayette were probably still part of Virginia Jan 1, 1780 - Westmoreland has been cut off of Cumberland and includes what is now Washington and Fayette Jan 1, 1790 - Washington and Fayette have been cut off of Westmoreland. Allegheny has been created covers the area from Washington county to Lake Erie and I believe the area west of the Allegheny River Jan 1, 1800 - Greene has been cut off of Washington Jan 1, 1810 - Allegheny has been cut up into Allegheny, Beaver, Butler, Mercer, Crawford, Erie; parts of Venango, Armstrong, and Warren west of the Allegheny River. Jan 1, 1820 - the county formations occured in the eastern part of the state. Anyone wishing a copy of the maps (7 pages) contact me direct. The maps show developement of the counties state wide. All the cemeteries of Washington County, Maryland have been read and are available in Western Maryland Room of the Washington County Library in Hagerstown. Note that the Library in Hagerstown is too be closed in the not to distant future for remodeling and enlargment. The holdings will be disbursed and/or put in storage until the new library is opened. They have an excellant genealogy room with hundreds of family histories, church records, etc. The open hours vary by the day; the library proper is open all day, every day and contains some genealogy reference materials. History of Salem Township Salem Township’s history starts with the battle of Bushy Run on August 5, 1763. There Colonel Henry Bouquet led the 42nd regiment (the Black Watch Regiment) recruited from the American Colonies against a contingent of indian warriors led by the famed indian chief, Pontiac. The battle began at 1:00 pm and raged on for two days. With casualties on both sides, the indians retreated. This was the last major stand for the indians who eventually moved further west. Bouquet moved on to secure Fort Pitt and thus opened the western part of Pennsylvania to colonial settlements. A colony of Americans heading west decided to settle in the area near Bushy Run and the “Salem settlement” was established in 1765. Today the township encompasses 47.8 square miles with a population of around 7,000. The township has a consolidated public education system known as the Greensburg-Salem School District. The main road through the township is Route 22 which connects its citizens with a direct route into Pittsburgh. It’s a farming community with a suburban atmosphere and over 250 businesses flourishing in various parts of the township. With Pittsburgh 40 minutes away the residents have access to the metropolitan atmosphere, health care and professional sports of a major city. ____________________________________ From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Sent: 6/8/2010 3:15:57 P.M. Ellen, Thank you so much for sending this information !! I can't wait to get home and compare the list with the information that I took from the stones 42 years later. There are indeed some stones that are not legible any longer so this list may help fill in some of the blanks. Thanks again for taking the time to type this all out and send it. Hi, I can't find what I want on the Internet because I have not driven down this way in a few years and I forget the name of the businesses I need now. If you are on Rt. 519 at Eighty Four traveling SOUTH toward Glyde, you'd end up going under the bridge for the Interstate, then past the truck stop and a trucking company. If you keep going and coming closer to Glyde, you would see Business A on the left.... then Business B on the left. These 2 are both on Google Earth and are the 2 main businesses nearest to Glyde. OR... if you start at Rt 40 EAST from Washington and turn LEFT at the flashing light onto Rt. 519 NORTH, you'd quickly pass Business B on the right side. A little further down, also on the right, is Business B. I believe that Business B has a large-diameter pipe-type gate barrier at its driveway right along 519 -- it had been painted a bright orange when I was down there. Business A had no type of gate blocking its parking lot/entrance. I don't recall what the businesses were-- some kind of "man's" industry-- like pipes, or welding, or drilling, or fabrication (steel?), or maybe heavy machinery? I need the business names for both. I am most interested in the business B that is shown on Google Earth being along the addresses of :: 216 PA Rt. 519, 214 PA 519, 212 PA 519, 208 PA 519, 204 PA 519. Business A is most likely Ritter Industries, Inc. at 46 PA 519. Am I right? It is shown on Google Earth as being along the addresses between 46PA 519 to 28 PA 519. It's a short distance from the intersection of 519/Rt 40. So what is the name of Business B that is between the addresses of 216 PA Rt. 519 and 208 PA Rt. 519 on Google Earth. Judy
