I was looking through a book called "Washington Co. PA Early Marriage Index" at the New Castle PA Library. Someone had pulled out the first 5 pages so Iam not sure what these letters mean. My ancestor's name is John Ross and his wife Mary Elizabeth (we do not know her maiden name) of Green Co.PA They were married about 1776 not much later. So when I found this in this book I am very interested, a good hint if they were married around 1776. Groom: John W Ross Bride: Mary Craig OC-H pg.102, OC may mean Orphans Court I went on line and that was indicated. If you can help I will truly appreciate you! Maybe not he states he was born in Washington county, but now I don't know whether it's washington Township in one of the other counties and there sure is a lot of those. So i'm staying in Westmoreland and Armstrong counties now but checking census's etc I only have one last James Fuller on the 1830 Census to check, he was living in Ligonier in 1830, Henry Fuller must have been in Westmoreland at some stage as that's where his wife was born/raised so I'll just have to keep asking the questions and see what comes up. I've made enquires with the WPGS would it be any idea to make enquires with GSSWPA as well. I suppose it wouldn't hurt. Mind you I'm doing this from Australia so it's not too easy. Thanks so much for your reply trust me any help is appreciated just a! bout to pull my hair out. Dianna Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. On occasion I peak into people's queries, and I hope that you don't mind a little help. Washington County was formed from the much larger Westmoreland County in 1810. So you may want to try that first. Prior to that it changed names a few times, but was owned by Virginia. It was formed from the much larger Bedford County. You can check a timeline to the history of Washington County on the site: http://www.genealogicalsocietyswpa.com/Washington-County-History.html(Just copy and paste to your address bar). you might also want to check out the Mayflower Society's silver books. They give the first five generations and may list your Fuller ancestors. I hope this helps. Katrina Wilk, VP GSSWPA Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. Hoping someone who lives in Washington County and/or is familiar with the land as it was in the early 1800's may offer a suggestion as to a possible burial site or cemetery. I have copied a brief section from the will of William Keys, a resident of Pikes Run 1805-1815-16. The family immigrated to Washington Co. from No. Ireland in 1805 and were members of Episcopal Church. William and his wife Christine Graham Keys both lived on the land described below. Wm. died in 1815 or 16. I assume Christine died there too. I have not been able to locate where they are buried. Is it possible with these land descriptions that someone might guess of an early cemetery they may be buried? Thank you Barb in Oregon ~~~~ The Will of William Keys “I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife Christina during her natural life the land I now live on being the same I purchased from Reasin Bealle. I bequeath to my son Wm. Keys a lot of ground with it’s improvements to being the same that I purchased from Joseph Leonard known by the name of Lanyard place. In addition a lot of land to be struck of the tract of land bequeathed to my said wife and part of the tract I purchased of Washington Heaton, bounded as follows: Beginning at the gate now stands north of the house Daniel Bayliss occupies, from hence along the meanders of the _ _ _ to a line of fence known as by the name of the place of Washing of Sheep, thence north, of said line of fence a strait direction until it strikes the line of Wilson’s land thence to follow the line until it strikes the Pittsburgh Road. “ Witnessed by Zeph Bealle George Guttery , William Guttery Signed by Before me Isaac Kerr, Register for Probate, 31 August 1815 _________________________________________________________________ The New Busy is not the old busy. 3. I'm new to the list and not sure what's available. I can look up the Wash Co site and see they offer "officially" but wondered if there are kind souls who actually hit the court house now and then and can take a peek at records for others. I have several Wash Co. connections but am especially interested in my grandmother - Eleanor Courtney Grace who married Milton Earl Smith and they were living in "Arden" in about 1918 according to his military registration form. Anyone help? Thanx Barbara in Sacramento CA

    3. I've been asked about how to do title searches. I have 2 sections of help files on one of my sites: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~florian/genealogy101/ http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~florian/faqs/ It looks like I did 2 files about Title Searches. Not sure why I did 2... it's been a while since I wrote them. One of the pages has a list of tips. One page describes the process of doing a title search. I still need to put up instructions about how to draw a tract of land using deed info. Maybe this summer. Oh, and you can use the box on my sites to search for anything. The on-site Google search box seems to work the best. 3. It was probably on the Swearingen farm / homestead. Look for a deed that sells this property, whole or in part. The deed should say there's a cemetery on the land. If Thomas SWEARINGEN who died April 12, 1803 had family, the land probably continued in the family. It could take years before the land gets split up. A title search would show how the land transferred hands. See my web sites for how to do a title search. When families started a farm cemetery, no records exist. See if there is an Obit-- might say buried on his farm. As more burials occurred, again, no records. Even churches kept no or few early records. There was no fee to be buried on one's own land; no fee to "open" a grave--family dug it; no fee to the land owner; no cemetery regulations. A doctor's bill for "last illness" might be in the estate Account. A "undertaker" or family member made the coffin-- if the estate had an Account, the bill will be in there. "Viewing" was at home, if any done. So I'd look for an Estate Settlement//Account and search Deeds up through the years. Eventually, the land may have been set aside as a "cemetery" in the Deed record. 1. [PAWASHIN] Update: Washington Co. PAGenWeb cemeteries
    2. J.A. Florian
    3. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~pawashin/cemetery/index.html I have been re-doing this Cemetery Index over the last year. Gina Nestor gave me her very long and very complete "Cemetery Database" to use online, including the format she used to list the information for each cemetery. It gives name, address, location, background info, where to find more information, etc. I've tried to add information to the database when I or a submitter knows or discovers additional details. Gary L. Caldwell added GPS coordinates to the cemeteries he typed up. I've tried to make sure "all cemetery names" are given if a cemetery changed names or was/is known by multiple names. I've used Gina's Database to make an online "card" for each cemetery; the "card" lists the database info. Then, on separate web pages, I post the burial list. The entire database has been online for a while, as one long file. You could probably find it quick by using the search term "database", "Gina Nestor", or by the cemetery name. If the name you use does not come up, it may be known as a different name. We had many cemeteries online before from when Christina Hunt was webmaster. "Nacs" from this list added photos last year of cemeteries around Charleroi, PA. Gary L. Caldwell submitted Census info for many cemeteries that were "read" by the DAR around 1937-1938. Many of these cemeteries were in poor condition at that time for many now un-used cemeteries. Gary's additions so far have added almost 2,000 names to the online cemetery database. (I need to add up totals for all the ones online.) Here are the newest additions: 374 names for BRUSH RUN (PETERS CREEK UNITED PRESBYTERIAN) CEMETERY 261 names for Center United Presbyterian Cemetery 150 names for Chartiers Cross Roads Presbyterian Cemetery 304 names for Raccoon Presbyterian Church Cemetery (Candor) 248 names for WEST FINLEY CEMETERY BURNSVILLE, PA 424 names for The Upper Buffalo Presbyterian Church Cemetery 127 names for Tucker Methodist Episcopal (Stone) Cemetery (Tucker United Methodist Church) 355 Venice United Presbyterian Cemetery now Venice Presbyterian Church USA 11 (plus missing) names for Wayside Cemetery (Dager Cemetery) Glyde, North Bethlehem Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania NOTE: "Totals" will never be accurate for any of cemeteries. Many old cemeteries had unmarked graves, now forgotten. Many cemeteries never kept records of burials. If the cemetery was in-use, more burials may have occurred after a "reading" was completed. Therefore, the "totals" only represent the numbers found at the time of a reading. Anyone can submit info about names "missed" during a reading, or submit corrections. I still have several more cemeteries to do. I'm also still working on other submissions.
