Does anyone know the address of the Polish National Catholic Church on Goat Hill? It was called that long ago. The church has a cemetery with all my relatives buried there. In Washington PA. Thank You, Virginia Tomon [email protected]

It stood for pounds/shilling/pence - and the pound was the Pennsylvania (not the British) pound. For more info, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pennsylvania_pound

Just a guess but it might be pound, shillings, pence. I have wills from that time period and they still state the bequests that way. It wasn't until 1786 that the dollar was officially adopted. It probably should have been MANSION house meaning the home in which he resided. In a will of John L Cooke, 1869, Washington PA is mentioned the "manstone" house. What might that mean? Thanks for any help.
!INFOR: Washington County PA, Clerk of Courts listing In 2010 they couldn't locate the record for this entry (stored off site) for the following item: Swearingen, Thomas -- Riot -- No. 7 April 1797 (speculation is that this could have been a 23 year old Thomas Swearingen who was in Washington County at that time) The Whiskey Rebellion as 1791-1794. What would the term "riot" as a charge have meant in 1797? Thanks for any help.

I believe Joseph Lawrence or possibly John Lawrence may have built our house and Joseph Lawrence Jr. (member of House of Representatives) could possibly have been born here as documents from 1786 place a Joseph Lawrence as owner of the tract of land upon which our house sits. Right now we're trying to determine if this is the right Joseph Lawrence as we live in Menallen Twp, Adams County, not far from Hunterstown in a house that has a cornerstone date of 1760 and have traced the house history so far to 1786 with Joseph Lawrence as the owner at that time, but do not know if John Lawrence could have been an earlier squatter on the property. As of now, I have found that John Lawrence was in York (now Adams) County as early as 1750 as an overseer of the poor. From what I can tell, Joseph Lawrence Sr. took over this position around 1785 (per York County records) but then they relocated (back?) to Washington County, Pennsylvania by the census of 1790. If anyone happens to know anything about the 1745-1790 time frame regarding this family, please contact me at [email protected] Thanks! Here is a bit more about the Crooked Billet as an ancestor of mine is said to have kept a tavern with that name at this location. This is what I have in my notes which will give some idea of the area where the battle was, I guess. Burnis Argo "John McFarren settled at a place known as "The Crooked Billet" where he kept a public house or tavern so named because a crooked billet or stick of wood was placed above the door as a sign to indicate that it was a place of entertainment. The location of this "Crooked Billet" was supposed, by his great-grandson James McFarren, from whom the information comes, to have been on the west side of the Schuylkill River and not far from where the Centennial Exposition of 1876 was held. "William McFarren Farrar, editor of The McFarren Memorial wrote in the appendix: "I am fully satisfied this place was in Bucks County, PA. Davis' History of Bucks Co, PA located a Crooked Billet in that county. Mr. J. Warren S. Dey, New York, was of the same opinion . I sent him a copy of the 'Memorial.' In acknowledging its receipt he says the 'Crooked Billet' was a settlement in Bucks County, where one of the battles of the Revolution was fought and this makes me believe that it was your grandfather (William McFarren) and none other referred to as an 'Ensign.' This belief on his part was afterwards verified by the records."
Clare in looking on Google I found a place called CROOKED BILLET which was a battle in the Philadelphia campaign of the Revolutionary War. It occured on May 1, 1778. This may be what you are looking for just type in Crooked Billet on Google. Shirley Clare Pebworth wrote: > I am trying to locate Crooked Bullet. I am trying to locate Crooked Bullet. John Neal was killed at Crooked Bullet on May 1, 1778. John fought as a Sgt in John Buchanan's Co. of Militia but I don't know from which state. John's wife was Susanna. In 1785 Susanna and her children moved to Shirtee Settlement (now Chartiers Valley) and lived at Gambles Mill, Allegheny Co., Pa. I don't know where they came from. In 1792 Susanna and children moved to Smith Twp., Washington Co., Pa. and bought a farm known as the Wilson Tract. Does anyone know what state John Buchanan's Co. of Militia was in? Does anyone know where Crooked Bullet is located? Thanks for any direction. Clare in Fla.
