Hi Carole, There was a Daisytown, Washington. It is just down the road (Rt 40) from Beallsville as you are heading away from Washington toward Brownsville. Debbie

Thanks Judy and everyone for the response. I understand it's Daisytown and not Daisy. Carole Clarke --- On Sun, 7/18/10, J.A. Florian <[email protected]> wrote: From: J.A. Oh, I forgot the Heaton Slaves said to be buried near the Heaton family graves in Morgan Twp, Greene CO,, PA Bill ----- Original Message ----- From: "DARWIN LOLA WEBER" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, July 15, 2010 12:55 PM Subject: [PAWASHIN] Death of salves/free blacks in Washington County > If a slave or free black died in Wshington County in the late 1700's or > early 1800's - what kind of record would there be? > > Was there a burial ground in the area that is primarily for the > slaves/blacks that early. > > Appreciate your help. > **** > Please visit http://www.chartiers.com/pages-new/pawashin.html for list > information, particularly the bottom of the page. > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message
Very interesting question. Prior to the late 1700's, Greene County was part of Washington County and there were slaves in both counties. Greene County: In Gilmore Twp. there is Negro Run Cemetery (actual name is the "N" word). Available records say one White man and 30 Negroes buried there. No names listed but the White man could be a Kennedy. In Jefferson Twp. my Daniel Ferrell, slave of Thomas Hughes, Esq. is reported to be buried in the same cemetery as Thomas Hughes and his wife Elizabeth. Actually, "slaves" are said to be buried there. Of course since slaves is plural and two makes at plural, it could be just Daniel and Jane the Black woman buried there. Or, there could be more slaves as indicated in a newspaper photo taken some years ago. Green Mount Cemetery, Waynesburg: the Colored Section. There rests well over 250 Blacks many of them former slaves. Many of them my families. Cumberland Twp, near Carmichaels, PA: The Colored Graveyard...no additional information other than the location. But there were many slaves in Cumberland Twp. Perry Township, Greene Co, near Mt. Morris: Shannon Run Colored Cemetery. My Caleb Davison is buried there but there are no records saying who else might be there. Please note this cemetery is also called the McLaughlin Cemetery, with a McLaughlin woman buried there in 1844...she has a Grave Stone with her name. My Caleb does not appear to have a stone other than a field stone and was buried there in 1899. Caleb and family came into Greene COunty after 1852 when freed in Marion County, VA (WV). There is another Colored Cemetery in Perry Towship but no names listed. Porter-Lantz Cemetery in Wayne Twp. has a "Colored People" section and early Black residents are buried there. Including my George Bice, who died and is buried as a 'white' man (Greene County Records). Valley Chapel Cemetery in Jackson Twp: Several Blacks. Former slaves? There are more but none as large as the ones listed. All the above are documented and copies of records available at Cornerstone Gen. Society in Waynesburg...a very good place for research. Most likely there wouldn't be a record for a Slave unless the owner kept a business record showing his assets or entered the death in the family bible, which sometimes occurred. Burial of a Slave would be on the home place, most likely marked with a field stone or unmarked. Free Persons of Color in that time frame would have generated the same kinds of records as free whites. A record could be found in the wills and estates or Orphan's Court records if the deceased left any minor children or unsettled property and in the deeds if they owned land. If they owned land they were most likely buried on it. Depending on their status in the community there may be a death notice or short obituary in the newspapers. I would also be interested in learning about any Black burial grounds in Washington County. Check the Pittsburgh online papers. It was just on Fox News. Judy
Each cemetery had its own group, whether called an "association" or not. In numerous cases, "the association" of a particular ceme died when the last family or relatives died. I don't know if there's a big association-- I've never heard of one and none of the church cemeteries I've researched ever mentioned it. Cemes are pretty much on their own in the county. The Washington Cemetery is the oldest "downtown and largest" cemetery within city limits except maybe for IC's at the other end of the city limits. The few others in the "city" are small or no longer used (example: what was behind JFK). Miles is not a very common name in the Romberger family. We have only one who was born about 1860 in Centre County, Pennsylvania. In reviewing the census records, I do not see the family as described in your post. Pershaps you have some additional information that would help us locate him. You can review the Romberger Family Association database at http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=rbaverell or contact me directly using the address connected with this family tree. I would love to connect him to the Romberger Family Association database. Bob Averell Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
